2016 Olympics host decided today

To be fair, if Obama didn't campaign for the Olympics to be held in Chicago, Faux News would come out with accusations of him not being patriotic (add a dashing of Birther "truths" to support the obvious reason why he's not patriotic) or lacking "homegrown roots" or something.

Sorry I'm not buying that

is that even a debate? The inbreds hate him.

quite funny how much they are enjoying this though

They have no power and are now a racist party...great future :smirk:

Yes, Marcos. We should all send him PMs congratulating him on his country's success.

Don't we have a poster from Rio on here (or maybe some other Brazilian city)? I seem to remember one.

If so, he'll be a happy little chappy at the moment.

Marcos is from Argentina and lives In Buenos Aires.

Close (ish) but no cigar.

In all honesty, considering our state of affairs Obama had no business wasting his time championing a cause for his home city, Lord knows he wouldnt have done it had it been New York City or something. I dont think it reflects on his presidency that poorly that Chicago lost, it reflects poorly that he felt the need to get involved in it.
That was my first thought as well. But from what I've heard the leaders of the other three countries all got involved (I didn't watch it so maybe that's wrong), so it didn't really give Obama much choice. If he hadn't turned up he'd be copping a lot of blame at the moment for Chicago performing so badly in the voting.

The one I'm thinking of isn't one of the main posters. In fact, he may not even be around any more, but I'm fairly certain there was someone somone from Rio on here a while back. Anyone else remember him, or was it one of my invisible friends?

All leaders get involved, the amount of money and interest it brings to the host city and country is incredible. If Chicago had got it, the regeneration in the area would have created lots of jobs and boosted the local economy. Any president would have supported it. All this 'I think Obama shouldn't have partaken, he has more important things to do' is more knee jerk reactions trying for some strange reason to discredit the guy. Any president would have backed it. Obama was round the corner on the day for a meeting anyway. What you saw yesterday was the IOC committee members trying to break the power base of the American IOC members. They've felt for years that the American members had to much power and got what ever they asked for. The American Olympics is the biggest market for it though so they generate the most cash. Still the right decision was made yesterday. Everyone agrees Rio was the right choice. I really don't understand all this oh something didn't work it must Obama's fault.

good post. As an American I would have liked Chicago to get the nod. But for the Olympics to be held in South America for the first time can only be good for the sport.
mind ya I only watch the swimming and sprint events. Still the Olympics is a very symbolic event for bring all nations together. for the good of sport, the 'politics' needed to be kicked out of it.

Speaking for myself and i don't know how the decision was reached, but Chicago was perhaps not the best choice to go up against cities like Rio and Madrid with. I mean no offence to any natives of Chicago on here however the IOC can be quite set in its ways. Britain was told that London would be the only acceptable host option, now i'm happy about this, i'm from down here, but you can understand why others from elsewhere would feel a bit put out.

San Francicso, Boston maybe.

If the World Cup goes well in SA, perhaps we'll see them throw their hat in the ring for 2020.

Why?

I don't get that comment either. It's one of the most important cities in the world and quite breathtaking at times to look at. As city locations go, Madrid is probably the dullest of the lot, stuck on a high plateau in the centre of a barren dustbowl wasteland with a small stream running through the middle of it. If any city was being stupid here and wasting a ton of money in the process, it was Madrid, as I commented with a grin several years ago to my wife when they declared their candidature. There was simply no way they were going to get it in 2016 when London had it for 2012, and also, Barcelona had it in 92. Why would a country of 45 million people get two Olympic games in a space of time of little over 20 years?

If Chicago isn't a suitable city, then how the feck is Boston?

Chicago is the third largest city in America, is culturally rich, has a great history in sport and is one of the best looking cities in the world (the skyline from Lake Michigan is breathtaking and probably the best in the States).

I don't think there's enough square mileage in Boston to handle an event like the Olympics. It would have to be shared with Connecticut and Rhode Island.

I prefer a state effort versus one city. Like California, Florida and Texas with major cities in each state able to handle various events. Easy travel means in all via air, highway and rail.

I think Miami would be fecking class for the winter Olympics ;)

I'll tell you one American city that could do an ace job at the Winter Olympics, Denver, haha but we turned them down in 1976 so I don't forsee that ever happening. I liked the mention of San Francisco, but to be honest, even in the summer SF is fecking a cold place, plus I just dont think there is enough room, in the immediate Bay Area to build an Olympic stadium and all the other things. Stunning city though.

I guess that racist prick has never heard of Cabrini-Greens in Chicago.

I'm glad that Chicago lost because for one I wanted Rio to win, because I will probably go to them, and furthermore all the people there thought it was a forgone conclusion, like feck it was.

The Beijing olympics had venues in Hong Kong and Qingdao. So using all the facilities of the surrounding area arn't that unusual.

It's not unusal for certain events to be held outside the host city for environmental reasons. Yachting, mountain biking, rowing, 3 day eventing, football, etc.

True, but over a 1000 miles away is taking the piss a bit.

Where did anyone mention 1000 miles?

The distance between hong kong and Beijing, nothing to do with Boston. All we are saying is it's not unusual to spread out the events to other areas. So havig some events in Conneticut etc wouldn't be such a bad thing if Beijing can have events over a 1000 miles away.
