As you said, this isn't a team that is being coached the way a top team should be. A change in a couple of personnel isn't going to make any difference.
When he first burst onto the scene, it was his movement and ability to lose the cb inside the box that made me think we found an absolute gem.
If you were to watch tape of him now vs that first year to 18 months under lvg you wouldnt even know your watching the same player

Yep Fred's passing can be a liability, but he's busy and recycling the ball, and he can run. I also feel he's got a good shot on him if he can get up the pitch.
