Show me the rule you are referring to.
It's not explicitly mentioned but here are what are considered as causes for free kick
    Direct free kick
A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
    • charges
    • jumps at
    • kicks or attempts to kick
    • pushes
    • strikes or attempts to strike (including head-butt)
    • tackles or challenges
    • trips or attempts to trip
If an offence involves contact it is penalised by a direct free kick or penalty kick.

    • Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed
    • Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned
    • Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off
A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences:
    • handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within their penalty area)
    • holds an opponent
    • impedes an opponent with contact
    • spits at an opponent

The rest of it is open to interpretation, meaning that if a player, during a tackle, if a player touches the ball first, it's left to the ref's appreciatin to judge the tackle. There isn't a single mention of "touching the ball" first during tackles in any of the rules. It's something we've been accustomed to by listening to pundits and commentators.

    Agree.

This forums completely stone cold mental.

Fergusons sides used to do the EXACT SAME THING. That's what really won us titles. Nobody remembers the 1-0 wins we ground out at West Ham etc
They all think all SAF games were sublime football. Well my first ever games was an atrocious 0-0 draw at OT against QPR and that was with so called gods playing.

Honestly why do some people on here even support United? All they do is whinge after every game. Yes we didn't play scintillating football today, but we are joint top of the league. Do you think Fergie had the team playing amazing football all the time, no he did not. Sometimes you have do work hard and grind out a 1-0 win.
I am making a list. All whingers go on ignore. They can whinge to each other.

SAF had to have games where we score a lot too.You need to score 85 goals in a season to be on the top since 2007/2008. That's 2.2 goals / game minimum.

I'm happy. But me and the others moaning/concerned are not bothered about thrashing teams every week, it's maintaining control of the game, and we had precisely zero control for pretty much the entire 2nd half.

We were playing like a Sunderland team defending a goal lead against Barcelona.

It's worrying the whole midfield seems to hinge on Pogba.
Of course Pogba plays a big part. But Southampton (especially at home) or no mugs. We had control of the first half but they started the second half strongly so we had to change to a more pragmatic style of play. You can't control every game, Pogba or no Pogba. We kept them relatively controlled defensively, and most of their shots were from range, though of course they had a few set pieces where things were dangerous.

Southampton away is exactly one of those games where it's a big win whenever any of the big teams wins away, no matter what type of performance it is. Wouldn't be surprised if the likes of City/Chelsea drop points here whenever they play.

So like... basically how we've done so far? Stoke and Southampton away were the 2 games we've grinded out so far, and we got 4 points from those 2. I'll take that.

Chelsea and City play each other next weekend, something has to give. We play Palace without a TFM, so we could get a few goals then. Also we play at 3 o'clock, so can pile a bit of pressure on them.

Clean sheet on the road. Hardly a vulnerability if we don't win 4-0 every week.

It's not about the scoreline , but how we had to go on defensive as midfeild got dominated because of lack of mobility and stamina and also the team could not hold the ball and create because all we kept doing is thumping the ball and running into traffic in possession.

This shows we will have problems against city's and Liverpools Chelsea s of this league and go reactive when played fast tempo against us.

Ok so which of those did he do? I'm genuinely curious. Not reckless, got the ball, minimal force. It clearly wasn't a foul as you well know and the commentator just called it incorrectly. You're just trying to be a smart arse for some unknown reason.

Yep. Palace is the worst team in the league by a distance. City winning 5-0 there... is whatever, not really a surprise as I expect every team who plays Palace (especially at home) to absolutely hammer them. Southampton away? Surprise whenever someone wins that.

Nice to see us winning such a game. Southampton was really good in the second half but we had a plan b and it worked well. In fact herrera could/should have scored and put the game to bed. top game management

We will be found out this season. I can't see us being a contender against the likes of Chelsea and City.
We are on level points with City, just behind on goal difference, they played a defensively bereft side who leaks goals left, right and centre. Chelsea are behind us, on a lesser goal difference, which would be even worse if they didn't put a pile into Stoke today. Just like Hughes to give Chelsea a helping hand. We have improved vastly from last season.

:wenger::wenger: 6 games 5 wins and a draw how much more consistent do you want us to be, 2nd in the table only of GD

You're right. Don't know why I used that word. Just hope we get out of this habit of starting the second half poorly. With Pogba missing, the midfield balance just does not feel right. Am delighted with the start we have made.

Aren't we part of the top 2?

