Good for the first 10 minutes and then again after the water break

Our best player on the pitch will probably be the first subbed, Matić.

Their midfield is a class above to be honest. Kroos and Modric with Casemiro behind and Isco in the free role. Pogba needs to demand the ball more, he looks like he doesn't want it and keeps drifting onto the left wing. Mkhi has been decent, I'd take off lingard for rashford to give us more width

Mkhi's been disappointing but not awful. Darmian needs to take more initiative on the ball, he doesn't seem to have any other intentions apart from knocking it to the nearest teammate. Valencia's got into some good positions but his delivery is lacking.

I'm not watching but even I know it's not that bad. People probably being drama queens as usual in match day threads and overblowing everything negative about us while over hyping everything done by our opponents.

Do what I do, use it as an opportunity to put the moaners on ignore. It's a pretty good forum if you can avoid the 10% of moaning morons who post constant crap.

    My first half observations

    • What formation are we actually playing?
    • Matic looks very solid
    • Lingard is way out of his depth tonight
    • Pogba looks asif hes always holding something back, world beater at times then average!
    • Iscos performance could see Bale leave! The man is incredible
    • Rashford and/or Martial please

How could anyone blame Martial, if God forbid, he asks to leave UTD when fekin Lingard has advantage over him…

They look fitter also and more adapted to the climate than us.
Big difference is the defenders. Ours are all good/great on the ball. Yours don't know what to do and treat the ball as if it's made of lava

Can't be helped: Quality defeats quantity.

We need to change to more attacking play style as there's no other way.

Matic is the best player so far from our side.

Literally a repeat of last season so far. No urgency going forward. Why the feck have we not bought a winger yet, we desperately need service from the left. Darmian doesn't provide anything going forward either.

Who the feck did we play last season remotely close to this Madrid team? We're doing well, not being outclassed, or being thrashed as many in here would have you believe. We need a winger though, yes.

When you have players like Martial and Rashford how can you start Lingard? I mean what the feck, no other team would leave inferior players on the bench to 'do a job'

Our attack is fecking awful. Lukaku has been completely isolated with zero support offered.

Miki and Lingard have both been dreadful. If they are our first choice wing options then we are fecked.

Why the hell have we not bought a left back this summer????

Every single fear that most fans have had about our lack of key transfers this summer has been shown up.

Get Rashford and Martial on for the second half. They can't be any worse than the clowns supporting Lukaku at the moment.

Bit shit we are losing to a goal that shouldn't stood. Not a terrible half. Just not creating anything in the periods where we have some possession.

But considering we are against the Spanish Champions, Champions League winners 2 years in a row and probably the best team in the world atm we could be doing worse.

Matic class, Pogba and Lukaku with some idiot decisions. Darmian not good enough in a match like this. Lindelöf look better but still don't understand why he so nervous.

Hope we dont buckle under pressure like Juve did and show more fight. Lukaku needs service and we have no one to provide it right now.

Not bad. Some good work, esp Matic, Mhiki and Valencia. Their fecking goal was well taken but fecking offside - course they are on another level, tempo wise, passing wise; but still encouraging for the season ahead. I can see us scoring here. BTW; Can you be offside when the opposing player last touches the ball?

Which is why he desperately wanted Perisic because he is a disciplined winger.

I know, but surely one of them has the awareness to realise when they need to stay out there and create space in the middle?

Neither Isco or Bale play as out and out wingers but they seem to mix up their movement and positions all the time.

Obviously it helps that Marcelo and Carvajal are basically wingers when Madrid have the ball too...

Martial or Rashford are needed. Both will actually carry a threat in attack.

We've been better since the drinks break but I'm disappointed that we didn't test Navas. Our left hand side is non existent at the moment and Isco has been everywhere. We're struggling to pick him up. Another thing that infuriates me is why do we play long from every goal kick? Lukaku isn't a target man and we shouldn't be asking him to hold the ball because that isn't his game. He's been very isolated and that's a shame because he's looked quite dangerous when he has the ball. Matic has been superb. Very impressed with him but we need to stop giving Madrid respect by sitting behind the ball and start pressing them in their own half. They are prone to mistakes.

I might get criticized for this but Mourinho is just been negative. Too much respect for real madrid from our part.
We should press them in midfield and play a bit higher up the pitch.
Also bring on Martial or rashford to run at their defence.

Press them in midfield? Modric, Kroos then Isco would walk around the midfield. They're really, really fecking good. United can press and win the ball back, but where will they pass it to because when you're pressing you're out of position and not a clue where your passing lanes are once you get the ball back.

We've looked ok in defense and midfield, but the forward line just doesn't have enough dynamism and invention in it against a team of this class.

    As should have the coaching!!

Sad really, because it seems like Mour has just given up on the middle part of utd, David is just kicking right over the top to the striker and one is within 50 yards of him.

Encouraged by this showing. I think the heat is definitely a factor, potentially for both sides, although Madrid are the more efficient team in possession. Why we're playing somewhere where the conditions aren't ideal I don't really know, but i guess money. Ruins the intensity of the game, but hopefully will condition the players better for the weekend.

First ten there were some excellent link ups and we looked genuinely threatening, then Real's quality pushed us into our own half. Isco's a bit good. We've shown a little at the end of the half.

We're only a bullshitgoal away from being level.

You could see after about 15 minutes that we were struggling. Madrid were getting all the 50/50 balls.

I would replace Micky T and Lingarrd.

Mkhi's been disappointing but not awful. Darmian needs to take more initiative on the ball, he doesn't seem to have any other intentions apart from knocking it to the nearest teammate. Valencia's got into some good positions but his delivery is lacking.

    They're not mutually exclusive

We have no left side to our team. Lingard isn't a LWB or a LW, he just plays it safe everytime he's in possession. He's Cleverly 2.0.

Martial or Rashford on asap plz.

Watched the replay of the goal, none of the defenders were right to thier man, no 1 single player to blame, but Valencia and Lindelof could have both done better.

I didn't expect to win this match, too many people did for some reason, perhaps because we beat them in pre season. Having said that I do think we should have gone on the front foot, play with Martial Lukaku and Rashford, force them to sit back a bit.

We won't dominate these types of clubs because our culture is to attack over common sense. When Madrid dominated, their was a lot of interchanging - shifting us about but they didn't create a ton of chances. Deserved the goal though it was offside. We have been ok but need to make better decisions. We've got into some good positions. We need more quality. It's a good work out for us - that said, they're on the ground every tackle made. I would dislike playing these types week in week out. Stay on your feet

People saying Madrid are just too good for us are lazy. Don't get me wrong they are, but not by this much.

Any casual Madrid fan must be astonished at how bad we've been.

I think we are playing 3-5-2

Lingard useless and Mikhi clearly isn't a big games player obviously.

Mata and Martial for Lingard and Mikhi, then Rashford for Herrera later.

Get near the opponents box and we are clueless, poor passing and decision making, wish we would try a 4 4 2 formation and give Lukaku some support.
