Not too many changes, important we win this. I hope Cavani and VDB get some minutes.

Will be interesting to see how we use Ronaldo in the CL Group Stage

I'm sure Ronaldo will want to play and chase records, but surely saving him for the PL would be the sensible choice?

Sancho, Ronaldo and Van de Beek should both start this. VdB played well in Europe last season, and it’s a good opportunity for Sancho to bond with the team playing against non PL opposition. Ronali should start because this is his competition.

Might be too much for Ronaldo to start going double fixtures every week. At least against such a low tier opponent where ww should 100% be good without him. VdB will hopefully start, and Fred in for Matic

I posted this in the CL Draw Thread after being ask to give a bit of insight into Young Boys, so will post it in here too for those who're interested.

In general it's an interesting club. It starts with the hilarious fact for english people that the club really is called Young Boys and on top of that their Stadium is called "Wankdorf". This was already mocked in 2018 in here and I'm sure will be the case this year as well

The club is based in the capital city of Switzerland and has a huge fanbase with a whole region behind it. Nevertheless, they didn't win anything for over 30 years before 2017/2018 and got mocked in the whole country for squandering chance after chance to do so in a sometimes hilarious way.
But with winning the Swiss "Super League" (yes it really is called like this) they finally won the first title after over 30 years in 2017/2018 and never looked back. With very good squad and financial management and clever transfers they've won every title since then.

They also played very good football under former manager Gerardo Seoano, who moved to Bayer Leverkusen this summer. It was high press, high intensity football with a lot of chances created and a lot of goals scored. I haven't seen enough of them since the start of the current season, but the choore of the team remains the same and with David Wagner (ex Huddersfield & Schalke) they have an experienced manager in charge now. From what I have seen, they play a bit more conservativ, posession based style under him so far, but as I said, haven't seen enough yet to have a definite opinion.

As for the players, it's a good mix between homegrown and foreign players. They have three players who got a call-up for the swiss-national team for the current break in Fassnacht, Aebischer and Zesiger. They have a fair few good, rapid foreign forwards/wingers in Jordan Siebatcheu (plays for the US national team), Meschak Elia (plays for Kongo) or Nicolas Ngamaleu (plays for cameroon). Their topscorer of the last two seasons Jean-Pierre Nsame (also cameroon) is currently injured. I'm not sure if he will be fit for any of these games as he torn his achilles tendon in May. But even withouth him, these forwards are certainly good enough to make the difference in Switzerland. And they have the quality to be dangerous in this group as well.

If we get our shit together, we will beat them comfortably in both games. But if we don't, we could be in for a surprise. I also wouldn't be surprised if they give a good fight to Atalanta and Villareal and even get something out of this games, especially in the home games. (The atmosphere in a packed Wankdorf can be electric.) But all in all, I think they will be too fragile defensively for the quality in this group and will go out bottom of the group. I will certainly root for them when they play Villareal and Atalanta though.

    What’s the latest on Cavani?

If Ronaldo wants to play then let him, but agree it’s only for an hour. His games/season needs to be managed.

Not too many changes but would like to see some rotation just to keep everyone fresh and fit. Important that we fully utilise this squad and don’t risk players being tired and burnt out.

    Starting XI

    De Gea

    Dalot - Varane - Lindelof - Shaw

    Van De Beek - Pogba

    Greenwood - Fernandes - Sancho

    Ronaldo

Subs: Heaton, Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Matic, Fred, Mata, Lingard, Elanga, Martial

Score Prediction: Young Boys 0-3 Manchester United

I would say same team again apart from Matic maybe for Fred or Mct. We need to gel a bit more. The more games the better this early in the season

Ridiculous team name really, Young Boys?
Yes, and why English. A Swiss team with an English name. Why. Imagine Real Madrid instead was named "Pet Lovers" or Arsenal "Der Untergang".

I don’t see much rotation for this game, he will give players who need game time the league cup game the following week

I do think we will see Fred and McT if fit

Don’t see this being an easy game and will be delighted with 1-0

Surprised to see plenty going for Dalot instead of AWB.

Wan-Bissaka is one of our few non-internationals so had a free summer and has just had an early 2 week break during international week. He'll likely also get another 2 week break during next months international week, and will probably be rested v West Ham in the League Cup.

I don't think he needs to be rested v Young Boys as well, especially as we'd be weakening our team unnecessarily in a position where there's such a drop off from first choice to understudy.

