Probably because Coleman is a better overall player. Valencia has been fairly solid these past 18 months, but his end product from attacking positions is an area of concern. It's not just him though, our left full-backs pose even less of a threat.

Coleman scores his fair share of goals, has a good delivery and similar levels of fitness. He works up and down tirelessly.

I'd probably prefer a 23-25 year old, but he is one of the best defenders in the league.

Have a look at who the top poster in this thread is, I'm a massive Coleman fan :D

I would have loved to have signed him a few years back but he will be 29 come the end of the year and would cost an absolute fortune. Valencia has been rock solid this season so I wouldn't really see the point in signing Coleman. We would be far better either signing a promising RB or blooding in a youngster to eventually take the RB spot.

Agree completely, he's easily one of the best RB's in the league.

if we competed for the title or in the champions league I would still consider buying him, no need to spend money now when we are good with valencia and rotating one of the palyers we do now, we can invest in youth more at this stage it's perfect time, because Tony V doesnt need to paly every game next year and his young backup can learn from around 15 games being his understudy..

I think if Sir Alex would have signed him as a youngster I think he could have given him the tools to become one of the best right backs in the world considering he should be in his prime years by now.

If I remember correctly he showed loads of potential as a youngster and I think he would have improved as a player having a better manager working on his defending during his younger years than David Moyes (he was decent with Everton at the time, but still not good enough to develop players to fulfil their potential), which we can see with the work Koeman has done with him this season.

I think he has been playing very well this season, but his lack of defense hinders him to reach Valencias standards.

Suffered a horrible-looking injury tonight. At 34 it could very well be career-ending.

It would be hard for a right back to come back to the highest level if it is indeed a bad knee injury.

All in all, probably one of the best value signings in the history of the PL. Over 400 top flight appearances for £60,000!

Why would it be particularly hard for a right back?

But yeah I’m not sure he has it in him to go through another long rehab. If Everton go down he might actually do it. Anyway his contract runs out in June.

Because it is very hard to adapt your game as a fullback. You need pace and you need running as a modern fullback. To recover from an injury like that and still be able to play that position would be the toughest I would presume.

There are a lot more 34+ CBs, CMs and CFs playing top level football than fullbacks, even without serious injuries to contend with.

Guess we'll know more about the injury later in the week but it's not looking good.

Yeah, very lucky indeed. Would’ve been cruel if his career ended that way, all players deserve to retire on their own terms.

True. And he's always professional on and off the pitch. It's just the way his leg bent after that collision, hopefully there's no other implication.

Might have got a bigger only for that Welsh cnut broke his leg. He probably wouldn't have wanted to leave Everton but he was definitely good enough to play for one of the bigger teams.

Quality player who would have fit into a SAF squad as first-off-the-bench full-back/starting-rotation option, and by all accounts a good character, competitive without being cntish...

Amazing signing for Everton. I'm a League of Ireland fan and can confidently say we will never see anything like his transfer again.
