It would have been South America's turn to host the tournament in 2034 and Infantino came up with this "centenary" loophole to allow Saudi Arabia to be eligible to host it then instead, as technically South America will have hosted in 2030.

This. This was all Infantino's way so Saudi Arabia could get in there quicker with their bid. Throw a bone at the Uruguayan's and Argentinian's and let Spain keep the core of the cup.

Exactly. It’s going to be uglier than the evil queen from Snow White. Climate change is already unassailable and showing and 2030 will be really bad. Obligatory also feck FIFA and their fecking stupid choice of tournaments. Why couldn’t they have just given the centenary tournament to Uruguay. Uruguay was planning to host the centenary tournament in 1996, before I was even motherfecking born.

The original plan was too ambitious and expensive and a never ending chain of mismanagement, ownership changes and lack of funds to pull it off have made it impossible to pull off. Even now it's not a sure thing they'll make it happen.
