17 year old Lazio talent Joseph Minala

Not really, I'm sure Giggsy can still keep up with most of the team in training. The problems may arise if he has to play 3 games in 10 days or something?

Fitness dpoesnt always have a lot to do with age. I know a bloke in his 50's who runs marathons for fun, in times that mich younger people would be proud of.

The article (link posted above) about it being a problem in Nigeria is interesting. Seems such players get on alright for a couple of years until age catches up.

Fair enough, but in this day and age I would still fully expect top coaches to be able to tell the difference between such age gaps. Recovery of the muscles etc.

Some people tend to look a lot older though.

This is Shelvey at 19 years old.

Robben was a similar case too.

Yeah, it doesn't help that he's African, where there's a very prominent precedent for age lying. That could be prejudicing us to a degree.

Still, he looks fecking 40. It's not even "he could be a bit older".. he looks a whole lifetime older.

When you look at him you instantly think he's about 40, but when you see in that article that he was in an orphanage for '2 years' you know it was really twenty.

The annecdotal evidence tells you otherwise - if you believe that the lieks of Okocha and Taribo West were older than they claimed.

Older people can be very fit, especially if they have the benefit of being professional sportsmen, getting the right treatment and well looked after. Pro-boxers can go on into their 40's. You'd expect mnost to be found out, but not all. They could I suppose, just be exceptionally fit.

We should put a bid in for Patrick off Eastenders. I heard he's a decent holding midfielder.

It's almost impossible to believe he's under 25, let alone 17.

Some people do have medical conditions which cause the appearance of premature aging, but wouldn't they usually have all kinds of health problems associated with it? And it's usually quite obvious from the facial features that they have some sort of condition. This guy just looks like a regular 40 year old.

I would guess he might be late 20s, early 30s.

"When asked about his favourite moment, Minala said watching Nelson Mandela leave Robben Island after following the ANC members progress since watching his incarceration in the 60's"

Even if you saw his mum give birth to him 17 years ago you'd still find it hard to believe he's 17

He's not likley to be 35, but, if for example he's 22 or 23 - that might be the reason he looks so good playing against 16 year olds in youth tournaments.

But if he is 22 or 23, then he's still prematurely ageing. If there's a condition that makes a 22 year old look 35 then I don't see why it can't make a 17-year old look 35 (although this is pure speculation on my part).

He cant be 41. Their is no way a 41 year old could keep up with youth players(bar Giggs of course).

Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan were still dominant pitchers into their 40s. Clemens was on PEDs. I'm sure an adult taking banned substances would still keep up with players half his age. Herschel Walker is o/a age 50 and can still run a sub 4.5 40-yd dash.

Im not sure what you mean. My point was that he may not be excessively old - only a bit older, and his extra physical development might make him look like a better player than the 16/17 year olds around him. Compared to people his own age he may not be any better than average.

I guess time will tell.

He can tell his fellow Lazio youth mates about how great Pele, Maradona, and Cruyff were, having seen them play live, while they debate Messi and Ronaldo.

Neatly all the players on that list are aged considerably by going bald or grey whilst not getting a sympathetic hair cut or dying it. It is far from uncommon for people to go bald and grey in their early twenties.

African nations have been proven many times in the past to be age dopers. Minala has not gone bald or grey, he is supposed to be 17 FFS. Physically his body is of a fully mature man, not impossible at that age but his skin is aged considerably. Unless he has a condition then you have to be very suspicious. Lazio said that all they have seen is his birth certificate.

It's impossible for a player to get away with age cheating in a top European League in the 21st century. Do you think Lazio would insist he is 17 if he was in his mid-late 20's. Lukaku and Victor Moses all look at least 5 years older but nobody made a fuss about their physique or facial features. Rooney before the hair transplant looked at least 40 when he was only 25

He looks about 17. Maybe I've just got used to seeing really overly developed human beings in the NFL, but his face looks pretty young in high quality pictures.

I promise you its not. Some clubs simply don't test
