People will do anything to disparage an opposition signing.
I hope you're not including me in this. I think he's a fantastic player, and a great signing for Arsenal. I just think the money could and should have been used in other areas. My Arsenal supporting Da thought so too. He was delighted with the signing, but wanted a striker and a centre half rather than an attacking midfielder.

No not you. More the people who were saying he's too slow and has no ticker etc.

Not bothered with not getting Ozil, not what we needed. Well done to Arse though, massive for them, and i'd prefer them to get a player that good than City or Chelsea.

We didn't need RVP either last window....

Not buying a guaranteed world class player available at 24 years of age because you have Kagawa who may or may not make it doesn't seem right to me.
We could have played Kagawa on left to accommodate a better player Ozil, after all thats what we did with Rooney. Not having enough money to go for Ozil and a CM makes more sense to me.

More to do with Rooney than Kagawa, I'd think.

While Ozil is a class act that I would have gladly welcomed at United, he's not going to turn Arsenal into title challengers. They are still a long way off IMO.

I don't think anyone would have given a feck if Ozil had gone to Bayern or Barca or PSG. We are just jealous of him joining a rival team. Ozil would have been a luxurious player for us and the secondary effects would have been less game time for Kagawa and Rooney. He would drastically improve our attacking options no doubt. but splashing 40M right now is not needed, specially considering the(speculation of) lack of funds available. He'll make sure arsenal get that 4th spot but we require strengthening in other positions. Arsenal would have paid him more wages than us if there was a bidding war. They seemed to want him more.

But, if we had already gotten Fellaini/Herrera and we were interested but still missed out on Ozil to arsenal then it would have made my blood boil.

Fair fecking play to arsenal for pulling this off. Players like him would improve any team.

The transfer baffles me slightly. The club didn't need him and he didn't need them.

He's in the top 10 players in the world, but he alone can't transform the club.

What happens in 3 years time when they've still won nowt? He'll be PSG bound in no time.

I personally am happy that he is in EPL now as I watch it more. Top 5 teams atleast on paper are really good now. These top 5 fixtures this year will be fascinating so personally I'm bit happy tbh. I like watching football first, would've been a shame if a talent like ozil was warming the bench. Will be very close this year. Only annoying thing is this international break.

Some people missing the point with this signing. Wenger has stated he will only spend on "super-quality" and by all accounts they have a lot of money to spend. Mesut Ozil befits this description and will significantly improve Arsenal in the final third of the pitch. They had a good defensive record last season and although Suarez would have been great for them, perhaps Wenger sees something in Giroud that makes him think he could grab a stack of goals this season. With Ozil behind him expect to see him get the chances anyway.

fecking hell, the arrogance on here can be bemusing at times...

Yes because you can predict the bloody future now? Pieces slowly fall into place. You cant buy everyone at once and transform the club in one summer.

It's the same old bizarre thing to see. A poster makes the argument that Wenger should sign world class players. Wenger then proceeds to sign a world class player. The same poster then says 'why would a world class player go to Arsenal of all places?' Weird.

And the argument that we don't 'need' Ozil was well debunked by JazzG earlier. To win things, you need an abundance of top quality.

It's a great signing. The only downside is that he didn't want to leave Madrid, and thus didn't really want to move to Arsenal. Which is a bit of an odd situation for such a top player to be in.

I'm sure he'll settle in well though.

I think people have a point that if you were going to bring in one world class player, number 10 isn't the area of your team that is the most lacking in talent. However, as you say, it's brilliant to be able to bring in genuine quality, he's a magnificent player who will not only be individually superb but will lift everyone and the signing also is the first indication in a while that Arsenal have the resources and the desire to buy the best players (which you will need to continue to do in coming windows) and therefore seriously challenge for trophies.

Fair enough.

I believe that Number 10 was up there in terms of necessity, but I agree, we also needed a couple of others at that level or close to it to compete. You're right though - this is just a start.

What could be Arsenal's formation with Ozil ? Who will make way ?

Giroud

Ozil-----Cazorla-----Walcott

Wilshere-----Arteta

Or maybe push Cazorla to the left wing like we do with Kagawa and play Ozil behind the striker.

Say it quietly, but it might make Wilshere have to work very hard for a spot.

Essentially, at the moment, it'll be:

Wilshere Ramsey

Walcott Ozil Cazorla

Which might transform to:

Arteta Ramsey

Walcott Ozil Cazorla

Cazorla played left-ish on Sunday with Rosicky, Wilshere and Ramsey in the middle. It gives them great options if they can have the likes of Ramsey/Wilshere, Podolski, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Rosicky in reserve.

If he didn't want to leave then why did he? Did Real push him out the door?

Wilshere Ramsey
Walcott Ozil Cazorla

2012/2013

Ozil - 16 goals/35 assists.
Walcott - 22 goals/16 assists.
Cazorla - 16 goals/14 assists.
Wilshere - 2 goals/4 assists.
Ramsey - 4 goals/2 assists.
Giroud - 20 goals/13 assists.
Arteta - 6 goals/5 assists.

Very very strong first XI. The forward three especially, and i think that Walcott will benefit hugely by having someone like Ozil next to him.

Pretty sure he wanted to leave and Real also felt he was surplus with Isco and Bale coming in. Both parties felt it was best.

The Real fans on the other hand...

Really is an amazing signing for Arsenal. It's just undeniably good when you brush all the bitterness and envy aside and look at it for what it is. I hope we don't regret not signing him.

He said he was sure he was staying at the weekend. The German sky sports guy reporting on the medical said Real had economic trouble, so most likely thats why they were they were fine with letting Ozil leave instead of Di Maria. They'd get more of the Bale money back from selling him

Think they have the best midfield in the league, if Giroud come through for them as a striker and they can keep a good organisation at the back, they will be challenging.

So we bid £34m for him apparently. It is really bad when Arsenal outbid us for a player.

The stadium investment and new commercial deals had to pay off at some time. Added to that they let go about 22 players this summer to free up the wage bill. Wenger is probably looking at revamping that wage structure as well that saw them pay unreliable and mediocre players like Denilson and Bendtner 60k/week and their top players not far from that. Eventually, if Arsenal's Emirates Stadium investment begins to pay off and they can now sign top players...all power to them.

Maybe not needed but you can't deny he would have added an extra dimension to your midfield. You didn't need RVP last summer and look how that turned out. Sometimes it may seem like you don't need a player until you see them in the squad. However, if he was really available to Utd and you didn't go for him because of 'need' then it's clearly bad judgment. You don't pass up signing top players (as long as you can afford it).

I think we had other (failed) targets and probably couldn't afford him on top of them. Simple.

I still think we haven't seen the best of Podolski in an Arsenal shirt. The guy has so much talent as a striker.
