70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

He was a bit of a nutter but was a top top player on his day and also scorer of one of the best goals scored against United.

Barthez was so good, you wanted Seb Frey over him!

Barthez was meant to replace Schmeichel. In fairness, he did pretty well, but I don't think I'm alone in having felt the Great Dane was being replaced with Grouchy Smurf. We assessed him every weekend relative to a legendary unbeatable beast of a goalie and formed our opinion accordingly. I saw the legend ship 6 the first time I watched United live, yet I was in awe of him anyway and just shrugged it as "every keeper has a bad day at the office". Barthez never got that from us.

I'm sure anywhere but in the UK people would rate him up there with the very best. Any Frenchman would likely be shocked I would even consider picking Frey ahead of him.

But the man has baggage, and that baggage is with the very same people who actually vote in this bloody thing! So I was opting for the safe hyped-up Football Manager legend that most wouldn't have a particularly strong opinion on. It was purely tactical.

Your centre backs let you down, significantly.

Montero was a beast, I have no intention of ever dropping him. Brown could do with an upgrade alright.

You do have to consider though that I'm going for CBs who can play fullback on either side as at times I will opt for puching my fullbacks way up and keep three at the back with Ramelow dropping into defence. I passed on some better CBs than Brown on that basis, he can adapt to both tactics, while others can't do it proficiently.

So far. The more I think about my 12th pick, the more I think he could make it into that starting 11 though...

I have particularly have one 12th man in mind who could also actually first choice.

Frey was a legend on CM0304 - I always used to flog Barthez as soon as I could.

I have two players who I unfortunately cant pick now who be perfect at the top of a diamond in midfield for Brians team. At least I don't think they've been picked....yet. Have had them down as players who'd go a miss though considering how deep the AM/Playmaker/10 was in that era.

I have a couple in mind as well.

That's exactly the kind of thinking I was picking for. I did the same!

But you look at the real world and it's a bit insane really to prefer a goalie who wouldn't take the Inter bench (i.e. challenge of getting the first team spot) and preferred to be the big fish in the pond of midtable team goalkeepers.

I quite grudgingly pick this guy, as there is someone else I prefer but this one is better suited to Trezeguet I feel due to his blistering pace...

Marcelo Salas

Next pick is another one I grudgingly choose.

At right back, Cosmin Contra. Numerous caps for Romania, good striker of the ball and set piece specialist, and spells at Athletico Madrid, Alaves, AC Milan and more recently Getafe

Cal? has another 3 hours to pick, then on to Gio

You can't be having a go at me for picking Dida and then you pick Barthez.

So far I don't see a reason for criticism for having picked Dida. Friedel at his peak was not better than him. He's been competing for nothing his whole career. Barthez I have awful memories of. Given is similar to Friedel career vice. Would have had Friedel over him but picking Given of the keepers that are left makes sense but the 5-10 goalkeepers that are better than Dida at their peek I have not yet seen.

I'm sorry but you lot are crazy if it matters one bit who's in goal of those keepers mentioned so far :)

It's nigh on impossible to pick a keeper who hasn't made some mistakes at some point. Both Barthez and Dida at their 'peaks' were considered world class and rightly so

The only difference the keeper makes is if you've got VDS, Buffon, Toldo or Peruzzi in goal. Toldo did have a poor finish to his career but he was a great keeper in his peek. I don't know if I'm overrating Peruzzi with my memory but I do have seen less of him than anyone else picked so far.

Anyone picking a keeper this late (me included) can only really get someone who was considered quality at his peak

Rood takes:

Stephen Carr

Cheers Cling - Im going for the Irish vote :D

In fact Barthez was also my first choice and in hindsight i should have gone for him first as Im sure Carr would still have been there for next pick.

Anyway I reckon the top PL players are being underrated in this draft, a lot of average Serie A players have been picked - both Carr and Given were twice picked in PL Team Of The Year

It is swings and roundabouts really

I would say if you think that then there are certainly alot of average players from the PL era being picked up personally.

Mellberg, Brown, Lauren, Kewell, Hyypia, Edu, Heinze, Carr...

Don't think any of those are world beaters or club legends to be honest.

You can't be having a go at me for picking Dida and then you pick Barthez.

