2020 US Elections | Biden certified as President | Dems control Congress

This Presidential election should have proven to anyone who was still curious whether "Nazi Germany" could still happen today. There are tens of millions of people who genuinely believe that the Socialist Democrats stole the election. Imagine a situation where democratic norms had broken down even further, and enough military leaders were willing to accept that reality. There would be nothing stopping Trump completing a coup (and any impartial observer has to admit that he's attempting one even now).

Look at the reaction to the BLM protests, then think of the protests that would occur if such a coup actually took place, and further consider the reaction to that. I have no doubt tens of millions of Americans would be slowly getting used to the idea that you need to violently repress these "radicals" and "Marxists", maybe start rounding them up and putting them in jail before they can burn down any more city centres. Remember that even Hitler didn't manage to grab complete control before the Reichstag fire.

It's not unthinkable, it's just very scary.
Jim Marrs wrote a book called ‘The Rise of the Fourth Reich’ in 2008, he would get a bit batshit when trying to explain potential minutiae & conspiracies, but his overall broad strokes brushing of how a new form of fascism was already afoot in the US was compelling. It was a bit sensational coming so soon after 9/11, but he was somewhat prescient about how things could turn out in the next couple of decades.

That said, the institutions are still in place to resist any coup attempt by Trump at this stage in the game. Don’t thing the mindset has permeated too deeply to cause a toppling of them. I don’t imagine we would see Trump on a tank rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue followed by any appreciable military.

What on earth has the Arizona Republican Party become? The Independent reports:

"On Monday, the official Twitter account of the Arizona Republican Party surprised many locals by asking if people would give their lives in the fight over the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The retweet was from right-wing activist Ali Alexander, in which he said he is 'willing to give my life for this fight.'

'He is. Are you?' the state GOP added.

Later, another tweet appeared that read: 'This is what we do, who we are. Live for nothing, or die for something.' ..."
Keep striking sparks over tinder, it’s inevitable that one will catch hold. This is surreal.

The Plot Against America is a great book, and a very good miniseries, btw. Not modern setting, but tackles the "it could have happened here" argument.

Totally agree, finished the miniseries a few weeks ago. Haven’t read the book, but it will be next in the queue.

Ooh I hope they were speaking literally. Imagine giving your life for a piece of shit like Donald J Trump. Wasters.

Is Texas going to secede if their lawsuit fails?
I'll happily sign a petition if they need signatures for it.
What are the chances that other red states follow suit?
They should take FL and all the other red southern states too. Be like old times but this time they should be let go. ;)

LARPers are restless after the SCOTUS news...

Fun fact. Texas can (hypothetically) still legally break itself up into multiple states per its agreement to join the United States.

That’s a new one for me.
I had heard that it was the only state that could secede. So that’s not correct?

I wonder how many of the GOPers around the US who actually believe in Trump's bogus fraud claims and how many who are just bandwagoning for whatever reason. I also wonder what's worse. A monumental breakdown of common sense and sanity for those who believe in fraud, or a monumental breakdown in ethical and moral behavior by consciously undermining democracy and promoting a de facto coup.

What an absolutely disgusting bunch of low life. On the next D-day commemoration they should all gather and collectively piss on the graves of the thousands of Americans buried in Normandy. Their sacrifice obviously means feck all to the GOP anymore. I know it's a cliche, but anyway...

I think they're mostly bandwagoning.

It's not too dissimilar to the way football fans can become convinced that a particular decision against them is a sign of corruption. But the opposition have a completely different opinion despite seeing the exact same evidence.

Tribalism in politics is bad everywhere. Social media has made things worse than ever. But in the US, it seems to be amplified further by its unique heterogeneity.

Lots of stats going around about how Trump has now raised over $200m for his campaign since the election, and spent under $10m on court cases and legal fights.

The ultimate grift?

No, it’s just something stupid Texans claim that gets repeated because it sort of sounds like one of those quirky things that could be true due to the manner in which it joined...but it’s not.

The dividing Texas into 5 states up thing is ‘more’ true because of a clause inserted when they joined the US but that is superseded by Congress’ sole authority to create new states per the Constitution so it’s mostly a moot point.

He's going to use that money for his 2024 campaign.

Malcolm Gladwell (yes, I know....) did a podcast on this that’s made the case that poor grammar in the constitution opens it up for being a real thing.

He will intervene. The feck he will.

He's gone right off on one today. Actually mentioning COVID and Germany because they had a record number of deaths yesterday so they aren't the country to emulate regarding how they are handling the pandemic.

Then there are several nonsensical angry rigged election tweets. And then these two beauties...

Nothing to do with him?

"Majority." That word does not mean what Trump thinks it means.

Just call LOSER on his twitter feed and he'll probably blow up. Like literally, blow up.

:wenger:

Will the electoral college votes be made public as soon as they've been cast, or do we have to endure another three weeks of this manic behavior, because they're supposed to be revealed by the oldest virgin in Congress in January or whatever the feck those idiotic founding fathers decided?

So Lindsey Graham then?
