Not exactly brimming with confidence for this one. Hope I’m wrong. Expecting a performance we regularly got under previous managers when we made a lot of changes. Players rusty, unfamiliar with one another, players trying too hard to impress... we’ll see.

    Meh.

I don’t see why you lot are getting so hung up on the performance. This was always going to be the case.

I know playing Chong might be seen as a gamble, but so is continuing to play invisible players! Chong would add width and with a bit of running would push the whole team up.

Mata off for Chong. Also maybe Gardener for Mctominay

About 60 mins I'd like Garner for McTominay and Chong for Mata. Then Rashford for Lukaku about 10 mins from the end. All in favour say Aye

guess we have been spoilt by OGS after 4 games. 2-0 up and we are all unhappy.

Nope, we have been unhappy even after 4-0 under Mourinho.

But ok, I'd expect better stuff against Spurs. I'm just afraid Ole might have decided to start Valencia for Spurs considering Young is starting this game. Could be a massive mistake.

If he starts Valencia we'll get murdered down the right

If you get the midfield right, the rest falls into place.

We should be murdering these guys.

That might be a bit too simplistic.... but we definitely need more nous in midfield. It's good to see Matic actually playing defence splitting forward passes now that Mourinho has gone. And Herrera's levels have risen now he has the manager's confidence. And Pogba obviously is transformed. But even so, our first choice midfield lacks quality against the best sides. Outside those three, I am afraid we are seeing today, we just lack quality in midfield.
Our front options, however, are immense. Also we need to add to our central defence.

    51 min

Our first attack of the second-half, led by Dalot as he gets to the goal line but his cross is too high for Lukaku and Sanchez in the middle.
Midfield just looks off the pace. Fred not winning challenges. Lukaku not making it stick.

    Quite frustrating so far tbh.

He actually has very little of the benefit of Fellaini though.
Can you ever imagine McTominay racking up 25-30 goals for us?

We could use Fellaini's experience in that midfield, he'd at least be a half-decent shield for the defence.

    Fred-Pereira-Mctominay clearly does not work.

He isn't a no.6 at all, it's the equivalent of playing a young Mata at no.6 and then saying he's shit because he's not doing a good job there.
Perreira is the latest example of the Rooney principle - some people are so desperate to like him that they'll insist he's being used in the wrong way every time he plays.

Seems like these Utd players have been brain washed with Mourhinos tactics.

    52 min

Darmian with a good run forward, sets up Mata on the left but again the cross is overhit and the chance is lost.
I don't really care about the performance here. There are very few players on the pitch that will be of importance to us in the PL and CL anyway

A Lukaku at Everton or West Brom was a different animal. Last season José had him playing like how he wants center forwards to play which was with their back to goal and dropping deep to hold the ball up. That’s not his game. With a manager who plays the ball forward and get good service to him he would outscore anyone in this team.

Rashford is arguably better atm but Lukaku isn’t just a squad player

That doesn't matter. Who scores doesn't matter, how the attack functions matters and with Rashford ahead of Lukaku Utd can play a more fluid and technical game which allows more from everyone.

When he gets back in the team he will score, but will the team be better for his inclusion? That is the only thing that counts and what has been the argument with Lukaku from the start.

It's a cup game, with a second-string squad, against game-raising opposition and we're winning 2-0. I'm not entirely sure how people can be so negative about 45 minutes of football.

This. And we get the advantage of seeing players we never got a chance to see under the Sacked One.

How Lukaku always manages to mis-time his jump to bring the hoofball down is the million euro question .

I don't get people saying we don't deserve our lead.

Didn't Mata deserve his penalty? VAR confirmed it.

    Didn't Lukaku deserve his goal?

We deserve our lead, people just like being miserable.

Agree with you, of course we deserve to be winning. We've played a low energy counter attacking performance and are nailing it.

I know we'd like more energy and maybe low energy isn't the objective, but we've not given Reading any clear cut chances and have created enough to win the game.

I'm not saying I've enjoyed it, but it's been effective

Dont think anyone's really earned themselves a start against Spurs with this so far... a few decent at best performances tbh

    53 min

So close to 2:1 as Harriott gets a shot away in the box and Romero saves with his legs. Reading still having a good go here and a goal for them will change the mood at Old Trafford.
