Number of youth voters 'definitely' voting jumps to 77 percent: poll

The number of youth voters in battleground states who said they “definitely” plan to vote in the November elections jumped to 77 percent in August, according to a new poll released by the progressive group NextGen America.

Seventy-seven percent of registered voters aged 18 to 35 across 13 battleground states said they “definitely will vote” in the upcoming elections, according to results of an August survey exclusively shared with The Hill.

It’s a 7-point increase since July, when a similar poll found just 70 percent of registered youth voters across the battleground states said they will “definitely vote.”

“Young people were already more fired up to vote in the election than four years ago, or even eight years ago, but we’re reaching into heights never before seen with how motivated and likely these young people are to vote this November,” NextGen America Executive Director Ben Wessel told The Hill.

The increase from July's survey was largely driven by voters who are backing Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. The August poll found 83 percent of Biden voters said they “definitely”’ will vote in November, a 7-point increase from July. Among surveyed youth voters backing President Trump, there was just a 2-point uptick from 73 percent to 75 percent, based on the poll.

Asked to rate their level of motivation to vote in November on a scale of 1 to 10, the majority of surveyed youth voters, 54 percent, said “10,” which is 4 points higher than July when 50 percent said the same. Biden voters also were more likely to rate their motivation at a 10, with 59 percent of the Democrat’s supporters rating a 10 compared to just 51 percent of Trump’s supporters, based on the poll.

Overall, Biden leads Trump by 27 points in the poll of youth voters across the battleground states, at 56 percent support compared to Trump’s 29 percent.

“If young people are fired up to vote in these 13 states it’s game over for Donald Trump and game over for the Republican-held Senate, as well,” Wessel said.

Fifty-six percent of the voters said they would vote for a Democratic Senate candidate, a 6-point increase from July, and just 28 percent said they would vote for a Republican, a 2-point decrease from July, based on the poll.

The poll surveyed youth voters across Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.

The poll was conducted by Global Strategy Group. Results are based on 1,000 interviews conducted Aug. 19-26. There is a confidence interval of 3.1 percentage points.

The Chris Wallace one should be fun.

Regardless who is moderating, Trump will control proceedings.

I'm not sure about that. Especially Chris Wallace. Trump supporters are furious that he's moderating.

Yup. Wonder how long it ll take for Trump to say he s biased.
Always thought Wallace has done a pretty good job moderating debates in the past too. He ll call out BS whether its Biden or Trump saying it. I just hope he s able to maintain control.

Of all the moderators, Chris Wallace has the most experience dealing with Trump directly. His last interview with Trump did a fairly good job of holding his lies to account also and not letting the interview go off the rails. Think this is a win for the Biden campaign.

Much of the military has historically leaned towards Republicans out of self-interest (better pay raises, benefits etc), so many of them still view voting Republican in those terms.

There's also a feck ton of uneducated imbeciles in the junior enlisted (and newly commissioned officer) ranks.

Wallace is a pro. He won’t let Trump get away with it, but he will hardly make it easy for Biden too. He won’t accept the bullshit of any of them.

I can't wait for this woman to pack on some political pounds and start knocking these feckers in to retirement.

She's more likely to eventually drift into establishment lanes, at least partially imo.

sometimes i wonder why i have jobs when it's clearly possible to make a living being a dumb internet person

He's not just a dumb internet person. Think he's the second most influential conservative radio host spewing hate filled rants and bigoted speeches and got rich too. fecking scumbag

I hear the label 'dumb' applied to politicians and media figures far too often. They're not dumb. Dumb doesn't get you into these positions. This is deception disguised as incompetence. Meanwhile, they are playing us like a fiddle.

Useful idiots then.

 the fact some people think Biden is more left than Bernie tells you everything you need to know about the Trump cult though .

You've got to hand it to Sanders. He is doing his best to promote Biden while sticking to his own ideals/policies. This is why Biden will probably get a decent amount of progressive votes, which alongside regular Dems, the identity politics brigade, and some GOP refugees, will make for a pretty broad tent in November.

Indeed. Biden and Harris would owe him some gratitude for sure. He's definitely taken one for the team. Its no surprise the Trump campaign is continuing to be radio silent on him despite his support of the opponent.

While I like some of this (;)) What struck me most was the freethinkers line ('this for freethinkers only, you ain't got no membership').

It makes me wonder why all the freethinkers sing from the same hymn sheet while claiming they are freethinking.

It also shows how useless the GOP attacks would've been against Sanders and thus future progressive nominees. Everytime you call Sanders a socialist, he hits back with policy.

In future elections, If you're going to call Biden, a centre-right neoliberal that will work with Mitch McConnell on legislation, the next coming of Mao and Stalin, you've lost all persuasion to anyone that isn't a fanatical trumpist. So I see the Republican attacks as nothing more than diluting the word socialism to the point that it means nothing in common vernacular and will only help progressives take over the party in 2024 and beyond.

I don't see any indication of progressives gaining much traction over the next four years. Elections tend to be less about policy and more about finding a likeable candidate who voters can identify on a personal level. Also, the center of mass in the Democratic party is still run by people who frame issues through identity instead of class, which is something progressives won't be overcoming anytime soon.

The caveat is that Biden is a well known public figure, so the GOP trying to frame Biden as a "radical leftist" isn't going to gain much traction. The same can't be said about Bernie, who would be much easier to frame in that way (i.e. taking his past quotes about Castro and twisting them).

I do think certain progressive ideals will become legislation in the next 4 years if Dems win all branches, a Green New Deal in everything but name only for example.
