Well I’m seemingly the only one but I like the look of this line up. Matic and VDB are press resistant and Fred not being the 6 frees him up to hunt for the ball. Bruno will have a free role at the tip of the diamond and if it turns out Rashford and Greenwood isn’t working upfront it’s an easy change to bring on Cavani for a midfielder and those two move wider.
Very rare you get people happy with the team before the game starts.
Go onto Martial thread and you’ll see he’s not great lately , he’s missing today and you’ve people saying we play poor when he doesn’t play :wenger:

I'm interested to see how Fred, Bruno and VDB play together in midfield. It's a very similar lineup to the Istanbul game. I do think Ole is guilty of just doing whatever worked the last time rather than really creating his own style, but happy to give it a go.

Where do you get that from?

Glenn Hoddle: "Only way for VDB to get into the team consistently is to hit the manager between the eyes."

    So, assassination?

Would have replaced Fred with Cavani, and played 433 (with Bruno and Donny box to box), but this'll do. As long as the full backs have been told they're allowed past the half way line this time.

Looking back at our games against Southampton in the last 10 years, for some reason we struggled more against them at home than we did away. Even when we won against them, they were the better team.

3 defenders on the bench! I do not see a need for that. It diminishes our ability to change the game, if it is necessary.
It's not like we had a choice. These are the players who travelled. An attacker is out and the only other option was a defender to be on the bench.

If we are playing a 4231 today, then I'm hoping to see Vdb on the left. With Telles' ability to go forward, it will allow VdB to drift into the half-spaces, thus creating a box in midfield with Bruno, Fred, and Matic. By doing this, it will allow us to have more control of the game, whilst still getting width from Telles and Greenwood/Rashford.

That being said, we need to match their energy first and foremost. Start quick. Put them on the back foot and hopefully get an early goal.

Need to move the ball quickly and avoid their press, can’t start this one slowly, hope Ole is driving this point home.

I’m hoping VDB helps to provide a constant passing option with some movement in the middle.

Apart from McTominay and Martial missing, that's pretty much our best XI.

Logic says draw, but Ole is a stubborn man. Like a shit that won't flush. So 2-1 United.

I wasn't worried until I read this post

I am not because I was of the opinion that we should start with a diamond this match. It is actually a sensible decision considering the options.

    But who knows :wenger:

I thought this was at Old Trafford, think we can get a win but Southampton are the in form team atm. Would really like a win though...

I guess Matic is there to give some solidity in case it goes horribly wrong.
It all stems from the lack of a top level DM in this team, he’s got to play what worked last time to some extent because of this.

It’s the only real conundrum he has with this starting 11 when trying to field a balanced team, which is why I hope we address it ASAP.

Think Bruno, Rashford and Greenwood will make up a front 3, but not really sure in exactly what positions.

I would like to see Bruno on the inside left, Rashford up top and Greenwood on the right as we often see Bruno pull out to the left anyway, so shouldn't be too out of his comfort zone.

Hoping Greenwood and Rashford can get some opportunities with their pace in behind. This should be a good game.

    Flying without Ings

How long has he waited to crowbar that one in?

I think Bruno will have a free role today to link in with attack and sometimes drop into midfield

Baffling line-up. Who are the attacking wide players? Two defensive midfielders, still!
