2021 American Civil War

Yeah, they clearly have no clue about what it means but I'm baffled by the fear. Fear is a strong feeling and I can't understand how their society managed to create that fear.

most of them probably believe they’re going to fulfill the American dream and when they’re rich would have to pay loads of taxes to subsidise the poors

Fear-mongering has been going on a long time in the USA. Witness McCarthyism in the 1950s with its blacklisting over fears of the "Red Menace": "Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party?"

This is a common narrative I've seen. Appeal to the selfish and egotistical nature of people. "I worked hard for my wealth. Why should I subsidise lazy parasites?"

Never mind the fact that they themselves grew up with the free healthcare and education subsidised by other tax payers and profited from it. Never mind that hardly any of them will ever reach that 40 - 50% taxation mark in their lifetimes.

Yes. My uncle, who is an extremely successful engineer with an absurd IQ, thinks every country in Europe, including the UK, is “socialist”... I talked him down re Ireland somewhat, with his claim that Ireland is a social democracy (intentionally) on the way to a socialist state

He clearly doesn't have an absurd IQ. He's just good at engineering.

I just despair. This isn't going to go away, the mass consumption of conspiracy theories is going to continue to undermine democracies and result in violence and death. As has been said this is radicalisation, and that isn't simply undone and can't be reasoned with.
If at least Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and other large social media platforms starts to remove all blatant conspiracy content, groups, etc. that's at least something. They'd probably have to do something about the algorithms as well. But they're probably at least ten years too late for that to have a meaningful impact at this point. It's the last years of Rome coming up.

I remember the days when you had to actively go look for conspiracy theory content, and it mostly turned up on one of those awkward amateur sites. Like bloody Jim Corr's of all people. (I did a uni course on this stuff back in 2008).

Just look how many comments invoke religion & not just the self help niceties it offers them.

This is the mental deficiency side of religion, the dangerous side. This is evangelical, dominionist. This is being so delusional that these mensas think it’s biblical, it’s ordained by their manmade fairytale, & they are allowed to operate freely in its lunacy & any chaos created in its name is totally fine.
They are the same type of person as the crusaders who knelt and prayed after slaughtering the city of Jerusalem.

1000 years later, and still no change.

It makes sense but it's more a dream about the USA then a reality about Europe or socialism. That shouldn't create fear.

The original video for those who forgot:

This delay also bought the senators a potentially life saving 60 more seconds to escape the incoming mob. He also managed to lead them to a more fortified area. What a fecking hero.

I don't know how he didn't go to the weapon and fire. I'm guessing multiple reasons, amongst them probably that he only had so much ammo for a small pistol. I'm thinking if he had an M-4 things may have gotten ugly. I probably would have fired at some point with something more than a pistol. But maybe he felt the mob was somewhat contained and he could lead them somewhat peacefully away without further incident.

If he pulled out his gun he would probably have had to use it, and if he used it he would have to hope that he would scare the rest away. If they rush him at that point he's dead. And if they aren't out for blood before, they're definitely out for blood after that (and now armed, if they weren't).

What does he think is particularly bad in socialist Europe? Do they believe that we are not free, not happy, maybe poor? Because even if we pretend that his observation is correct, effectively what are the negatives?
Judging from Reddit, conservatives think this about Europe:
  • It will be taken over by Muslims.
  • High taxes of which the revenue isn't spent efficiently by governments
  • Less freedom than in the US
  • Anti-business
  • European countries don't have to spend as much on their military because the US protects them

He is good at other stuff too. but perhaps I should rephrase-when he has taken IQ tests he gets absurdly high scores, how significant you consider that is up to you (I phrased it this IQ way rather than say “he’s very smart” because he’s too stupid in certain areas for me to definitively say that, but also don’t want to paint him as some moronic knuckledragger, that’s his brother...). Unfortunately though he is pretty arrogant as a result and unwilling to admit areas he’s ignorant in...

He is actually a fascinating case study in being gifted in one area and frankly pathetic in others, and also, in my opinion, the downside of STEM being pushed as the be all and end all: though you get some thick cnuts in arts/humanities too.

I think so. I think not free, overly bureaucratic, unambitious. We used to talk about it more, I’ve kind of given up.
He loves Switzerland though.

Such a grim way to die. Being beaten to death by a brainwashed mob as some fat neckbeard hits you with the American flag...

The E in particular. Pretty much all your creationist "scientists" are engineers.

Look no further than Ben Carson. Apparently the guy is an extremely talented neuro surgeon.

Yeah. I had a really dull conversation before the election with my girlfriend’s sister in law who’s also an engineer (I’m surrounded). Works for a DoD contractor I think. She was voting Biden but had these stupid comments about the electoral college being a “balance” because OMOV wasn’t good because Dems would always win. Made no sense to me, I pointed out the later is more democratic which she didn’t get. I asked her what the balance was between and she said the 2 parties: I asked why should a system be a balance between two parties, shouldn’t the argument be it’s a balance between 2 systems...so much political discourse in the US is bastardised by the fact that the 2 party system is such an institution, people act like it’s some universal Pol Sci principle.

He is. Saved the life of my girlfriend’s best friend. Should have stuck to that

Yeah, I'd probably have started cappin' rioters at that point. Figured I would be next might as well take some with me. Where are his comrades? Cannot imagine a military member letting his mate get pummeled like that and not go all out.

Them must be some goooood drugs

Reminds me of some of the stuff the resistance grifters were coming out with during the Mueller investigation. All the stuff about dozens of sealed indictments, Steve Bannon getting the death penalty, “Mueller knows everything”, etc. Although the Mueller stuff was lacking the religious aspect I suppose.

It's not fear these phrases are just memes/canned phrases. They know their side and they know the phrases used, the equivalent to hipsters wearing classic band shirts but only knowing the greatest hits.

It's the same in every country, Brexiteers rarely know any detail but they know what famous Brexiteers say. It's why debating these people is difficult because they don't have an understanding to start with.

This shows that altercation at the door on a bigger screen. Warning it does show the police officer in the picture being beaten badly.

It was a great clip by Arnold. Great stunt to pull out the sword of Conan.

The F.B.I. arrests a man who had carried zip ties into the Capitol.

The F.B.I. arrested a man on Sunday who was photographed in the Senate chamber clad in military-style clothing and holding zip ties after internet researchers managed to piece together his identity.

Law enforcement officials said the man, Eric Gavelek Munchel, 30, was taken into custody in Nashville on federal charges. One of the officials said the authorities had recovered several weapons. No further details were available. Charges were expected to be announced soon.
