2012 World Snooker Championships

Carter v O'Sullivan in the final. I founds the semis a tad boring. The quality was good, but iin both matches one player created a big lead midway and for the rest of the match the other was chasing without ever really getting close. Hopefully it's a tight one now. Interesting to see if Carter tries Ebdon-style tricks...

Unfortunately I can't see anything other than an O'Sullivan win now.

Unfortunately? He might be a nut case but he's the entertaining player to watch. Poetry on the baize.
I think if Carter doesn't let Ronnie get away from him early on then it could be a lot closer then people. They're old training buddies so they'll know each other's game inside out.
Carter's very underrated. You don't get to 2 WC finals without being one of the best players.

I had to back Carter at 4/1, just to cover myself as much as anything else. Plus Ebdon will have told him to deliberately slow down and try get to him, and if Ronnie does start to lose his head Carter'll have a great chance. The way he's played though I do only see one winner.

Ronnie's a fantastic player, but I just don't particularly like him or his attitude at times. He would deserve it, but that doesn't mean I like him.

Carter is a very good player who will probably push him quite far though. I can see it maybe being something like 18-13 by the end to O'Sullivan.

O'Sullivan 3 ahead. A long way to go but he should do it. He has been playing extremely well and he is probably the most naturally gifted player to ever play the game. He'd have far more world championships by now if he wasn't slightly insane.

Final day has started. Ronnie should do it, has taken this frame superbly.

O'Sullivan looks as focussed as I've seen him.

I think it was after he won his 2nd world championship his temperament was so poor. He would miss easy pots or take on stupid shots and let those misses wind himself up.

Ronnie just saying it might be his last tournament, especially if he wins as he thinks going out as World Champions is the best way to go.

If he's not serious and is just doing his attention seeking I think its a bit disrespectful to Hendry as it will no doubt over shine his retirement at this tournament, I think Hendry deserves more than that.

Attention seeking as usual.

Funnily enough there was a piece on his Sports Psychologist after. While I was writing that post I did start to think about whether it's part of Ronnie's approach to the game and how he gets himself fired up. It's always been clear that he finds the motivation side difficult as with all due respect to the other professionals I've seen Ronnie beat himself more than I have seen players genuinely out play him.

I think Williams is the only player I have seen beat an in form, firing and up for it O'Sullivan about 8 or so years ago when Williams was a potting machine much the same way Hendry was although for not nearly the sustained period Hendry did it for.

Anyway, off on a tangent, the point I am making is that I think O'Sullivan gives himself personal challenges as targets to keep his game at a high level. He's doing it in a more positive way now, he used to get disinterested and go for an outrageous shot to give himself a bit of an adrenaline kick, now I think he gets off on adding to his legacy and the thought of finishing and being thought of as the most talented player to play the game - and as such one of the greatest under achievers ever compared to Hendry's trophy winning machine.

Exactly why I don't like him. Attention seeking as per usual. He doesn't need to do this to get attention, but then goes ahead and does it anyway because he craves attention. He won't retire; he's just making headlines.

Ronnie pretty much beat everyone comfortably, deserved winner. 4 time champ with John Higgins.

He looked like he was going to cry in that interview, really happy for him, he's an absolute genius.

deserved winner, not an amazing final because carter was under too much pressure (put himself under a lot of pressure).

Delighted to see Ronnie win it, when the guy concentrates and wants to win there is no one in snooker that can stop him, absolutely fantastic player.

Neo, Pexbo and Cheesey...

If you think Ronnies strange attitude or constant change of mood about the game is attention seeking then you obviously don't have a clue. Read his book and then look into it further, he suffers with despression and other mental demons stemming from his life growing up, especially with his dad. So when you see him play one match do an interview all happy then play another in the same tournament and mess about, blow kisses at the camera, sit with a towek on his head or say he hates the sport its just bow every day people are with depression etc. One day they spring out of bed and get loads done, next they can't move.

Can see how it migbt frustrate some snooker fans but this is how he is, very glass half empty even sometimes when he's played amazing he can pick fault or want to walk out.

End of the day he's the best player ever and great to watch with great drama about him. Carter tried to bore him out like Ebdon and Higgins do but he was too strong. Nearly every frame was tactical or had reds on the cussions because of Carters approach. Not the best final as a result.

Crikey, I remember that Ebdon game actually. That must've been about 8 or so years ago, right? Ebdon's average shot time was through the roof - it was so blatant! Took ages on even the simplest shots.

Great post.

In relation to the final, I really enjoyed it. I love the tactical side and O'Sullivan was absolutely tremendous throughout the whole tournament.

Depression isn't an excuse. He's been saying for the last 3-4 years he's going to leave. He knows he's the most talented player to have grace Snooker which is why he say's and does what he feels like because people will take an interest.

He's also had his fair amount of controversy through out his career. To say it was down to depression is irrelevant. He's trying to spice up a sport that isn't really that exciting to the general public and by doing this sometimes comes across as an idiot.

Don't agree with that at all, he has a lot of personal demons, he doesn't walk out of games for shits and giggles.

Read my later post on it you might agree with it more.

He's not cursed is he? If conceding a match after being 4-1 down isn't attention seeking then I don't know what is. Perhaps he saw a ghost that day.

Attention seeking for what? Everyone knows he's the best around, conceding that match only attracted negative attention.

You kind of answered your own question. He attracts negative attention all the time for no apparent reason what so ever.

Given you have no idea how severe his depression is then I would think it wise to not detract from it as a reason at all.

It's a very serious illness, that post is the most childish response I have ever seen.

I'm very aware of the seriousness of depression. My point is he's had so much unnecessary controversy in his snooker career, not only his recent comments (which have extended in the past few years) that have caused a stir.

He's said and done loads that haven't done himself any good. I don't know much about his personal problems but how long has he been getting help? I remember a few years ago he took up long distance running and he said it helped him mentally.

Yes the depression will be a factor into Ronnie's behaviour but it cannot be the sole excuse for his actions.

How did you feel about Cantona? He had no conditions that we were aware of yet is very comparable in his attention seeking ways, no?
