Controlling the game since the goal without creating much.

We got the goal, but I wonder why Rooney didn't smash that first time?

Yep, needless touch and he looks way off pace. Even after he took the touch, should have just poked it in but was waiting for God knows what. Looks sluggish.

 Why doesnt Valdes even have the United suit.
    Wondered that too

I can't wait for Michael Owen's insights during the second half.

"I've always said that it's a game played with a bouncy thing that's like a circle but in 3D."

"He's not scored there when he's tried to score which is what he is paid to do usually - to score, that is."

"Hoddle's gone off on one again".

Can't understand the formation change. Play 433 with herrera in for mata and Memphis out wide. That's by far and away the best way to play.

We are playing 4-4-2...which only works with a solid ball winner and fast attacking wingers.

We need to dominate midfield more.

    Indeed.

This is actually quite similar to Fergie, two deep CM recycling the ball. However with Mata out wide and the philosophy its a little limp.

Pretty much a standard opening game of the season. Would like to see us attack with more intent in the second half. Grab one more and this is all over.

Its first game of the season with a few new players so lots of mistakes are to be expected. We just need to grind a win so as to maintain confidence and momentum

Think the Rooney critcism is harsh. His movement has been good, he is link up play has looked promising if rusty. Case in point the curling cross from deep aimed toward Memphis.

Starting to feel more confident about him leading the line this season. Its easy to forget how good he can be as lone striker.

Looks sluggish to me, off pace. fecked up the goal too.

Played as expected really. Slow and predictable build up, and poor transition play. Herrera must play.

We've been better since the goal. Haven't read even 90% of the comments here but from the other 10% or so I've seen Rooney getting criticism already. Hope they are joking. He's been fine. No one has been standouts, a few have looked deadly. Smalling has Kane more or less in his back pocket.

More of that in second half - ideally more chances. Midfield have been rather quiet.

Sub Young for Hernandez, move Memphis out left, move Hernandez up top and play Rooney in the middle/second striker with Mata out right.

Can't believe criticism of Schneiderlin, exactly what we need in the middle of park, physicality. Also has won the ball about 8 times. He's gonna be immense for us.

Overall, much better after the goal but we need to be much more aggressive. Definite pre-season feel to it.

He's won the ball for us about 8 times after losing it for us god knows how many times? If we wanted a brute ball winner who is bad on the ball, we could find loads of those. He needs to step up and be tidier in possession because its not good enough right now

What??? Carrick has been our best player in the middle. Take him off and we'll collapse!

Yeah, this. He's been creating every move going forward. His passes to the wide positions have been immense. Herrera should be coming on for Young, and Memphis pushed out wide, with Herrera linking midfield to attack.

If Rooney play as a striker all season, I think he might have a great season just like the 2009/10.

Romero's mistakes followed by this facial expressions have been the bright spark of the game so far.

He seems scared a cop will run onto the pitch and arrest him, hiding a shady past that guy.

We got better when Mata moved infield more. He should stop playing like a winger. Very happy with Memphis and Darmian

Twitter: United's shots in the first half

I can't wait for Michael Owen's insights during the second half.

"I've always said that it's a game played with a bouncy thing that's like a circle but in 3D."

"He's not scored there when he's tried to score which is what he is paid to do usually - to score, that is."

"Hoddle's gone off on one again".
Twice Hoddle has slipped and said "We" meaning spurs

Really, I can't remember too many. I remember him getting fouled, and therefore losing one ball, but I can't remember any others (my stream was out for the first 5 minutes, so that could be it.)

edit: just saw a highlight of one such instance, leading to a shot - happened before I got my stream running. Any others?
I remember other instances in the first 20-25 min on the wings and in midfield. Not crucial dispossessions, but it's frustrating to watch.

Carrick looks different when he is only one in front of 2 CBs and when he is part of 2 holding MFs,almost similar as Matic for Chelsea in 2nd part of last season.

Good first half of football, there shouldn't be any changes yet and more of the same please boys. Get in United!
