I posted this in the CL Draw Thread after being ask to give a bit of insight into Young Boys, so will post it in here too for those who're interested.

In general it's an interesting club. It starts with the hilarious fact for english people that the club really is called Young Boys and on top of that their Stadium is called "Wankdorf". This was already mocked in 2018 in here and I'm sure will be the case this year as well

The club is based in the capital city of Switzerland and has a huge fanbase with a whole region behind it. Nevertheless, they didn't win anything for over 30 years before 2017/2018 and got mocked in the whole country for squandering chance after chance to do so in a sometimes hilarious way.
But with winning the Swiss "Super League" (yes it really is called like this) they finally won the first title after over 30 years in 2017/2018 and never looked back. With very good squad and financial management and clever transfers they've won every title since then.

They also played very good football under former manager Gerardo Seoano, who moved to Bayer Leverkusen this summer. It was high press, high intensity football with a lot of chances created and a lot of goals scored. I haven't seen enough of them since the start of the current season, but the choore of the team remains the same and with David Wagner (ex Huddersfield & Schalke) they have an experienced manager in charge now. From what I have seen, they play a bit more conservativ, posession based style under him so far, but as I said, haven't seen enough yet to have a definite opinion.

As for the players, it's a good mix between homegrown and foreign players. They have three players who got a call-up for the swiss-national team for the current break in Fassnacht, Aebischer and Zesiger. They have a fair few good, rapid foreign forwards/wingers in Jordan Siebatcheu (plays for the US national team), Meschak Elia (plays for Kongo) or Nicolas Ngamaleu (plays for cameroon). Their topscorer of the last two seasons Jean-Pierre Nsame (also cameroon) is currently injured. I'm not sure if he will be fit for any of these games as he torn his achilles tendon in May. But even withouth him, these forwards are certainly good enough to make the difference in Switzerland. And they have the quality to be dangerous in this group as well.

If we get our shit together, we will beat them comfortably in both games. But if we don't, we could be in for a surprise. I also wouldn't be surprised if they give a good fight to Atalanta and Villareal and even get something out of this games, especially in the home games. (The atmosphere in a packed Wankdorf can be electric.) But all in all, I think they will be too fragile defensively for the quality in this group and will go out bottom of the group. I will certainly root for them when they play Villareal and Atalanta though.
    Thanks, good post

I don't want us to try and be too clever here.

I'd be okay with us swapping out a couple of players but we can't be playing a 2nd string and ending up with a draw for our first game. There's plenty of time to rotate when we know we've qualified.

I have a little Juan Mata feeling about this. Seems like a game that would suit him, but maybe we have too many players who deserve to play instead. It would be good if Cavani is back too, get him going.

We actually dont play until Sunday, even though its a Tuesday early game.

Maybe this is down to West Ham in eruopa. In any case there should be enough rest for our players.

If after last year ya'll dont think Ole will play a strong side, you're deluded. This will probably be a very similar line up as yesterday.
West Ham next fixture, need to rotate wisely as we can’t afford to put in a performance like Istanbul last season. That effectively did us.

Lingard and Martial could start. Donny to start and Bruno to come on.

They will be missing Antonio. That’s a huge miss

Lingard must start, and VDB.Rotate everyone.

    Heaton
    Axel Lindelof Bailly Dalot
    Fred VDB
    Mata Lingard Amad
    Cavani
Your knowledge of who is actually at the club and currently injured wouldn’t be the strongest.

I hope we make 2-3 changes as players like VdB, Dalot, Martial need games to build up their match sharpness to ensure they are better prepared when called upon. It's a long season and we have a big squad.

I’d make a couple of changes but nothing wholesale. We cant afford to get off to a bad start.

    De Gea
    Dalot - Varane - Maguire - Shaw
    Donny - Fred
    Greenwood - Bruno - Martial
    Ronaldo

I want to see something like this:

    DDG
    Dalot Varane Maguire Shaw
    Pogba Fred
    Greenwood Fernandes Lingard
    Cavani

We must use our squad but at the same time it is important for us to respect our opponents. I’ve gone for 4 changes, Dalot, Lingard and Cavani need starts, while Matic won’t play 2 games in a week. I think we still get 5 changes so definitely could see Ronaldo, Martial, DVB and maybe McTominay coming off the bench.

Going for 2-0 win with Cavani grabbing a goal.

Cavani instead of Ronaldo I think at least. Cavani up top should be more than enough against them

We went out in the group last year because we shat the bed against the worst team there. Need to make sure that doesn’t happen again - besides most of our players could use the minutes anyway. No reason not to pick a strong team and get 3 points on the board early.

would love to see a different team

    hendo
    dalot lindelof bailly telles
    fred Vdb
    sancho lingard martial
    cavani

    let's go

Some of you lot are forgetting how drained some of our players were in the later stages of last season. Let's saviour some of those legs whenever possible already.

