2010's Best Albums

My list:

1 Cippled Black Phoenix - I, Vigilante
2 Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles II
3 Blut Aus Nord - What Once Was... Liber I
4 Rosetta - A Determinism of Morality
5 Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
6 Best Coast - Crazy for You
7 Xasthur - Portal of Sorrow
8 Alcest - Écailles de lune
9 Burzum - Belus
10 Boris & Ian Astbury - BXI

What. The. feck?

Has anyone heard of any of those bands?

Or am I considerably more middle-aged than I feared? :(

EDIT: Ok, so I've heard of Ian Astbury. Which does make me wonder if all the other stuff on that list is kind of niche...

Flying Lotus is fecking great.

Crystal Castles are pretty well known I think.

You are old.

Seems to me that most of his list is metal rock
Best Coast, Crystal Castles and Flying Lotus aren't.

Eh? If you've never heard of it how do you know it isn't good?
Because they're not called Oasis!

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma
Black keys- Brothers
The Tallest Man on Earth- wild hunt
Roots- How i got over
Gil scott heron- i am new here
Joanna Newsom - have one on me
Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Simone white -Yakiimo

Not sure I'll get to 10 this year as been unemployed for tail end of the year and that's curbed my spending.

Anyhoo, these would all feature (in alphabetical order) -

Band of Horses - Infinite Arms
Belle & Sebastian - Write About Love
Bombay Bicycle Club - Flaws
Cherry Ghost - Beneath This Burning Shoreline
Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me
Johnny Cash - American XI
Jonsi - Go
MGMT - Congratulations
Micah P Hinson - Pioneer of the Saboteurs

All of the above I thought were very good but the winner for me and one that I can seperate from the rest is, High Violet by The National.

I loved the first Arcade Fire album, really like the second and was very much 'meh' about the third so it isn't there due to the disappointment. Of the others, I would probs put MGMT as the second best although any Micah P album deserves a strong recommendation and of course the last of the Johnny Cash 'American' series is a standout.

There's albums by James, Interpol, Antony & The Johnsons that I haven't got round to listening to yet either which would generally be there or there about, although the Interpol one might pass me by I reckon.

YouTube - The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio

it seems I did get to 10.

good shout by Circus Monkey was the Gil Scot Heron album as well - the only album I bought this year that was solely due to hearing it playing in the shop I was in.

In no particular order:

Teen Dream - Beach House
Crystal Castles II - Crystal Castles
Tourist History - Two Door Cinema Club
The Golden Year - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
Idolise - We Are Animal
Immersion - Pendulum
xx - The xx
The Logic of Chance - Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip
Cosmology - Rolo Tomassi
Spirit in the System - The Qemists

Yeah, I'd completely forgotten about the Gil album and Joanna Newsom which were both v good. The Toro y Moi - Causers of This was excellent too. Maybe not so bad a year after all.

Quite a few interesting dance scenes emerging as well.

My record of the year

I think Teen Dream by Beach House probably tops the list for me. I haven't followed new releases this year, but it stands out from the ones I know are 2010.

High Violet by The National is close enough, but to be honest the fact that it came out with the impossible expectations set by Boxer to bear means it didn't quite reach the top. Boxer is probably in my top 3 all time.

Vampire Weekend's Contra and Congratulations by MGMT would probably both make it to a Top 10 list of the year, as I really enjoyed both.

Same goes for Arcade Fire - The Suburbs -- I just don't tire of their sound! Another outsider for a spot is The Morning Benders with Big Echo. Their poppy yet expiremental sound really struck a chord (he-he) with me! The Gaslight Anthem's American Slang is probably in with a shout too.

Other albums I can remember enjoying from this year are:

Best Coast - Crazy For You
Broken Bells - S/T
She & Him - Volume Two
Yeasayer - Odd Blood
Bonnie Prince Billy & The Cairo Gang - The Wonder Show of the World
Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History
The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt
Band of Horses - Infinite Arms
Against Me! - White Crosses

But none of these really feel strong enough to warrant a place in a yearly top 10 list for me however. I missed out on a lot, and I see top 10 / 20 lists from people with the same taste as me consisting of 50% artists I've never even heard of, so I can't really complain! Heck, I haven't even listened to Age of Adz yet.

2011 should be great though, new Iron & Wine in January, new Death Cab, new Manchester Orchestra. I'm liking the the sound of Adele's new single from her upcoming album, and I'm really REALLY hoping for something by Bon Iver. It's a long shot as nothing's been announced, but it's about time. Can't live on For Emma forever (he-he)!

xx - The xx

Don't mean to nitpick, but XX was '09. Otherwise it would be top of my list for sure!

Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) had an album out with Volcano Choir this year I think.

Next year will be all about Panda Bear's follow up to Person Pitch for me. Hopefully a new TV on the Radio, Beirut and Fleet Foxes too.

That was last year! And it (unfortunately) doesn't come close to what he did in the cabin and released under the Bon Iver moniker for me. It was more of a collaboration thing though.

The Blood Bank EP released last year as well was more the Bon Iver sound I hope to hear in a future album. Really loved that.

Other than that, I'm reallyl ooking forward to the four albums you mentioned. Beirut (has it been confirmed?) and Fleet Foxes especially!

Replace it with Contra then.

Something new from Bon Iver would be good. There is also Blood Bank as well as For Emma.

I could have included The Drums, Jonsi, Kele or Magnetic Man in my list as well but there weren't enough spaces.

Overall I've been a bit disappointed by the releases I've heard this year, certainly the lower half of my top 10 are nothing special. That said, I'll probably discover a bunch of amazing 2010 releases next year (I hope).

Mainly looking forward in 2011 to a new Astronautalis album, hopefully his collaborative album with P.O.S too.

Since I didn't buy/listen to that many albums this year, I'll keep mine rather short.

Must check out that Boris album.

Anyway, my choices:

Snakes for the Divine by High on Fire
Snakes_For_The_Divine.jpg

Blood and Fire by The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster
Bloodandfire.jpg

The Golden Year - Ou Est Le Swimming Pool
Cosmology - Rolo Tomassi

Had forgot about Ou Est Le Swimming Pool. Definitely up there, somewhat for sentimental reasons though.

I'd say Rolo Tomassi was my musical discovery of the year. Had never heard them when I rambled into an off venue concert at Iceland Airwaves. They were absolutely fantastic. Bought the album and even though I like it, it's not patch on seeing them live. The guitar player is extremely talented and the girl oozes sex appeal on stage (and off).

1. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Tame Impala - Innerspeaker

Onra - Long Distance
Aloe Blacc - Good Things
The Roots - How I Got Over
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
Bilal - Airtight's Revenge

Only five of my list are Metal bands. And even though Rosetta are extremely heavy the guys who run Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives consider they play "altenative "post metal" wankery with no metal riffs.
Your list has 10 bands/artists so 5 would still be most, especially since the other 5 would not fall in the same category).
But I'm not having a dig or anything at your list, just pointing out why many of those names won't ring a bell as I assume many here don't listen to this type of music*

*Based solely on the bands mentioned in the entertainment forum.

Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is definitely album of the year for me. I can't really think of any other albums that have stood out to me, tbh.

Big Boi - Sir Lucious Leftfoot
Nas and Damian Marley - Distant Relatives
The Black Keys - Brothers
LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening
Hot Chip - One Life Stand
Roots - How I got over
The Arcade Fire- Suburbs

My Sick Uncle - (500) days of Weezy

Taking into account what happened, there are some really weird lyrics in The Golden Year.

And Rolo Tomassi are immense, which album you got? Hysterics is the first one and I prefer it to Cosmology but Cosmology is still brilliant.

Aye, I read in an interview that Charles did write the lyrics.

Only got Cosmology, will have to get my hands on the other one.

Don't worry paul, all it means is that it's been a poor year for music. The best album of the year is the Arcade Fire one, and that's not even that amazing. Well it is, but it doesn't rescue the year as a whole. The Black Keys album is a good one too, but it's really par for the course for them and mad that it's possibly the second best album of the year. The Walkmen's album was good too, though I can't recall the name of it, likewise the Sufjan Stevens one. Laura Marling and Caitlin Rose both had really good alt country style albums but good in their own field rather than anything definitive. (Like most albums listed here I'd venture) The only act all year that raised my eyebrow was Janelle Monae, one or two of her tunes answered the question as to what would have happened if black american artists listened to Stax and Motown. Not my cuppa rosy exactly, but when it's good it's good, the production is fantastic (for anyone interested YouTube - Janelle Monáe - Tightrope [feat. Big Boi] (Video) I like a lady who can dance). I probably forgot a couple of sublime albums and made a tit of myslef.

Haven't seen it mentioned yet but I really liked Becoming a Jackal by Villagers.

That bored me to death, but I'm a contrary twat and that was hyped to feck over here.

I'm going to spend my evening listening to all the shit in this thread I've never heard of.
