15 year old Indian striker Nipun Chauhan gets United trials

Indias captain, Sunil Chhetri, just signed for Sporting CP.

Pretty amazing that a country with 1 billion people can't produce a world class footballer, and countries with small populations and competiting sports like Northern Ireland, Republic Of Ireland, Wales, Uruguay can.

I've never seen an Indian player at any kind of club.

How are Indians not good at football. There's a billion people for feck sakes.

Same reason there's no yanks good at cricket, or Russians good at rugby, I suspect. They don't give a flying feck about it. Their sporting consciousness rests in other arenas.

Football is universally more popular than those sports, and even the nations who usually don't give a shit about it have had some decent players. China and India have had none.

Sometime ago I saw a documentary on an academy that's being run in India which takes the most talented youngsters and harasses those skills. Apparently they play vs 'top' Indian sides. Can't recall what it is called. Any Indian caftards know about this?

Michael Chopra, no?

Not sure if he's considered 'indian'. He's a geordie lad, no?

If we consider him indian, would luciano narsingh be indian? Narsingh has played in the dutch first team and had a superb season last year in eredivisie.

neil taylor is part-indian parentage though he's a welsh lad and he's established at swansea at the premier league level.

Chopra's dad is from India I think. So not sure.

Gil, think of the shirt sales to a billion people

There was an Indian player at some club in MLS who couldn't even get a minute. Can't remember his name. Think he played for Sporting Kansas.

I do love an underdog story of a player who breaks through the barriers of his upbringing. A poor kid from India getting a chance? Sign me up for his bio!

:nono:

Sun Jihai started for City and was there for six years. Zhang Chengdong is a striker playing for S.C. Beira-Mar in the Portuguese top level. He managed six goals in 26 games at age 23 in a crap side. All joking aside, Dong managed a game for United and did at one point look like a potential quality striker before being shipped off to Belgium. Fan Zhiyi played for Crystal Palance (and Dundee). No superstars but solid players.

There's a lot of money being poured in Chinese football. I can imagine it'll pay off for the youngsters in five years. I.e. they will manage to get into respective lower league sides.

As for Indian, I've got nothing.

 And white people can't jump, and black people can't swim. And so on and so forth. Absolutely ludicrous.

Oh I forgot about that nation of Whiteland, yeah

It's not a racial thing, you racist. Indians can't play football; that's something you've just got to deal with.

India are FIFA ranked 163rd in the world; their nearest competitors are the footballing giants of Afghanistan, who are themselves ranked higher than India. There are only 205 FIFA ranked nations, and the vast majority of those nations ranked lower than India are all island states with one pitch and a population of 60-600 souls.

Face it, mate; India are just shit at football.

Don't be daft. It's not that Indians can't play football, that infers there's something physical holding them back, it's simply they don't.

It's like saying an Englishman can't play basketball. He could if he grew up in a basketball culture.

As I said. Decent players.

You're right. I'm sorry, I forgot starting in the PL doesn't make you a decent player. Silly me thinking the league is the best in the world.

Really??? I must have missed that game

When he bought him, we did so when he was a teenager, highly thought of based on youth tournaments.

We bought him and couldn't get him a visa. So we shipped him to Belgium where we had a relationship with a team. It took him 3 or 4 years to finally get himself back to England. By that point he was too far behind with his development.

It's tough to ship someone from a completely opposite culture who can't speak the language to your country then ship him to flipping Belgium for years. He wasn't the same after. Then getting dropped by United wrecked his confidence and thus he's floated around since.

Most forget we bought him so young.

The video in the OP is fecking shit. He's just bigger and more physical than the rest of the players.

fecking hell, it's a bit harsh to harass the youngsters and their skills, you'd think they'd prefer to encourage them. Any wonder they can't produce any good players.

Sunil Chhetri and he just signed for Sporting Lisbon. Will play on their "B" team though, in all likelihood.

vikash dhorasoo had a decent career.

Or do you mean indians from india?

I reckon someone of indian ethnicity will be a decent player in the next 10-20 years.

Now will it be an indian that grew up in india? not a chance.

I'm Sri Lankan, someone needs to sign me up. Ball playing CM wizard.

Far too simplistic an approach Cider.

Its simply that in India, its Cricket and then everything comes a lot later. Which is why we tend to produce quality cricketers all the time but struggle in other sports.

Its also about how less lucrative a career it is in the country which is why very few kids are encouraged to take up the sport. We have no history of success in the sport, no icons to look up to nationally and with the money in the sport being very less, its no surprise kids are discouraged from even thinking of making a career in the sport. The maximum most kids play football here would be an hour or 2 in the evening or some time in the school. Never enough to make yourself anywhere close to a top player.

Its a matter of time though, with the extensive coverage of the game here, the interest has definitely gone up. Its just about investment in the sport at the grass root levels and India could definitely have some good players in 2 generations or so. As in everything else, if the infrastructure and investment is made now, it'l take time before the impact is seen. There is no reason why a country cannot produce footballers if there is a system in place and the community is interested in the sport.

To put it simply though...

I'm not saying that Indians are physically incapable of playing football, I'm just saying that they're very shit at doing so.

According to the FIFA world rankings India are six times shitter than Ireland at football, and that's really saying something.

We are shit at it, no denying that :)

Just that there are various reasons which if taken care of will see us producing good players too.

Well that's what you implied. Considering the popularity of cricket in India, all other sports get very little funding and interest. Of course, you won't know or consider that before spouting BS like Indians "can't" play versus most "don't" play or get training or facilities. Try finding reasons or understanding issues before just talking smack cider.

I didn't imply that at all. I said they can't play football in the same sense that I might say Gary Neville can't shoot; obviously Gary Neville isn't physically incapable of shooting, but nevertheless, though he might have been better at shooting had he been trained to play as a striker, the simple fact of the matter is that he can't bloody well shoot.

Yeah. You shouldn't listen to Sky.
