Álvaro Carreras | Benfica

If we get him for 17 then it's worth it. We probably could have developed him here, but he's come on quick at Benfica and it means we can get a quality left back for net 11 million. That's a bargain if he's doing as well as suggested. We feckin' need a left back as well.

They haven’t done much developing in 3 and a half months. They were starting him almost immediately and he was impressing from the off.

If Ten Hag was a decent judge of talent, he’d have started 10 games for us already this season and we wouldn’t be saying it was worthwhile for us to pay Benfica €14m to take a player we needed on loan for 6 months.

Isn’t he more of a wing-back? Might get properly exposed. However I don’t know what system Benfica plays, but I had the impression Alvaro would struggle in a back four.

I don't think he played much last year on loan, they probably saw his quality and thought, let's keep him under wraps as United clearly haven't got a clue.

Like you say, as soon as the loan was made permanent for a bargain basement price of €6m they made him a fixture in their starting line up, he's played almost the same amount as he did the whole of last season already.

Except that's not true at all, he was barely in the team when he first went there. Partly because of Schmidt and then when he did play he wasn't pulling up any trees.

Benfica have played 9 games this season. He has started 7, played 70 minutes in one and came on for 20 minutes in the other.

Who in the world could possibly see that selling him for a Twix and a bag of Skittles was a terrible idea when we’ve had nothing but problems with the LB position for over 12 months

He was also there for 6 months last season

Which is relevant to my point that they have haven’t done much developing in the last 3 and a half months how?

We didn’t sell him to them last season. We sold him before this one.

They had a buy options. Nothing we could have done about that

You just have to laugh at our decision making at this point.

Benfica had a buy option on a United player? I sincerely doubt that’s true but it’s even worse if it is.
Not only is it true it's literally what facilitated the deal, the only caveat is we could have convinced him to stay but obviously chose not to.

It happens all the time.

In the same way that Sporting loaned Pedro Porro from City. They triggered the deal, bought him outright and he's now at Tottenham

Playing him in every game is developing him. Who knows what way he could have gone in our team in the PL. He's gotten great experience starting for a major team in a handy league. I'm not saying it's worth the 10m quid it would cost us to get him back or that we did a great job with his sale, but it's not nothing.

I wasn’t aware the original loan deal had an option to buy at €6m.

That’s shocking from the club to be honest. He was clearly a talent and regardless of how last years loan went, we’d have found a seller at a better price than that.

Probably not one that would have also given us a €20m buyback option though.

I think typically our loaning out choices fail to place the players at the right club to expose their ability and attract bids that warrant their value frustratingly, While a lot of us saw the potential he was sent to Granada where he would never be able to demonstrate his better qualities (Attacking) so it was pointless.

Selling him seemed bizarre from an INEOS perspective.

But I highly doubt Liverpool would be sniffing if that buyout clause is real. They’ve got a trio of superstars to replace soon…

Good we have a buy back.

No need for any drama.
Also although he's undoubtedly been good, I'd evaluate him after a bigger sample of playing time. And this comes from someone who actually came to redcafe after his superb CL performance against Atletico Madrid to ask why United let him go. No need to rush things with that buy back. Let him keep evolving and proving himself.

Absolutely. There’s no issues nor any rush.

If someone else wants to bid, and you are entertaining it, we can step in.

Supposedly it does expire in 2026, but that's still plenty of time to let him develop properly as you say.

There was a time, long ago, when we could take to the pitch with a left back in the team though. A wonderful, glorious time that now seems like a half-remembered dream, so I can sort of see why some are pining for Alvaro even after about 5 minutes.

It will undoubtedly get worse if/when Lindelof is back in the position this weekend!

People panicking over this one, IMO we acted just like we should have. Sold him for 6M and have a buy back clause for 17M, so we're basically paying 11M for Benfica to develop him if we want to bring him back. It's been only a few months so no need to rush any decision, let the kid play, let him develop and then we'll decide. At the end the day Benfica dont sell cheap so if any other club is interested they'll have to pay a big fee, if it comes to that then we'll decide whether we want to activate the buy back clause or not.

Seems a much better scenario to be in rather than loaning youngsters to teams who have no interest on developing them.

Selling him for 6months only to buy him back on 15M net, is a very on brand for United

Ten Hag chooses one academy player to promote in a season to fulfill his quota, and ignores the others. He would have never been given a chance here under ETH

This won't happen except in the minds of a few drama queens on here.

What a load of bollocks

I don't see him agreeing to return to United on a permanent basis if ETH is still the manager.

He left on loan three times under him, and these quotes from the player (I think they're from when he went to Granada in September 2023) are pretty telling:
“What message did United give me? That I should go out on loan, that Ten Hag didn’t count on me,” Fernandez detailed.

“I should continue to gain experience, rhythm, and we’ll see what happens in the future. But it’s clear that football doesn’t end at any club and that you have to keep working.

“My main objective is to return to United and make a place for myself there.”

If that won't be the case by then, that's a different scenario. However, I'm pretty sure we won't be the club he picks if ten Hag is still here when we want to buy him. But United already know this IMO.

So the club inserted a buy back clause in the deal that’s utterly pointless? Sounds reasonable.

They seem like pretty bog standard solid advice to young player quotes to me.

Does anyone actually still expect Ten Hag to be manager by the time the transfer window opens?

I heard somewhere that Ten Hag doesn't rate him, which going by Ten Hag's judgement of players is a f**king ringing endorsement as far as I'm concerned!

Yep, agree, it's another (e.g Antony) damning indictment of his lack of spotting talent.

This is ridiculous, selling him only to have immediate interest from other major clubs.
