70s Retro Football Fantasy Championship - DRAFT THREAD

Looks great when Guardiola pings the ball around those front 4 but, TBH, I think he would have a hard time getting hold of the ball to begin with.

Maybe, although I rate Dino Baggio as a good ball-winner in central midfield, and Schneider was a grafter who could tuck inside as well as stay out wide.

Owen has never been a solo striker tbf

He's never been great with his back to goal I agree, but I think he'd be in his element with Guardiola and Rivaldo sliding passes through to him.

I am just paying Brwned backed the favour for his criticism of my choosing of Hasselbaink.

In fairness, the most damning criticism was yours. We gave the outsiders view that Drogba looks more effective as a lone-frontman. You said that's because Chelsea lacked width, that with proper width that would be fine.

You don't have width.

I supported the idea of Drogba-JFH initially, you challenged it (indirectly)! I don't think it's clear-cut who was the better of the two though, JFH was definitely being considered but Larsson had that bit more proven versatility from his time at Barca.

They're both half-wing backs really. More Cafu than Roberto Carlos for me.

Dino Baggio was never particularly special

Larsson is a good pick but I can still think of a couple of better forwards left in the pot

I don't have width... yet, plus I said it was the way Chelsea's midfield was organised not due to a lack of width per se, but with so much focus on Lampard now, before that Poyet and before that Di Matteo as opposed to the strikers.

Agree with your first point. As for Larsson, i agree with Gio. He was as good if not better than the strikers who remain.

Baggio is a decent balanced DM with a tendency to being positive (going forward). He is no Gattuso though.

Either you have one of those or you need two CMs/DMs with Guardiola behind them. Schneider is probably the best RW he could get at this stage so maybe it is a central midfielder (with some defensive capability) that he is needing.

Don't be afraid to share. Otherwise it's just bragging.

He is right, there are some really good ones. At least five strikers and 2-3 forwards. I do think Larsson was the best forward left though.

(by forward I mean players that get more involved in creating, by striker I mean the ones who just put the cherry on top and get all the glory)

The fact that we saw Larsson as a viable option at the age of 36 or whatever it was and that he did it at the very top level tells you all you need to know about him. There is one other world class forward though who I'm surprised hasn't gone

No one is saying Larsson was rubbish, I was considering him as a partner for Trezeguet, but I am not losing sleep over his pick as I can think of a couple of front men who were as lethal, if not more so, in their prime.

There is more than that, some brilliant ones.

Integral part of the Arsenal's invincibles. At one point the best RB in the league.

It hurts me greatly to do this, but Ralak's next pick is Champions League winning former Bayern and Juventus winger Hasan Salihamidzic.

feck Guily was my next pick.

Its getting so tough now.

Veyr few good players left.

rofl I thought I broke my elite champions in someway by getting Kewell....but forgot he started and got a medal in 2005, legendary performance it was.

I need someone who has over 100 assists in 9 years for one club.

But he also needs to have won two Champions League's, scored and been named man of the match in a final.

Four times in the PFA team of the season, in the Euro '96 team of the tournament, his only problem? I assume not picked because he played for Liverpool.

Steve McManaman

Good pick. Versatile as well. Where are you planning on playing him?

I went for Camoranesi after DE had suggested Macmanaman - had considered him an option for the right wing, but didn't quite see the same team balance with him in there

FFS yesterday I had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice for my next pick

1st McManaman
2nd Giuly
3rd Kewell

Salihamiszic was also on my wingers list

Baggio is a decent balanced DM with a tendency to being positive (going forward). He is no Gattuso though.

Either you have one of those or you need two CMs/DMs with Guardiola behind them. Schneider is probably the best RW he could get at this stage so maybe it is a central midfielder (with some defensive capability) that he is needing.

He is no Gattuso but thats why he was a 7th round pick rather than 2nd! Think he was as good as some midfielders that came far earlier in the draft as well

I dont think I need another defensive mid since I already have Guardiola and Baggio plus Schneider was always willing to do some hard work to add to his creativity - it is another attacking player I am looking for.

I understand, my point was there are only 3-4 defensive midfielders who could really pull off doing the work of two in midfield (which is why they went in the earlier rounds).

With Baggio you have a capable DM but will need Guardiola to put a good shift as well, when that was not the most remarkable part of his game.

Your team though, your call.
