2020 US Elections | Biden certified as President | Dems control Congress

Can you explain why its taking 3 days to count these last states?
It takes a long time to count a lot of states. Look at California, New York, Texas: they're all well under 90%. It's just that those states are not particularly interesting.

It takes a long time because of mail ballots, because of peculiar rules, because processing these ballots is complicated considering how many different votes they contain (President, House, Senate, whatever initiatives). With mail ballots, they have to do shit like signature matching, and scanning the ballots individually.

Not sure what you mean, pretty much zilch has changed since this morning. Voting has been going as expected in all states, if anything GA looks like it could be the biggest upset and that's in Biden's favour.
Clayton and Savannah (both Dem strongholds) both have c10% left to declare

Serious question : Why is counting taking so long now . Seems a bit ridiculous that you can't count votes faster in a presidential election

So this isn't strange or unprecedented?
OK, so many mail votes means a lot of extra processing. Got it.

Nevada locked in for Biden soon? Arizona doesn't look like it's shifting closer to Trump anymore. Pennsylvania would just be an added bonus now.

Unless Trump goes all Trumplike and just tries to tie everyone up with lawsuits this should be done and dusted, right?

Nice to see an election result that doesn't make me reach for the Toilet Duck.

Brazil does 110 million+ and deliver results some 4 hours after polls close. :p

(But I know the practical difference which is that Brazil run an all in-person vote, with fully electronic counting and reporting.)

Yeah that makes it a lot easier. I suspect the criteria that votes can be mailed up to a certain date, giving them time to arrive and, especially, opening and prepping the ballots for processing takes a good chunk of time.

Good to know. I was speculating on why there is a week between the voting and the counting as berbatrick indicated.
Yes. That is time to get all voting machines transferred safely and systematically to counting centers which are more centralised than in US Given that logistics in India is still difficult and voting machines have to collected from even smallest of hamlets of less than 100 people.

EDIT: Not discounting nor underestimating the serious art of conducting and counting upwards of 1bn votes

Bear in mind I'm neither American nor an expert on their elections, merely someone who read an unhealthy amount of the subject.

But no, it's not unprecedented at all. In 2000, with the whole Florida recount controversy, it took over a month to declare the final result. That's an extreme example but it's not unusual that states keep counting for days. It's just that usually the electoral vote can be called in one candidate's favour on election night so it doesn't really matter.

Presumably, all that does is delay the inevitable?

They just said on CNN that the Biden campaign team expect their lead in Arizona to narrow today due to votes from rural areas being counted. But then after that they fully expect their lead to grow again and ultimately they'll win the state.

So when the Arizona lead tightens later on tonight can we please not have people on here panicking and conceding to Trump whilst Baz bangs on about Betfair.

It looks like Biden is taking all the remaining states except NC of course.

No doubt mentioned before, but what I find most baffling (it's probably not the right term, actually, as nothing actually baffles me anymore - most semi-baffling then) about the "evangelical" support for Trump is that many of these people apparently don't even like him very much. They vote for him because...God wants him to win.

He's an asshole (they pretty much admit as much), but God works in mysterious ways - or something along those lines.

It's like voting Republican just...because (regardless of the candidate) - but with the added element of...well, "God wants it", I guess.

It's pretty scary. In some ways, even scarier than the full-blown MAGA cultists, who obviously endorse the supposedly "Christian" part too - but their game is something else nevertheless: they don't consider Donald flawed - which the other category actually does (but they vote for him nonetheless).

The leaders of different churches basically say who their followers should vote for. If they said that they should vote for Kanye W since god wills it, then most of them would. Or like the catholic church 500 years ago giving kings their right of rule through god...
Same with Biden getting endorsed by afro-american church leaders in the primary.

Pretty much. I have a feeling that the courts are going to turn on Trump and throw out most or all of their lawsuits. Most Americans are patriots and his propensity to litigate is embarrassing to their nation.

Not a chance of that happening. All hell will break loose.

Massive 'sliding doors' moment for recent human history. Wonder how Al Gore would have reacted to 9/11!

Old tweet but highly relevant with all fraud mongering propaganda'

Thought he had the SC in his pocket with his recent appointments?

He will take it in a mature manner, no doubt about it

I don't think they're likely to disenfranchise legal votes. Despite Trump's attempts at spreading disinformation there are probably close to zero illegal votes submitted.

Even with paper ballots surely you could just train more number of people to count them , it's hardly rocket science.
