It seems savage to be talking about taking a cannonball to the head with what we know and continue to learn about the terrible effects of head trauma... but players are coached to keep their hands away from the ball in all circumstances, turning your back or even dodging it is better than giving away a certain penalty on VAR. Players who put their hands up to defend themselves have no business being in the wall.
It's not explicitly written in the laws either way, it's up to the referee's interpretation. There's been guidance in the past that protection is OK. I'd expect the ref to prioritise an obvious player safety issue over a ball that's sailing towards the corner flag, for example.

I’m a United fan and when I saw that I felt let down, from someone who was a captainI hope we get as least a draw here, I can't believe how many mistakes are being made, last Sunday and today, they have to move the ball quicker, do they want top 4 or not, it's beyond me how they seem to not want it, come on , move the ball quicker. Can see a equaliser coming, if we do not keep making silly errors.
Could make a difference re Chelsea though. A win at home against West Ham has to be the minimum expectation at any point of the season - but at the tail end when you're chasing top 4, it is a result you simply have to get.
