If a player does a give and go in the middle of the pitch and after he releases the ball he gets hacked down from behind nobody would say that it isn't a foul. They'd call it a late tackle and a clear foul. Why is there a difference if a shot's taken compared to a pass being made?

I'm not arguing that it isn't a pen as per the rules. It's a foul in the box so it's a pen.

However I completely understand the view that a pen is mainly to compensate for a lost goal scoring opportunity due to a foul. That didn't happen here.

Fecking can of worms to ask refs to make such a determination though which is why we have the hard rule in place.
