2021 American Civil War

DC police just said only 68 people have been arrested so far.. astounding how it is so low.

but they are actively looking for more numerous "persons on interests"

"Textbook Terrorism"

In a normal country, heads would have rolled. The cops were clearly instructed to stand back and let them get in and do whatever they want and then intervene later and escort them out.
For a country like US where cops have a hand on their guns when dealing with a normal car driver, the cops letting a bunch of terrorists get in, clearly shows they were instructed to do so by their higher ups.

I saw this yesterday.. says it all really.

Also it’s clear this was a highly planned operation on one level - a mixture of supporters recruited from right wing social media and conspiracy sites, and members of fringe quasi military groups giving them orders and supplying equipment.

I'll say this much: I don't think an extremist rightwing coup would be successful in 2021.

But if this keeps up, if the police continue to place themselves firmly on one side of political the divide, and if the army starts to do the same, if widespread public anger continues to get stoked... I can definitely see there eventually being a banana republic style military dictatorship.

As with any seditious movement, repetition legitimises, repetition legitimises, repetition legitimises, repetition legitimises, repetition legitimises. That's the Trump playbook, and it's clear that it's a tactic that's capable of working on a high proportion of US citizens regardless of the country's nominally large, educated middle class.

I know all of this may sound fantastical. But by the same token, nobody believed the fall of the Soviet Union would happen until it did. There really isn't much between a democracy and an autocracy other than popular faith in the institutions of power. The next couple of decades will be interesting. I reckon we're seeing something similar to the decline of Rome. The question is how far the bottom of that decline will be.

Of the people arrested only one was local, police are saying
That's very expected. The people that live in the DC area are largely federal govt employees or other professional type roles, plus your regular population of workers in more basic functions. In DC historically a lot of those are minorities. Overall it is an area that votes heavily Democrat.

More details of the other deaths:

This is encouraging at least. Lets see if they actually deliver though..

That's a ridiculously exaggerated caricature. There weren't that many cops.

It's also very flattering to Trump. Makes him look "retired rugby player" fat, rather than "decrepit old diabetes ridden bean bag" fat.

DC police has no authority over Federal property. It's the Capitol Police and Congress who controls it.
The NG is under DOD. I think it's a huge failure of The Capitol Police who is in charge. They have to answer a lot of questions.

Can anyone explain to me, why are there calls to impeach Trump at this point? Is it just so that it taints his legacy?

I'm not questioning whether or not he should be ousted from office, but surely the obvious and presumably only option is to hang tight for like two weeks or whatever it is until he's just gone anyway?

Is the worry that he might cause so much destruction in the meantime? I'd argue impeachment would add more fuel to the fire for the far right and cause more violence than just hanging in and waiting until his time is up.

Am I missing something?

i assume it means turning a blind eye deeming his behaviour acceptable

Photoshop?

I think I am leaning towards there being executive branch pressure on the Cap police to not overdue the preparation for yesterday.

I also feel the need to point out that what people should really be shocked about is that only 1 person was shot... especially considering this happened in 2013...

On October 3, 2013, in Washington, D.C., Miriam Carey, 34, a dental hygienist from Stamford, Connecticut, attempted to drive through a White House security checkpoint in her black Infiniti G37 coupe, accidentally hit a security rail, and was chased by the Secret Service to the United States Capitol where she was fatally shot by law enforcement officers.

I'm considering there may have been fears that the terrorists were armed, dangerous and waiting for an excuse to start a bloodbath. It's the only reasonable explanation.

Historically, the perception is that leftists don't like guns and aren't armed. That's why I keep telling the American left to buy more guns their opponents are armed and dangerous and feel safe knowing that the left isn't. Is it helpful? No, but it follows MAD doctrine, which seems to work.