 I knew you wouldn't be impressed but you will have noticed I was trying to avoid the negative views some may have of Barthez. Which is the same I was picking on yesterday: that Dida's non-peak form could have a bearing on people's assessment of him.

Of course Dida at his peak was top class, but Cudicini or Friedel would have been safer options vote-wise. Never reached the same peak but were consistently reliable over a longer period. The question is whether you pick someone who will vote well (or not negatively) or just the better player.

Any keeper that has won the World Cup AND the Champions League must be pretty damn good. Sure, they play alongside great defenders, etc. but there is a reason why those great national sides and clubs choose to have them and not someone else.

As I explained earlier, I had picked Frey ahead of Barthez despite knowing full well Barthez was the better keeper by some distance. Midtable keepers look good for the most part: usually save their team, get to pull off several saves in a game as they are not that well protected... by the time they make a mistake people just forget it. Top keepers at top clubs and national sides don't get to shine as brightly, as their teams are usually on top of things, so, when a time finally comes when their intervention is necessary, being unsuccessful puts you under the spotlight massively. You are expected to do bugger all for 85 minutes yet be brilliant in the other 5, which usually come along with the defence screwing up and leaving you badly exposed. It's a much much harder job.

Mellberg, Brown, Lauren, Kewell, Hyypia, Edu, Heinze, Carr...

Don't think any of those are world beaters or club legends to be honest.

Kewell, Hyypia and Heinze were far from average in their prime. They aren't average in the same way Emile Heskey is average. Hyypia was Liverpool's best defender for years. Heinze was arguably our best player in 04/05 and then bought by Real Madrid. He's won the PL, La Liga and Ligue 1. Kewell was a PL hotshot for a while. He's a solid choice for a left winger in the draft. Not many world class besides my own pick and Nedved.

I personally think Carr is a fine pick. People might think Birmingham when they think of him instead of his Tottenham spell. Solid choice IMO.

Brown at his peek was at right back in 07/08 season. That was just one season though and not at his prime position. But since he's a United player it's easier to determine how good he is. Good enough to play for Manchester United and England at least.

I don't think many players that have been picked are average. Players not considered to be picked are the ones that are average. There is the odd one out however but nothing major.

I don't think many players that have been picked are average. Players not considered to be picked are the ones that are average. There is the odd one out however but nothing major.

This.

Obviously as we get towards the latter stages there is less glitz and glamour but the players being picked are still pretty solid players.

By the end we will have 192 players, right now we are already over 160. It was always going to be the case that the top 30 are far more impressive than pick 150, but we are still talking about a whole decade of people being born all around the world... and we are picking a top couple of hundred. It's quite an impressive feat and I wouldn't knock any of this guys in terms of their achievement. Average are the other millions who never even made it as a footballer.

The fact that we pick 11s makes some obvious Top 100 players not be even picked yet. The leagues people on here have most exposure to also skew the results, and some people will miss out purely due to the relative obscurity of the leagues they play in (I had a GK choice as good or better than many on here, it just wouldn't fly though).

But for the most part, the better players are coming through, quite clearly.

Bugger - I though nobody had noticed him

Unlikely. I tried to test quickly what people's views of Frey were today so searched it on the caf. There are a zillion TF threads about him, Coupet and (AN Other French one). Do bear in mind we've spent a fair part of the decade worrying about GKs either side of VDS.

It was bizarre to see how much people wanted to sign these guys despite them being uncapped or NT subs to the keeper we desperately needed to get rid of :smirk:

No one (myself included) seemed to get the irony of it all. Everyone thought he was the future in 2003, many also in 2010, few had bad things to say (thus my original pick).

Funny one: some post lost in there says something along the lines of "nah, we are more likely to get that guy from Auxerre"... A couple started on about him, no one followed, no one cared, no one had ever heard of him, "value option" type treatment, he probably wasn't good on FM...

Peter Cech

I pick a three time Champions League winner, 2003/04 Champions League top scorer, UEFA forward of the year 2004, 27 goals in 47 appearances for Spain and 204 career goals.

Fernando Morientes

3304397morientes.jpg

Finally. I'd perhaps taken him as my 12th man had no one else picked him. He makes a very good 2nd striker.
