I thought Mourinho's press conference before the game was today…

    FFS!

I swapped my early shift for a late one as a favour to a colleague.

I had no idea we were playing on Friday - I'm now going to miss the first half!

Fail for many reasons, rule 101 - never do favours for anyone! 102 - check the fixtures ;)

Will need to watch this one at a Pub in Old Street, London. Hopefully there's a decent place with it on.

    :)

    Yep!

The worst thing is that I was supposed to be on holiday this week but another colleague needed the week off so I swapped as a favour!

I definitely need a copy of that Rule book!

    I'd love to see:

    DDG

    Tony V, Bailly, Blind, Shaw

    Mickey T, Pogba

    Lingard, Mata, Martial

    Ibra

    What we'll likely see:

    DDG

    Tony V, Bailly, Blind, Shaw

    Fellaini, Carrick

    Mata, Rooney, Martial

    Ibra

Hope we win and by a few goals. When LVG was at the helm we never killed teams off but hopefully we will now, we have the firepower. So a easy win please is all I ask, oh and a Pogba rocket right into the corner. Perhaps two pogba goals? I'm not greedy though so one will be enough, as long as city lose too.

I'm still coming to terms with having Jose, Pogba and Ibra. Added with Mkhitaryan on the bench and the emergence of Bailly. It's a beautiful time.

    2-0 United is my prediction.

I definitely wouldn't want to see that.

Anyway Southampton fans seem to be quite pessimistic. They weren't impressed with their first game and not been impressed with their transfers.

I know we're playing at home, but the line up you want is maybe just a tad 'optimistic'. No defensive cover whatsoever.

But I would really love to see Mikhi start. And also Pogba, if he's deemed fit enough. I doubt he is, but I look forward to seeing him in action for 30+ minutes hopefully!

 Jesus man. Mkhi in centre mid next to Pogba? Irrational indeed.

I personally think Pogba will start. He seems the type to keep himself in shape and would not require so much training before being physically ready. Also hope to see Mikhi over Mata. Ideally it would be over Rooney, but I can't see that happening. I don't really have any qualms with Mata but think Mikhi would provide us more of a cutting edge in the final third. If it was up to me, they would both be playing.

    What I expect:

    -------------DDG --------------
    Valenica-Bailey-Blind--Shaw
    -------Fellaini----Pogba------
    ---Mata-------Rooney----Martial------
    ----------------Ibra---------------------

I think even if Pogba is fit he won't start. Just doesn't send the right message to the other players in team. Why even try if he is going to be guaranteed to start, even after many said the 2 central midfielders had a good game in our win vs Bournemouth.

Because we broke the world record transfer fee for him? Wouldn't make much sense in doing that for a player not guaranteed to start eventually. Also, I personally think Herrera was quite unimpressive vs Bournemouth and certainly not at the level to justify keeping Pogba out of the team. Fellaini, on the other hand was outstanding and deserves to keep his starting spot for now.

If Pogba fails to impress, and he continues starting then yeah, that could be sending the wrong message. Ie. Rooney.

You have to be more subtle about it, if you think he should be guaranteed to start. Just popping him in straight away sends the message to the player that played (according to the masses) in a winning performance of you can do nothing, you just have to accept it. This will not only de-motivate the player and make the player play worse, but will also provide less competition for Pogba and so Pogba could get complacent and that also could affect his performances

I see what you're saying but at the same time, if he doesn't start this game, he would probably start in the next, provided he is up to standard in training, in which case the two midfielders could perform well again and they would feel even more unmotivated because they would have played well twice in a row, and so on. I think Herrera was actually one of the lesser performers vs Bournemouth anyway and many agree so it wouldn't exactly be a bad time to slot Pogba in next to Fellaini.

You make a good point but I think the problem of complacency would be solved by dropping the player after a couple of bad performances anyway in which case they would have to prove themselves before re-entering the team.

