It’s been a bad week for United, the two draws particularly the one against West Brom have dented United’s challenge for the top four. It was going to be a hard ask given the run-in and it’s even harder now because we have to make up those two points lost against the harder sides in our run-in. If you United were to slip in this match against Sunderland then it would surely kill off our Premier League season realistically. The nature of the performances were also disappointing in those games, after the International break I expected United to be revitalised, but the performance levels were down in both games, but a win can do wonders and Sunderland should be straight forward. They are pretty much relegated, this might give them a sense a freedom in their minds to play proactively against us, they performed well for the first half against City recently, but United should be able to whittle away any last shred of confidence they have by taking control of the game with a goal and dominance with ball possession. I fully expect a United win and increase in their performance levels in this match.
Moyes is fundamentally a cautious manager who will be determined not to lose against us here, it's difficult to work out precisely how he will format his defence, and it's also uncertain whether he'll play a three-man defence or a back four. Whatever shape they play Sunderland’s defence has been leaky, and the man to fear for United could be Jordan Pickford. Opposition goalkeepers have had a habit of performing very well against United this season and this fine young shot stopper has been super for Sunderland all season. Let’s hope he doesn’t have one of those days against us here! The full-backs/wing-backs Sunderland have are good going forward but not the most reliable in a defensive sense so the centre-backs can be exposed when they push forward. Ibrahimovic is not the man to expose this, although he can make well-timed runs in-behind he likes to drop deep, link play before charging into the box to finish off moves. United will need pace going in-behind at turnovers so they can cause Sunderland problems in this area so Rashford and Lingard make perfect sense in the wide positions to try and expose this. When Sunderland are defending organised, Ibrahimovic will be crucial, he is a creator, as well as a penalty box presence United don’t have an obvious candidate for linking play both Rashford and Martial tend to run in behind rather than playing a hold-up role, while Rooney has struggled in this area for a few seasons now. United will look to him to provide combinations with the other attackers or maybe get on the end of the some ball in from the flanks.
Whoever Moyes plays in midfield I expect Sunderland to form a solid midfield trio in that zone, which will allow their attack-minded full-backs to push forward. They may press United heavily, but I don’t expect that to last. The big question from United’s standpoint is how do they format their midfield zone? Mourinho has switched between 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 this season. It’s basically do we use Carrick deep or play with a number 10? I don’t see a huge need to fill the midfield in this game so I would opt with Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the number 10 role attempting to work with Ibrhaimovic’s link play. Carrick could be used later on the game to control things and may be a better opition in the Europa League game on Thursday night. Pogba and Herrera shouldn’t have too many problems in deeper midfield against a team that lacks the ability to find space between the lies.
With Januzaj unavailable Sunderland lack creativity in attack. They will be based around pace and intensity with Jermain Defoe is likely to lead the line solo for long periods. United should cope with him as they have plenty of aggression and mobility with Rojo and Bailly at the back. It’s hard to see Sunderland scoring. The main question in the United defence is who will start at left-back? This week could be a turning point in Luke Shaws career at United under Mourinho and hopefully he is selected to play because he clearly is United’s best left-back option.