Young Boys of Berne are no mugs. Especially at their ground. It's a game we have to take serious as we can't afford to drop unnecessary points in it. Any rotational changes should only include bringing in equally regular players we'd happily start in a PL game above those they replace - so the rarely featuring Heaton, Dalot, Bailly, Mata, Elanga, etc, shouldn't be getting a rare start in the game.

Dear God, can't beat that CL anthem. Really brings back the memories of our past achievements in the tournament and also makes you dream of future glory especially now that we're participating with the best team we've had in a decade.

Lingard must start, and VDB.Rotate everyone.

    Heaton
    Axel Lindelof Bailly Dalot
    Fred VDB
    Mata Lingard Amad
    Cavani

You cannot be serious, it's our first CL game, not a Carabao away tie at Harrogate Town.

Because who gives a shit about the Champions League anyway?

    De Gea;
    Wan Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Dalot
    Fred VDB
    Greenwood Lingard Sancho
    Ronaldo

Young Boys playing in Wankdorf stadium always seemed like something out of GTA.

I presume that's a joke. But, even so, you could have at least picked 11 players that were fit (Amad) and currently at the club and available for selection (Axel).

Young Boys again after 3 years. We won last time there pretty comfortably, remember Pogba was MotM. Hopefully we can rest few players and get 3 points.

Start with strongest team, no point in monkeying around.

    DDG

    AWB
    Maguire
    Varane
    Shaw

    Fred
    Pogba
    Bruno

    Sancho
    Greenwood
    Ronaldo

Rest a few of them if we lead comfortably by 60 mins

Some never learn. We wouldn't have had to play in the Europa League last season if we would have beaten Basaksehir away from home. Let's rest and rotate once we have earned it.

You don't want to mess around in the first few group games because the last few will come in when you will begin to have fixture congestion with the league cup as well. And our main players need some more match fitness and time to gel together. This is that opportunity. Obviously, plan to sub them out if you are cruising at the 70 minute mark.

edit : Especially because later you might have to focus on the league. and keeping players fresh through december.

The inappropriate vibe from some of the posts on this thread summarised well here:

International schedules have been tough, I would rest some players here and take off Ronaldo if possible early.

3 of Cavani, Pogba, Bruno, Greenwood, Rashford to come on if needed.

It's important to get a great start in our group, even if our group is "easy".
That having been said, I do believe our squad is good enough to do a few rotations.

Sancho needs to start this game. He showed clear improvement in the match against Newcastle but a confidence boost would do wonders for him.
Young Boys will give us more space and time on the ball which is perfect for Sancho.

I think this is also a good match to give DVB a chance from the start. Give Bruno a rest.

I would also give Lindelöf a chance here. Simply because the pressure should be lower and this would give Varane and Lindelöf a chance to built up a partnership. Btw Maguire should obviously be our main partner with Varane, but in case of injuries or bookings it's important that the main sub can slot in as effortlessly as possible.

Let Ronaldo start and hopefully get a quick goal and then let Cavani play the second half.

    De Gea
    Dalot - Varane - Lindelöf - Shaw
    Pogba - Fred
    Greenwood - DvB - Sancho
    Ronaldo

I'm expecting a very similar XI tbh. Probably Fred for Matic and leave it at that. Maybe Lingard over Sancho or Greenwood.

Jordan Siebatcheu was a beast for me in FM back when I use to play it. so cool to now actually see him in a real game against us.

We should just rest Matic and give Donny some game time, but fully expecting Fred to start in place of Matic. Bruno came off clearly to give him a short rest for this match.
Don't see much changes happening. Ronnie most definitely will play.

De Gea, Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Shaw, Pogba, Fred, Greenwood, Bruno, Sancho, Ronaldo.

Don't think there will be more than 2-3 changes.
Here's hoping that the game will be done and dusted in the first half.
5 subs, so hope to see Elanga at some point.

Play our best team and then get players on if we give them a good hiding. No point risking it and we got a brilliant group to realistacally get top.

Oh feck, just saw the kick off time and it clashes with a schools parents evening.... Darn it, I am going to get detention for using my phone during that, unless I can wriggle out of it somehow.
First part, I'm like, what can you do as a parent but attend it...then I heard detention and realized you the kid.
What Samid said though, fastest way out of it. :wenger:

They've been in good form as well, and also played yesterday so turn around time will be something they have to deal with as well.
