Mata has pleasantly surprised me by not being a complete disappointment. Still, he could move the ball faster when James and Rashford are on the run. Clearly prefers the in and around the box stuff to just getting the counters going.

Andreas doesn'td to come out for the second half. Just not doing anything, defensively or offensively.

Rashford is not having the best of games. It's not sticking to him and he's not getting shots off.

Pogba needs to try less cute stuff and move the ball on faster. It's great that he has skills but a centre midfielder should model their game on Scholes or Pirlo or Xavi. Sometimes it is better just to hit it into space for a runner. It doesn't have to be a drag back first.

PS) Thank God Giggs recommended us James!

They want to come at us, and they're leaving space behind. We will get at least one more goal on the counter.

I like Mata's ball retention under pressure, today. A much better no 10 than Lingard in these circumstances. James has also been very impressive, and not just with the goal.

Pogba is taking too many risks in our own half, but apart from that we've been good. Expect us to kick on in the second half.

We can't build up from back, stop trying. James fantastic, Mata good. Rashford, SMT, Pogba, Pereira all very poor. Midfield is non existent.

Also considering I've been moaning of Mata's lack of pace/mobility Rio's just shown what a good run he makes for James for the goal. Top effort Juan.

James, Mata and the back 4 have been good.

If Pogs and Rashford turn up after half time we'll win comfortably

    Couldn't agree more.

Pogba and Rashford have not been good but I don't mind what they have been doing. They have been trying but things not coming off. Rashford in particular is that kind of player. But what I love about him is he never stops trying even if he is not on song.

Pogba needs to get his shit together. That play in the last 5-10 mins was pathetic. Rashford needs to step up ask well.

Bring on someone for Periera, he's done nothing of note, and keeps losing the ball.

Fantastic goal from James, he's been the best player on the pitch so far. Long may it continue.

Southampton don't look as good as last season. Hopefully Greenwood and Chongy gets some time.

Pogba has to man up. Atleast do the basics right. Ole needs to play pogba in a more advanced role. Rashford has taken Lingard's role of being crap. I still don't know what periera offers. Average player who should be a bench player.

Ball-watching and miss passes are the 2 big diseases this team suffers from, and until the coaching team finds a cure for them, the results and performances will remain inconsistent.

Rashford is useless as a 9. He's either been invisible or trying to hero-solo an attack. I've counted about 3 times he's got the ball, dragged two defenders in leaving james clear and he either turns it over or shoots into the defenders.

I'd sub Pereira, no communication with Wan Bissaka. Bring on Greenwood.

Best players on the pitch for me were James and Mata.

What is Mata's supposedly fatal flaw? I see his speed get mentioned a lot, but is that really it? I feel that there's enough pace in the rest of the squad to compensate for that. We need more intelligent footballers within the starting 11.

We've played well for the most part. Better than i expected. Positives are, the defence looks rock-solid apart from Young. Southampton are targeting him a lot.

But the amount of unforced errors from our main players is extremely concerning. Rashford has wasted quite a few big chances this half which i hope we don't come to rue at the end of the match.

Why isn't Gomes in the squad? Is it a carrot and stick treatment over signing a new deal or what?

Done ok. Need another goal to give us a bit of a breathing space. Dan James has been excellent and took his goal really well. Superb strike! Need to do much better when we are on the ball. Giving it away far too cheaply. One of those lapses of concentration is going to punish us if we don’t improve.

Look much better with Mata playing

He lacks the pace for the counter but gives us much more composure through the middle which we need.

Anyone here who disses Mata does not understand football. He has been super

Yup. Has been fantastic. releasing the passes at the right moment. Apart from a couple of passes, his decision making has been perfect as well

    - Take Pereira off for Greenwood
    - Rashford has been poor yet again
    - Young and Mata were really good
    - Pogba played like his mind was elsewhere
    - James looked really promising, put some of the so called senior players to shame

James has really been the only bright spark in the front 6 in all honesty

    big improvement required

Pogba is playing like crap. He's given away possession so cheaply so many times. Pereira and Mata cannot start together. That's a fact. And Pereira offers nothing on the right side. Pereira should be playing in the No. 10 role. Rashford has not been able to hold the ball up. All Rashford offers is waiting on the last defender and running into space but is not a No. 9 and we missed Martial today. I fail to understand where's Rashford's best position. I don't think he should be a starter. He's at best an impact player from the bench. Once again, our right side offered nothing. AWB crossed the ball couple times but nothing fruitful.

Someone like Rodri would have been great.
Yep. I wonder if anyone is available in January. They don't have to be fancy, just fecking solid. It was a big mistake not getting someone for this role.

James and Wan-Bisaka have been brilliant. MacTominay, Mata, Lindelof, Maguire, and Young have been solid. DeGea has been steady. Pogba and Periera have been sloppy.

Rashford holds on long after he should have bailed out. This is a mental thing Ole has to coach out of him. It's frustrating for everyone. He's drawing multiple defenders when he dribbles in - someone is open.

I can’t remeber the last time we gave the ball away this easily and so frequently in our own half. Thank feck that Southampton are terrible offensively.

Pogba last season away to Southampton was probably the absolute worst he's ever played for Utd.

He's trying hard so far to be just as bad.

Pogba not playing further upfield isn't an excuse for him giving the ball away so sloppily.
He doesn't need another change of position, he just needs to play better in the second half.
    Rashford pretty poor too.
Happy with everyone else really, hope we kick on and get more in the second half.
