Harris the clear winner. Bernie will be better when there are fewer nobodies clogging up time and he can target individuals.

They’re pushing for mayor Pete and he’s shite

Is that their first choice candidate changing? I can't be arsed to check but that would convince me. It says "nearly 60 percent of study participants experienced a shift in their candidate choices" which makes me think that is any shift at all and so if I move Mayor Pete from my seventh to sixth favourite I qualify.
From a separate article that references the article linked in the 538 link...

“McKinney and Warner (2013) showed that 35% of primary debate viewers switched their candidate preference and 22.6% went from being undecided to supporting a candidate after viewing the debate.”

Harris had a great 2nd half, I thought Buttchug won the first one quite easily but her attack on Biden will make the rounds on social media so that's what counts.
Unfortunately the same can be said for Bernie. We'll see after a few more debates.
I think he needs to appeal more to the base's sensibilities in order to win. Without overtly courting women, especially women of colour on emotional appeal, I dont think he makes it out of the Southern states better off than last time.

Yes, Bernie should go more racial/social justice. He's great on economic justice, but he'll need to expand if he wants to win the nomination.

His position is that ultimately racial/social/reproductive justice are all consequences of economic justice, and he's not wrong, but that's not where people are at. You have to play to the gallery.

Again, not on a great stream but I can't recall anything he said apart from an awkward answer on the police of his town. Agree that Harris won.

It was largely uneventful but he had better composure and ended his response without much pushback from others. The first half was a bit of a shitshow really because Gillibrand kept butting in.

I like my Marxism like I like my women - vulgar

That feels more useful information but if only a third or so of the viewers are changing and there aren't that many viewers and a fair chunk of those viewers wouldn't or can't vote in Dem primaries we're not looking at a huge change.

God, I hope I'm wrong though. I'm no Harris fan, at all, but if she gets enough of a bump against Biden that the media starts pushing her instead as the 'serious establishment candidate' I'd be hugely relieved.

She was getting pushed by MSM for a while when she announced so I can see it happening again.

From a general election point of view, one m way to look at the unsavory bits of what Harris did as a prosecutor and AG are that they could be things that make her appealing to people toward the right.

Toward the right and right wingers are two different things.

You’re not completely wrong though. Right wingers will not vote for Harris.

Oh btw, the only new policy idea on stage from anyone was Bernie's rotating judges. He's probably right on the danger of packing when the GOP comes back, and though I don't know if this is an adequate solution it will definitely make democratic rights less dependent on an old woman recovering from a fall, for example.

What exactly is he saying there? Is he talking lower federal judges or SCOTUS also?

its a very stupid idea though

I think circuit courts or whatever they're called.

I don't know enough about your judicial system to know what the outcome will be, but he is right about the risk of packing, which this does not carry.

It's stupid in that you cant effectively campaign on it and no one is mobilized by the idea. Just say court packing and move on bernold.

I’ve had a few lawyers pitch me that idea (not that I matter at all I’m really dog shit). It is a really interesting one, and I think it’s a good argument for addressing the current major flaws in judicial appointments (which is hurting Democrats imo). I’ll give the cliff notes on how I’ve had it explained tomorrow when I’m not falling asleep

I did not know Bernie shared it so I don’t know how he’d implement it. I do know though that it’s a concept that goes way over people’s heads because they don’t care. It’s not what people want to hear about the Supreme Court right now. The judiciary has long been a bigger priority for republicans than democrats in voting. I think the stuff first with Garland’s obstruction and then Kavanaugh has brought it into the public eye. People want a Democrat counterpunch they can get behind. So I don’t think it’s a vote winner. It will just kind of be lost in the ether, a bit like Yang’s input on UBI.

Apologies for any poor sentence structure, little sleep and on a phone

I watched tonight with a Republican and he was very impressed with her.

I think Harris would beat Trump in a general election and I think she’s a real player in this one. Bernie Warren Harris Pete are my four to watch now. I can’t see Joe Biden getting it, not after tonight

Buttigieg was a good little politician in the first one without doing much. His face when Swalwell told him to fire the chief of police and he looked like when you slap a puppy and they sit there gormless. He didn’t speak for about 20 minutes then, it was bizarre. I can’t believe that guy fought in a war.

They asked him a lot of questions though, so I think he’ll bump after tonight.

What the actual feck
That's a little under 1 months* salary for me

I half expected Yang to speak up at some point and be like 'hey guys, can I maybe have a go at answering a question? Asking for a friend.' I expected a lot more. Even the author who seemingly has no idea what to do, and babbles about the power of love spoke for twice as long as he did.

I still can't distinguish Swalwell, Bennet, Delaney, and Inslee.

i agree with nate silver time to go home and rethink my life

So to summarize Bernie’s performance as your Bernie correspondent for the evening … I don’t think he was all that sharp, though maybe a little better at the end. And I think he was a little monotonous, tonally and substantively. But maybe he gets a pass on not attacking Biden because Harris did it so effectively, and maybe he benefits indirectly if the top of the field tightens up. Overall, I don’t think the debate helped him, but I also don’t think there’s any sort of existential risk to him in the way that there might be for Biden depending on how voters feel about the Harris exchange.

(I felt it was more than "little better" towards the edwith his answer on war and his closing statement about a mass movement, but those were things that i get excited by and i dont think too many others)

I know this is childish, but does a guy with "Butt" in his name actually think there's a chance of him becoming president?

Bad enough that the current president's name means "fart" in some countries...

From Fart to Butt?

He should own it and run with it, tell everyone the Butt is gonna let the fart out and that he's gonna follow through on his promises.
