    Lukaku
    Martial Miki Rashford
    It's time.
“There are so many players in good form, it’s hard for all of them [when they do not start],” Mourinho told reporters. “On Wednesday, the attacking players; Martial, Rashford, Mata, Lingard, which one of them deserves to be on the bench tomorrow? No-one.”
Mourinho went on to describe how difficult it is to leave players out, especially when you take into consideration that Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who have both also started the season in fantastic form, would also expect to regain their places for the Premier League match.
“No-one deserves to be on the bench,” he added. “But there is four of them, four of them plus Lukaku is five, plus Mkhitaryan is six, and I cannot play with six [attackers].”

The question isn't, obviously, that Martial and Rashford can't play together as such, but if they can play together also with Lukaku on the pitch, leaving a playmaker out (Mata) when we need to create game through possession without Pogba out, besides not having yet another striker (Ibrahimović) on the bench.

Let's imagine we start Southampton away that 4-2-3-1 with Fellaini in the team and things don't go our way, Southampton gains an advantage and sits back, what do we do? Do we throw the imposing figures of Herrera, Mata or Lingard at them? Of course not. When Ibrahimović's available, all these considerations will change and in specific games, counterattacking away, for instance, we could see those three starting together.

Mata provides us control that having both Martial and Rashford won't. Add Mkhitaryan and we're asking for trouble.

Mata is a necessary playmaker further up the pitch who keeps the ball moving and the game - with Matic - under our control.

He will play, at the expense of one of Rashford - Martial and rightly so.
On the spot. That's what I expect also, specially after Mata's last game, in which he was took out at the break. Also, Mourinho always started 4-2-3-1 against Southampton and Mata was always on those teams.

Sure, it does seem like Mourinho is set on that, regardless of the growing temptation to squeeze Rashford and Martial in.

Personally I'd look at how good Mata was against Burton, Miki blowing a little hot and cold so far this season, and the fact that if you do play Rashford, Martial and Lukaku you've already got plenty of pace on the pitch, and drop Miki to let Mata play #10. He'll have Matic and Fellaini/Herrera doing plenty of hard work behind him, the three forwards looking fast and strong in front of him, and he can focus on being as purely creative as he likes, which is important in Pogba's absence. Mourinho likes Miki because he offers more different things - pace, a bit more physical presence, a good defensive shift - but in that side do you really need those things from your #10?

I think we all know there'll come a time and place for that line up (Rashford & Martial either side of Lukaku) and that may see Mourinho play with a back 3 with Luke as the wing-back/forward on the left and perhaps Valencia or Young on the other side ... and take your pick to play inside them always including a Matic & (if fit) Pogba with Mata and or Mhiki ... how does that song go ... "Oh what fun is to play ... "

I agree with all you say with one small exception; I think Mhiki has been marvelous. He's a had a few patches in a few games where things don't quite come off for him but I think that's what we love about him! As often than not they do come off! He's being given a freedom to play (earned by being patient at the start of last year ) and is still "growing" into this league. He does the unexpected, loves to run through the middle of a defense. Great to watch but it will come at the cost of a few moves that break down. Nature of the beast.

All that said, rotating Mhiki & Mata as the no. 10's must happen as the games pile up methinks.

    ------------De Gea---------

    Valencia-Bailly-Jones-Young

    ------------Matic------------

    ------Herrera----Mata-------

    --Rashford-Lukaku--Martial

    Thank you for talking sense.

Mata NEEDS to be in the starting eleven. There's no fluidity or flair in our play without him.

For the Americans with Direct TvV.....am I missing it?....I don't see that the United match is being shown tomorrow....first time in a long time!

I'm on U-verse with all their Sports Packages and still they don't seem to have it. This is one of the 3 games during the year for which NBC wants to sell us a subscription to NBC Gold for $50. I will try to find a stream, I don't want to be ripped off by NBC.

Will the MUTV app carry the game?

