    Does anyone seriously think there have been any positives to be taken from this setup so far tonight?

    I don't think there has been. We've had 5 at the back, but it was wave after wave of pressure from Partizan until we got a pen against the run of play. We were looking in real trouble then.

    Then you add, we're playing with 1 striker and no real movement or attacking purpose from behind and it's the same old story yet again. When i look at us, i struggle to think where the goals are coming from, there appears to be no attacking plan and we still look soft and easy to be got at, regardless of how defensive we set-up. Those are massive problems that we have had for how many months now and still look none the wiser of how to change that.

    I hope we can hold on for the whole 2nd half because if Partizan equalise, i think we'll be in for another embarrassment.
     
    McTominay and Garner are playing too close together and go too deep towards their own goal. Need Mata or Lingard to play closer to them as an outlet, then release out wide/channel.

    No. It was 5 at the back with Garner & McTominay in defensive mid, Lingard & Mata supporting as inside midfielders & Martial on his own upfront.
     
    Take Lingard off and bring someone else in. Our midfield can't keep the ball to save our lives.

    I realise that but I can’t stand it when redcafe decided a youngster has done really well when he clearly hasn’t. Williams has been good though.
     
    They are all over us. This formation is even worse than the shite Solskjær has come up with over the last few months.

    I think it's more of a case of Ole sticking with Sunday's formation but aren't playing a side of Liverpools quality tonight.
     
    3 times this half the Partizan forwards have gone past Maguire like he doesn't exist. Can't blame Lindelof this time. I am sure it's Rojo and Jones's fault
     
    Garner to me looks like he just needs more minutes but I like the look of him.
     
    It's not just that we have not bloody plan as a team. Most of our players are actually worse 1 vs 1 against theirs as well. I refuse to believe that's actually the case. The mentality and confidence of most of them is just shockingly bad. :mad:
     
    I know it is probably a combination of all three, but I do sometimes wonder what is the biggest contributor to our poor performances:

    A) Players simply not good enough, B) Lack of confidence, C) Poor management/coaching.

    Answers on a postcard please.

    It's like as if we've tried to play as many defensive players as possible with no real thought if it's actually cohesive or not.

    It doesn't matter how many defenders you play if it becomes wave after wave of pressure against you, because the opposing team aren't worried by your impotent 'attacking' setup.

    It's embarrassing watching this.

    Relieved we got the penalty. Hopefully we will have more opportunities to counter in the 2nd now.

    Not sure why both Lingard and Mata are on, to be honest. With Martial understandably rusty, we could do with Greenwood or Rashford alongside him to provide more goal threat and run in behind. Mata and Lingard are pretty much playing like two no10s behind Martial.

    Also, one thing I don't like about this formation is Maguire is the deepest defender (understandable as he's the best, especially in the air) but it means we're often using Jones as the most advanced CB, carrying the ball forward, which is not good.

    He should just get Mata off and bring in Greenwood then possibly Laird for AWB.
