2030 World Cup awarded to Spain, Portugal and Morocco

Part of the Qatar bid's success was supposed to be based on assurances that the tournament could still take place in the summer, with air conditioned stadiums, etc.

Ship's sailed on winter world cups now. They'll keep happening.
To be fair, summer in most of the world is getting too hot to play football anyway, unless you only hold world cups in northern countries, winter world cups will need required.

The spanish stadiums
Madrid - Santiago Bernabéu
Madrid - Cívitas Metropolitano
Barcelona - Spotify Camp Nou
Barcelona - RCDE Stadium
Sevilla - La Cartuja
Malaga - La Rosaleda
Zaragoza - La Romareda

Obviously no Valencia.

But no Mallorca is a joke....Espanyol's stadium shouldn't be on the list.

Very few stadiums in the south, too. Will Sevilla get at least a QF?

Not yet announced.

But i guess this is a likely scenario.

Quarter-final
Metropolitano
Bilbao or Sevilla
Estadio da Luz
Hassan II Stadium

Semi-final
Bernabeu or Camp Nou
Hassan II Stadium

Final
Bernabeu or Camp Nou

IIRC the first part of this World Cup will be held in South America? Something to do with Uruguay’s 100th anniversary of winning the very first World Cup.

You'd think it might have been an idea to hold the 100 year anniversary World Cup in South America instead of across two continents at opposite sides of the world.

Centenario in Montevideo gets the first match I think as nod to 1930.

I'm also pretty sure I saw that final will be at Bernabeu

North Spain gets 6 venues (Barcelona x2, La Coruña, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Zaragoza)
Center Spain gets 2 (Madrid x2)
South Spain gets 2 (Sevilla, Málaga)
Insular Spain gets 1 (Las Palmas)

Given that Southeast Spain has more than 30% of the population, it looks pretty favorable to the North. I think you could have scrapped San Sebastián, Zaragoza, Barcelona's 2nd venue or both to make room for Valencia and maybe Mallorca.

correct, I think it's a nice nod indeed and I don't see a big issue with this

6 teams (the ones that play in Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Asunción) will travel 10.000 km more than their rivals in the group stage. 3 of them were making that trip anyway (not in the middle of the tournament though), but the other three are at a clear competitive disadvantage.

It's not a 'nod' at anything.

It's a convenient excuse for the stitch up that awarded the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia.

Imagine trying to get out the car park after the match
The stadium should have various public transportation options along with a park and ride bus to create a staggered exit. If its used for a final, half the fans would leave early because their team lost.

Yeah lets give the fans yet another place to fly to. As if this WC isn't already enough of a joke for the matchgoer

Portugal only with the QF?

The Hassan II Stadium will surely get a semi-final with their 115,000 capacity.

And if the final will be at Bernabeu then the other semi-final will be at Camp Nou.

Estadio Da Luz has a good capacity with 64,000 but the stadiums above have so much more capacity for a semi-final.

Portugal would never get a home World Cup without Spain therefore they should be lucky with one quarter-final match in my opinion.

The heat in Sevilla in July 2030 is already killing me, never mind the players. That's going to have to be a very late night game then.

Not that it gets any warmer at night - it’s fecking 32 degrees now in Seville at 11 PM

Is the Porto stadium not being used? I assume not given La Coruna has been selected so relatively short distance between the two.

I know the ever expanding number of teams means it's going to get harder and harder to host in one country, but I did much prefer the idea of Italia 90, France 98, etc.

Spreading the Euro's in 2020 (2021) to so many countries was a rubbish idea for me, and I much preferred it just based in Germany this year. And I don't think a world cup being played in 6 countries, over 3 continents, is good either. It's probably the way its heading, with so many teams involved and so many countries and continents needing to be covered as having had their opportunity to host. But it dilutes the 'special' feel of the tournaments for me when they're spread over so many different hosts.

That's not been decided yet. Morocco are hoping to get it with their planned stadium, but currently it seems more likely it would be the Bernabeu yeah.

Games in Andalucia and Madrid in the summer in 2030 are gonna be a lot of fun...

Let's be honest, it's not that hard to host for one country.

The premier League / la liga / seria a etc have 10 matches on, on the same day sometimes. The new world cup has 4 games per day.

Sure 100,000 plus fans from some countries descending on the event is challenging, but the fan zones aren't normally talked about as being that difficult to sort.

Nothing is easy in life, but some challenges are over stated

Oh, absolutely. If you kept giving it to the same small number of countries who have the infrastructure already in place, then they could definitely host a 48 team one.

I meant, really, with the world cup switching between continents each time, and increasingly looking to take it to different counties more, then it's harder to do that with a 48 team tournament then when they had just just 8, 16, 24 or 32.

It's ever expanding, and looking to take it to ever more new places who all want a go at hosting - but many of those newer places just don't have the infrastructure in place to host the full 48 team tournament. So I'm sure those two reasons combined are why we're seeing so many bids now that are covering more than one country. Sometimes multiple countries. But it just doesn't have the same feel for me when it's being played all over the place compared to when it's just one country hosting it all.

The Euro 2020 (2021) experiment shouldn't be repeated. But this 2030 world cup covering three continents is similar. I get the South American part is just a nod to the centenary so that's a one off. But sharing it between three main hosts, covering two continents, is already overkill again for me. There's clearly just too many countries all wanting a piece of the hosting action and they're looking at ways to include more and more. But as usual when that's the case, too many is just diluting it for me.

Three countries on two continents sounds bad but at the end of the day all the stadiums are within 2-3h flight from each other which makes it similar amount of travelling as during the South Africa World Cup and much less than in Russia.

Valencia with the New Mestalla would be 100% there......but the current Mestalla is pretty crap.

And yeah like i said Mallorca should be on the list instead of Espanyol's stadium.

I thought a city could only have 1 stadium per tournament.

Is La Rosaleda supposed to be remodeled until the WC? Because in its current state it is quite a sorry affair.

In the last world cup there were three stadiums in the Qatari city of Al Rayyan, and two in Doha. All the stadiums used in the tournament were within 55km.

3 countries next to each other is fine and in fact this world cup will be much smaller than the Canada/USA/Mexico behemoth - throwing in random games in South America is the bizarre bit

There was a mental proposal for something ridiculous like Saudi/Greece/Egypt at some point but now Saudi decided to throw enough money at it to go it alone