    De Gea
    Valencia Bailly Jones Young
    Matic Fellaini
    Mata Mkhi Rashford
    Lukaku

Subs: Romero, Smalling, Darmian, Carrick, Herrera, Lingard, Martial

The squad pretty much picks itself at this point, which is pleasing. Only question is Rashford or Martial to start - think it'll be Rashford here then Martial midweek.

    Same lineup prediction as yours

I've gone for United 3-0 on the predictor. It isn't an easy place to go, but, the way we are playing just now, I think we might put in a really good performance. It will be a good indicator of progress anyway.

United will win this 4-0. Lukaku brace, Mata and Martial to score one each.

This is true and also funny given your username.

Oh, I agree. He's looked much more like his best self so far this season, albeit still with some room to improve. But I think although Miki's pace lets him score and create goals out of nowhere in a way Mata can't, so far this season Mata's contribution has been more consistent - every minute of every game, he will offer you the same precise passing, the same assured possession of the ball, the same eye for an assist. There haven't been any loose spells like we've had from Miki where his judgement goes awry or he keeps losing the ball or he drifts out of the game.

So if I was selecting for this game and went with Martial and Rashford on either side, I'd probably pick Mata as #10 because he's the pure #10, the one you can rely on to do an 8/10 job in that position throughout. The rest of the team already cover all your other bases. Also Southampton will have the sense to try and park the bus and absorb pressure, and of the two of them Mata is better suited to that situation - Miki is more dangerous with more space, when we're more likely to get chances to counterattack.

But as you say, the creative AM job(/s) is/are shared between the two of them, we'll see plenty of both throughout the season.

Hard to see whom to drop out of Martial Mata Rashford and Mhikatarian.
All in such a good form.

Someone knows a bar in Amsterdam that will show the game?
    Preferably around RLD.
Seems like Stoke-chelsea is the main match on TV.

Odds on Utd win are now up to 1.85 for those who fancy us.

This is a tough away game. Any scoreline win today is welcome.

    10:50KEY EVENT
Shaw and Lindelof to miss out
MEN photographers spotted 20 players boarding the plane for Southampton - which is consistent with Mourinho’s usual preparations.

One goalkeeper and one outfield player will miss out from the 20 below.

Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof were not spotted, which strongly suggests they have been left at home and their difficult start to the season continues.

Is Gabiadini out. I read somewhere that he was injured but might make the bench. Long can be dangerous for them. I predict a 3-1 win for us.

    First real test without Pogba.
Think we will struggle but get the win in the end.
    Lukaku to score

Anyone travelling down, the M3 is shut north and southbound. Its been crazy. I've just come out of Southampton and a 10 minute drive took over 1.5 hours.

Rumours they have the bomb squad out, but that's questionable sources right now, we'll see.

Any mancs know any bars in the Deansgate area that will be showing this?

Can see this ending with a draw, but hope and think we will get a 1-0 win today. Juan Mata with his first goal of the season. Although once we get that goal it will probably end with 4-0 to us and Martial coming on and scoring ;).

The big question is will Martial start?

Not sure if I see Mourinho playing both him and Rashford out wide in an away game v Southampton.

Not sure Mata plays either. He was subbed off in league cup final at half time against them as they were getting a lot of joy down that side.

If we start Young today, it'll be pretty clear who our first choice LB is. And I'm perfectly happy with Young, he can actually put a cross in.

    I also went for,

    DDG

    Valencia
    Jones
    Bailly
    Young
    Matic
    Herrera
    Mata
    Mkhitaryan
    Martial
    Lukaku

    Lingard
    Fellaini
    Rashford off the bench

Came to the thread to see if anyone mentioned it. Looks a major incident.

Glad to hear the team went by plane.
Hope any of our fans going get there ok!

Not that clear, it depends much more on the type of game and opponent than a clear hierarchy between Blind, Darmian and Young.