Will be interesting to see who starts. Does Mourinho reward people who had a good performance v Bournemouth? That would mean Fellaini, herrera, blind/bailly, mata all stay in. Pogba i think will d3finitely start so one of the mids is out at least, and no reason to leave Carrick out so I can see both changing. But then again, bit harsh on the mids from last game?

Similarly with smalling. He is back and Mourinho probably sees him as the main center back. Blind and Bailly have been class though so do they stay for now? The right wing is another tricky area to look at. Mkhitaryan in line to make his full debut, at home, could be an ideal chance. Mata though had a very good game so no reason to drop him. Then you have Lingard who had a very good game v Leicester and only was dropped because of his injury, so does that mean he gets back in in front of both Mata and Miki?

I am very confident in thinking that Mourinho's main lineup this season will be:
    De gea
    Valencia smalling bailly Shaw
    Carrick Pogba
    Mkhitaryan Rooney Martial
    Ibrahimovic
And all are fit right now, so does he look to bed them in as quickly as possible, or stretch it out and reward the others to let them keep their spots? Anyway, its a good problem to have, good competition for places and multiple players all having positive reasons, rather then players simply being the least shit like what happened often the last few seasons.

I don't think Blind will be dropped. He's pretty critical to how we play. His use of the ball out of the back is outstanding, and he's become a very solid defender. I reckon Mourinho is starting to become quite impressed with him. Think he and Herrera were both largely excellent on Sunday.

Assuming Pogba won't play the entire game (most likely scenario), do we want him to start or finish off the game?

I'd prefer the latter just because it would be pretty demoralizing if we lost a lead, while it would be a very encouraging sign if we could either catch the game by the neck in the final 30 or just finish off a lead without fuss.

I agree. Bailly needs Blind as much as Smalling needs Blind. Blind + either one is the way to go. Onus is on Smalling to perform in training and when given the chance, take it. But at the moment its Bailly's spot, with Blind. Bailly and Smalling would be horrendous.

Anyway, regardless of all that. Several beers, the smell of the burger vans and a Stretty end atmosphere, I cant wait!! Seems like ages since I was at OT. I didn't do the re-arranged Bournemouth game and so who did we play prior to the bomb scare?

Same here can't wait for the game and like you the last home game I went was Leicester 1st May!

Hopefully we put a stop to the embarrassing home defeats to Southampton tomorrow.

What about with Blind or Carrick as the DM? Surely that way they fulfil the same function of doing the 'passing out' but you also get two full-size CBs to give us that extra protection against set pieces and crosses.

Not that I have a problem with Blind at CB, he's generally excellent there.

I think Blinds like of physicality is more of an issue in midfield than centre half. Plus, I do think Bailly and Smalling both need him to hold their hand. Fantastic little player Blind. He's our new Carrick in the sense that he'll guarantee consistent performances whilst improving the performances of others around him.

Since when do DMs have blistering pace?

Edit: Maybe you are talking about strength, because length didn't seem to be a problem for Cambiasso et al.

Didn't mention pace. Just all round physicality.

Blind at DM is a waste of a player for me. Use him centre back where he improves us and where we are relatively short of quality. We have lots of options in centre midfield without trying to play him there.

As I previously said, I rate Blind highly. I think he's a great player.

However, if you think he is a defensive midfielder then I would urge you to watch the Leicester 5-3 match and the West Brom and Everton away match from his first season. He was found badly wanting physically in terms of pace, strength, stamina....everything.

Strength and pace I agree. However, his stamina is pretty outstanding as he covered a lot of ground when he played in midfield.

Ugh yes please. I live in London and I travelled up and back on the same day in LVGs first season.

Experiencing that defeat and having an 4 hour train ride after was a sobering experience.

Missing this game as I am vest man at a wedding and its the night before, a few social commitments but ill be slyly following the game.

Hoping Pogba has a start I can definitely see him and Fellaini in a midfield 2 at some point. Would mean Mhiki can start as he would have adequate defensive cover.

Just noticed the guy leading the line-up prediction table is still a newbie even though he joined in 2008