433/4231: Heaton, Dalot, Lindelöf, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, Matić, van de Beek; Lingard, Ronaldo, Martial.

Enough stability to get us them 3 points. Greenwood and especially Fernandes are spared some minutes that'll come crucial at the end of the season. Cavani in for Ronaldo, Telles for Shaw after 45.

I get your point but sometimes too much rotation is damaging. I’d absolutely make some changes but this is too much.

Lindelöf, Maguire, Shaw, Fred and Matić have been just about the core of this team for good bit now. Lingard, Ronaldo and Martial isn't a B team lineup at all. I'd consider that strong enough.

I'd go for Henderson instead of Heaton if he's fit and well enough. But he hasn't played in forever? Played one game for our u23? Heaton did well enough in our preseason.

I take your point, but I wouldn’t want things to get disjointed. I’d start a little strong and bring some of these guys on.

Are we still allowed 5 subs in Europe?

    Henderson

    Dalot
    Varane
    Maguire
    Shaw

    Fred
    VDB
    Bruno

    Lingard/Martial
    Cavani
    Ronaldo

I'd give the players who need minutes, minutes with a mix of first eleveners. Ronaldo is a CL specialist so he can get another goal or two.

Looks good to me. Maybe they could decide to give Sancho a chance to grab some form, but I'd definitely look at a change at the back and a few in the front six.

We know utilising the squad isn't Ole's strong point so it'll probably be the same eleven.

There's not many games where you can rest the likes of Bruno so we absolutely should. We have the squad to do so now, fixing the prior excuse.

I'd rest Shaw, Bruno, Ronaldo, Maguire. Dalot, VDB, Lindelof, Cavani to come in.

Think it's unlikely Ole rests 4 players, it'll probably be more like 1-2 changes, with Fred replacing Matić.

    I'd like something like this:

    De Gea
    AWB-Varane-Maguire-Shaw
    Fred-vdB
    Sancho-Bruno-Pogba/Martial
    Ronaldo

Sancho getting chance at RW while Greenwood gets some rest (and comes on in 2nd half if needed). Donny finally starting a game, Ronaldo to start but get subbed off after 60-65 minutes to rest for West Ham. Think Telles is still not ready so Shaw again at LB, while I'd consider even maybe starting Dalot.

We have so many options in attacking positions, basically enough depth + quality to play in 4 competitions.

It’s the first CL game of the tournament and it’s away. There won’t be substantial changes. Matic will come out, and Martial/Lingard might start ahead of Sancho on the left.

Beyond that… don’t see any real changes. Lindelof is great deputy but I think Ole will want to get the Maguire and Varane partnership as many games as they can with continuity.

    Jesus Christ

So, a few points that will probably reflect the strong team selection from this game (so everyone can hopefully stop advocating mostly reserve line-ups):

    1. We play on Tuesday, West Ham (whom we play on Sunday) play on Thursday in the Europa League. No reason to rest many.
    2. It's an Away game in the Champion's League. Let's not forget that last season, we lost away to the group whipping boys and it cost us progression. It's pivotal we get 6 Points from the two games against Young Boys, as the other games will likely be much tighter.
    3. Momentum and fitness. We need to keep that feel-good factor now as the game against West Ham at the weekend will still be tricky.
    4. We can make FIVE SUBSTITUTIONS in this game. Half of the outfield players can be swapped. If we can get a two or three goal lead, sub off the important players for the weekend (Ronaldo, Bruno, Pogba, maybe Shaw and/or Wan-Bissaka etc).

    DDG
    Dalot Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    Fred VDB
    Sancho Lingard Martial
    Cavani

Pretty incredible that we can field this lineup and call it second string. 3-0 United.

It’ll be a full strength side. Probably the same team that started yesterday, with Fred coming back in for Matic.

    Bang on all this.

A great team to get us knocked out of the group stage again in embarrassing fashion.

Needs to go near full strength, perhaps with Donny and Dalot coming into the side. Otherwise pretty much the same team.

I don't get the rotate stuff. Need to be going there with the 3 points in mind. The rest will come in the league cup game against West Ham.

    2 days off
Young Boys (they really need to give thought to a new name)
    4 days off
    West Ham
5 days off (2nd team line up against West Ham for the league cup)
    Aston Villa
    3 days off
    Villarreal
    3 days off
    Everton

That's 17 days off over the next 5 matches no need to rotate fully in any of the non-league cup fixtures.

Can't see Ronaldo being rested. He's obsessed with the CL and his scoring record.

In fairness - that was a much tougher draw, we should still qualify even if we lose to Young Boys

We should rotate - but maybe only 4-5 players - we wont be really weakened if we play Lindelof, Fred, v.d Beek, Cavani for instance
