2021 Summer Olympics (Tokyo)

Which would still be half a minute on the 10.000m MAX. I'm willing to believe that, but no one shaves a minute of his 5k or 10k PB just by putting on the Dragonfly's, that simply doesn't happen.

They give an advantage to the athletes, that much is certain, but it's minimum. Most report a 0.3-0.5" difference over a 400m race. I wonder if they'll be forbidden in the future just like the Speedo swimming suits were. The WRs set in those look unbeatable right now as well.
Well, like i said, the lady knocked 1 min off her personal best to break the world record, so actually it did in that instance.

Also, haven't read this article but someone has written a lengthy piece on them. DailyMail mind. :o

I'm interested in the criticism of the US media for listing the table in order of collective medals won, rather than by Golds won - especially following on from the huge criticism Piers Morgan (rightly) received when he talked about 'Golds being the be all and end all' and everyone, rightly in my view, disagreeing with him.

Personally, I've always thought the medals table, not just Gold medals table, should be listed by collective medals won first - with amount of Golds used as first separator if nations equal. Or, if Golds are to take on more significance, then at most say they're worth 2 points to Silver and Bronze 1 - that way, teams with slightly less medal tally but more Golds might be ahead. But in a situation where a team have way more medals than another, but say 1 or 2 less Golds, then the team with more medals would be ahead.

For instance, this time around, I don't agree that ROC, with 18 more medals than Australia, and 17 more Silver medals, are behind Australia just because they have just one extra Gold medal. If 1 Gold medal is deemed to equate more than 17 Silver medals, then that starts adding weight to Piers Morgan's earlier comments (which I strongly disagree with). It's like football tables only going off games won rather than points earned, so a team with just 1 extra win being above a team who've picked up 17 extra draws so have actually achieved plenty more points throughout the season / competition.

I was just about to say these skateboards are pretty boring. I'm not seeing what the commentators are seeing to get hyped up about. But Sky Brown, wow! That's the best I've seen in all the events.

Wait, people are mad about that?

 What!?
Nah, not mad. It just seems to be being viewed in a mocking way for 'twisting' the usual table format to put themselves on top for overall medals won, when the 'proper' tables are prioritising Gold medals and putting China top.

I just found it interesting what people on here thought about how the 'Medals Table' should be ordered? Golds only? Overall medals? Overall medals but Golds 'worth more'? Etc.

I thought it’s always been based on total medals :nervous:

I loved seeing Biles teammates in tears watching her complete her beam routine.

Teammates don’t do that when they think you quit on em. feck the haters. Simone is the GOAT

Just googled it and I found...

"The convention used by the IOC is to sort by the number of gold medals the athletes from a country have earned. In the event of a tie in the number of gold medals, the number of silver medals is taken into consideration, and then the number of bronze medals.

The gold first ranking system described above is used by most of the world media, as well as the IOC. While the gold first ranking system has been used occasionally by some American media outlets, newspapers in the United States primarily publish medal tables ordered by the total number of medals won."

So, yeah, in the US they normally do it that way so they haven't just done it this time to put themselves top. And I think that's the right way. But, apparently, most countries, and the IOC, focus almost exclusively on Gold medals.

Explains why I’ve always thought it was done that way then.

And yeah, I agree with you. Silver and Bronze aren’t chopped liver.

Interesting. I actually like the idea of total tally count, as I feel many people are over obsessed with Gold and sees Silver and Bronze as failures. That really shouldn't be the case.

Team GB's hockey title defense is to fall at the penultimate hurdle, 3-0 down to the Netherlands.

hmmm. I heard a theory that perhaps the surface has some extra spring in it after the heavy rain the other day.

Where are you watching ?
NBC’s The Olympic Channel on the NBCSN app. Great coverage of the wrestling tournament. They’ve got John Smith (2x Olympic gold and 4x World gold) and Jordan Burroughs (1x Olympic gold and 4x World gold) commentating, so if you wanna learn wrestling, I highly recommend it!

I've been watching NBC too but it seems like I'm never watching live.

109+ kg weightlifting

Lasha's going to break all 3 world records I think - snatch, c&j and the combined total

Anyone know where one could watch the Italy/Serbia volleyball game starting in about an hour? (Please nothing shady).

Goosebumps when Brown finally landed the kickflip indy and then the 540 afterwards. Chuffed for her (even though it was a very basic run other than that).

Bronze for Clarke in the Heavyweight boxing and silver for Whittaker at light heavyweight. Big moment for Clarke after missing out on the team in 2012 to Joshua and 2016 to Joyce. Whittaker beaten by the Cuban Arlen Lopez, they really are brilliant at this sport. That's the second gold medal victory for them over team GB in as many days!
