My guess is that Carrick won't employ VdB like Ole did with Bruno as a second forward, and more as a deeper player to link up with McFred; you know........an actual no.10, for real!

Bruno hasn't been one of our better players recently, and neither Martial or Mctominay play in his position, so their selection is irrelevant.

Dalot was obliterated last time against Villarreal and there aren't any real midfield/defensive alternatives for the other positions with Matic playing 90 mins against Watford and Varane being injured.

It wouldn't surprise me if Donny plays quite deep alongside McTominay with Fred between them and the defence. Fergie used to love a packed midfield away from home in Europe.
In a dysfunctional system. Those two fit more into this one than Bruno does.Dropping Bruno, playing Martial with Sancho on the wings with Donny right under Cristiano means playing proper technical football. Quick short passing with lots of dribbling, which ideally should help Telles and AWB to be more involved in our attacks. Carrick may surprise us positively, it seems.

DDGI wish he would have changed more. Drop AWB and Maguire too. I like the changes. Bruno has been awful and I would argue this is the best midfield at your disposal (never expected Matic to play back to back games with 2 days rest) to try and control the game.Good lineup.

In case you didn't notice, we don't have a lot of options in centre mid. I doubt he's ready for a midfield of Fred and Donny away in Europe again. Left wing is a toss-up given nobody has played well there this season. I probably would have kept Bruno in too but he can be quite loose and at least you can see that Carrick has picked players that fit a system rather than trying to fit a system around our best players.

Yes - looks that way.There's a lot of technical ability in that Martial-VDB-Sancho trio. Hopefully Fred can supply them the ball nice and early. I'm worried that Scott will struggle to keep up though, and that will then have a knock-on effect through the entire team.
Bruno needs a rest. He is playing almost every game since last season for us and his national team. And he keeps running in all the games too. It wont be long before we see Fatigue having a long-term affect on his performance. We have Chelsea over the weekend and like 11 Games over 40 days, so it is important to keep everyone fresh. We are already without Pogba and if we lose Bruno too, then its bye-bye to salvage our season. I think the plan is bring him in the last 20-30 mins if we need him and I think he will make good impact then.
We dont have much options in the midfield now, McFred and VDB is not a bad option. May be Matic would be better for McTominnay but I think it is still decent.
On second thoughts, you're right. Just the sight of them in the starting XI made me a bit frustrated.
I know that Matic is not capable of playing 90 minutes twice in three days, and that Varane and Pogba are injured. But if missing just those players make us have to line up like this, our squad is far from good enough.