I meant within the next month, I hope we stay in touch. Some tough fixtures coming up with CL games sandwiched in between

    Mourinho reacts
“It’s the same number of points as when we win 4-0. Difficult place to come against a good opp with nothing lto lose. In the last 25 mins they were very offensive and tried to take the point.

We had chances to kill the game and we didn’t tackle them and we put ourselves into a position to defend to preserve the result which we did extremely well. I am really happy.”

Good reaction. Yes we could have scored more, but it doesn't matter at this stage. The points do.

A win is a win. Not an easy away match. How we bemoaned drawing these last season. Onwards.

Nooo you misunderstood me , like I said I'm not talking about what happened with Lukaku, just saying that touching the ball first has never been a guarantee to not be given a FK against nor booked. It's all it is. Why are you so angry ?

Our game today was a carbon copy of last season. The only difference being that we would have drawn this last year. But I have no complains since we have three points in the bag. Lukaku showed how much this win meant to our team at the final whistle. I love his passion.

Chelsea, you mean that team who has scored 5 goals less than us and conceded 3 more, the team below us in the table who lost at home to Burnley?

Getting to the top as a wind-up merchant takes diligence, work and committment. Best of luck for the future.
Thank you! Would have got back with the comment 'Let us talk again later when we have faced the teams from the top 6" except for the fact that I love Manchester United more than just proving myself right. So, I won't do that. I wish good day to you, Sir and hope that we may have a decent conversation sometime in the future!

More bemused than angry to be honest. I never said getting the ball first guaranteed it's not a free kick. We all know a nasty tackle or excessive force when we see it. All i said was the commentator interpreted the situation incorrectly, which he did. Obviously in a gentle tackle where he played the ball first the fact that he touched the player with the follow through shouldn't make it a free kick. I think that's a fair point.

I can't be expected to write some long explanation ruling out all the different contexts such as excessive force etc to stop pedantic shites making comments in response. We were all watching the game and could see the incident.

Haven't seen the game so surprised to read the complaints.

If we win 1-0 every week we win the title. It's games like this we would of drawn or lost in previous years.

There was a point when we won like a LOT of games in a row 1-0 under Sir Alex, I believe in 1996. Cantona scored in most games and Peter Schmeichel was man of the match in a few of them.

    http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-F...-Eric-Cantona-goals-in-1996-title-run-in.aspx

That's what wins you titles. Not the 9 nil wins against Ipswich or whatever.

"They've been under the kosh" was a common term.

Perfect example of a fan with more interest in Martial's career than what is right for Man United. Mourinho's job is to pick a winning team. He's been doing that. When he isn't then criticism would be fair.

First of all, middle finger to your attitude. Is it so terrible to care and root for human beings over a brand? Not that i ever said i cared more about Martial's success than United's.

Second. Developing our best talent isn't in the interest of the club? If you aren't going to do it, then why not just sell him now while he's young and has value, put a bunch of clauses and make money or buy him back later. I think that would be a far more profitable outcome for the club than the path we are headed currently which is a transfer request and a disgruntled player if he keeps getting benched after performing well.

Our football is miles away from where City and Chelsea are, and we are only playing weaker opponents. A win is a win i agree, and i'm always happy our manager has delivered a win as is expected of him. But so far performances against two mid table opponents in Stoke and Southampton, has hardly left me filled with confidence. You can't build domination, by being afraid to lose. That's the difference between Pep and Mourinho. Why Mourinho only wins 1 in 3 yrs. and implodes.

I'm sure all the top teams praise their LW praise for doing nothing offensively, but hey at least he can track back... Cause this whole time we've been playing football all wrong. Attackers should be valued more for their ability to defend, than create goal scoring chances...

My main issue with the game was all the long ball nonsense. Every goal kick and most free kicks were simply blasted down the field hoping to get a flick on and typically resulted in us giving up possession. It is not a crime to play out from the back and keep some possession, even if our team is mostly big guys. I also hope people will stop doubting how massive Pogba is, without him our midfield gets overrun.

On a positive note, we would've drawn or loss this match last season. One thing I know that is a sign of a good team is winning games when you don't play very good. I can see a lot of improvement from last season, but City's form concerns me. Unless they struggle around the European fixtures, I don't know if we can keep pace.

A whole lot of words for very little. How does hoping Martial leaves benefit Man United? Why would I care more about Martial as a person or Rashford? You don't give a feck if Rashford isn't playing. Call it what it is. An irrational love for a person you will never know.
