Chelsea beat promoted Burnley and Leicester......people call them champions elect
Man Utd beat promoted QPR......it's only QPR

It's only QPR but I think at any other point in the last 2 seasons a midfield of Sandro - Fer would have absolutely bossed our midfield, and they could barely get a touch between them!

Best thing for me, was seeing our players, carry the ball and wait until they commit someone from the opposition before passing it on, Evans lost it once or twice, but the try is there, it will come and not easily learnt but it will make such a difference.

I thought Blind was very good today. Evans looked like a top drawer CB coming out with the ball and making good passes to nullify the pressing. Rafael and Rojo also looked good, apart from the obvious ones.

RVP needs his shooting boots. He'll quickly lose his pace. Maybe hes not match fit but he should have scored 2 today.

hed have buried those a few seasons ago.

Blind & Herrera impressed me today

and in typical Harry Redknapp style he throws his players under the bus:

    QPR boss Harry Redknapp:
“We gave a bad goal away but I thought we were still bang in the game at 1-0. Then we gave another two poor goals before half-time and suddenly you’re 3-0 down and we're not silly enough to think were going to win 4-3. You don't want to lose by six or seven. It’s a difficult place, but it’s not like Rob Green had a world-class game - I felt like he barely had a shot to save first half.”

I'm dissapointed in Januzaj. If he had passed to RVP or Falcao, it would have been a goal, yet he decides to make another one of his ridiculous shots (I swear, he can't shoot for sh*t). He seems to have become way more selfish than last season... Don't like it.

Anyway, every new signing was great and most of our players performed well except the usual (Valencia... God, what a difference Rafael makes).

    This ^^

Very interesting to see the image. The shape we are playing is very much like a 3-4-1-2 . I wonder will van gaal go back to it, when all our defenders come back.

What a difference. Having players, namely Di Maria, who receive the ball and immediately look to sprint forward into space, stretching the defense and creating chances, makes all the difference. We took our foot off the gas in the second half or it might well have been 8-0. Not convinced by our defense and we will lose points this season because of it. Was quite pleased with everyone other than RVP who was mostly a spectator. I think he will become a sub quickly as Falcao gets fit and sharp again. Also high praise for Herrera and Blind who made our midfield look more composed and technical again. Good result, but it was against a toothless QPR. We will have sterner tests than this. Finally off and running.

The second season is always more difficult than the first. Harsh to say you're disappointed in him. Don't think LVG has found a clear role for him yet either.

Wonderful confidence boosting win. An extra man in midfield made a world of difference. Midfield is the area where we need to control, as that will help the attack and defense. Playing 5 at the back and stroking the ball behind the halfway line is not going to help create scoring chances. We do need to tighten things at the back, but having a steady partnership will help.

Di Maria rightfully will get plaudits, but need to mention Daley Blind as well. Played the role of a defensive midfielder perfectly. Get the ball, look up and play a forward ball to players who can do the damage.

All the starters had good to excellent game. LvG needs to have a word with Januzaj about team play. For some reason he is looking a selfish player this season, not just this game, but every appearance he has made this season. Could have done without seeing Valencia, but Rafael needs to get fully fit.

The only thing I can see changing from today is Shaw at left back with Rojo in the middle, Falcao up top, and Jones next to Rojo instead of Evans. Other then that, it was pretty much our strongest line up and gets all of our best players in their best positions. Think Van Gaal will mainly use that too.

Van gaal was asked about the shape in an interview, he said he changed it because all other defenders were injured.
The 3-5-2 (it may be a 3-3-1-3)is not done yet, i think we may still see it. We can always revert back to this one. I think us fans just like the players, have mentality of playing 4 at the back, But i think van gaal is adamant on playing 3 at the back, may be he has a master plan or something. For me and for most united fans i think 4-4-2 diamonds works very well. I think this will be our most successful shape, although LVG is very particular about his tactics and may even try for the three at the back again once jones/smalling return. I hope he doesnt, but knowing van gaal he wont be done with his 3 at the back so soon.
He has done it with barca, i think he may give it a try and may change it during a match and realise it will not work. Successful people are usually stubborn. LVG i think wont let the 3-5-2/ 3-4-1-2 / 3-3-1-3 whatever you wanna call it go yet.

it's nothing like the 3-5-2 - we played a diamond midfield which is what he will no doubt keep with

    The three here are blind/evans/blackett
    The 5 are rojo,di maria,mata,herrera,rafa
    The 2 are the strikers.

Yes we started in the diamond, but the shape changes constantly. I think the average position of these players show where van gaal asked them to play, i certainly think that looks like 3 at the back(with blind dropping back time and time again making the extra centre back. Rojo and rafa going wider giving width, herrera doing the box to box role, di maria more attack mided than him. Mata as the 10 and the two strikers.

Van gaal's philosophy, hell even if you see pep and mourinho, the like a player to be able to drop in and make it a three man central defense. Busquests, javi martinez, and now alonso are doing that type of role. Alonso did that for mourinho in madrid and makelele did that when he was at chelsea, mikel was tried in that role too. The deepest midfielder becoming a passing centre back is no new thing. Carrick has done it some times for us too under ferguson but he never really had a good enough partner in his later years, Toni kroos does it alot.
Its what a "6" is for. Even brendan tries to do it with gerrard/henderson. You only have to watch the Gerrard slip video to see him being in the exact same position blind is.

I think carrick will do the same too. The philosophy is this. The shape may change. you will see either three defenders with one stepping up into the midfield (Carrick can do that), or you will see what we saw today that blind or a midfielder will drop back to make it a three man defense when the wingbacks/full backs/wingers go forward. Its fascinating to see.

    Just found the quote
For the first time since taking over Van Gaal sent out a United XI that featured a four-man defence in a 4-1-3-2 system, rather than the 3-5-2 he has favoured. “I could hardly play with five defenders because [Chris] Smalling and [Phil] Jones were injured … it would be difficult to play with three defenders because Tyler Blackett and [Jonny] Evans, maybe [Marcos] Rojo, he can also play central defender. But then I have to create a left-footed player as right-sided central defenders. I don’t think that is good,” he said before suggesting the four-man defence could remain. “I was more or less forced to play with two central defenders but it is also due to the quality of the players that I change the formation.”

At last a midfield combo that move the ball quickly and cover back denying the opponents space. All pretty good today apart from RVP who looks to have lost his way, and Rooney needs to improve his first touch. Di Maria is quality, Blind looks like Carrick on speed.

We played the diamond formation which hopefully he will stick with
Blind is at the bottom of the diamond
It is a very flexible formation - the difference between our old 442 is the "wingers" are not stuck to the wings but Herrera and Di Maria are each side of the diamond . Carrick has played the Blind role often.
As LvG likes the players not to be too far apart - with the players getting to know each other better can see the interpassing becoming electric with more games

Who has Jon Champion commentating the match, I cannot stand him he is so bitter every comments is like a snipe at us.He a City supporter ?

I think it might have been a 3-4-3 diamond midfield.

Something like the below, correct me if I'm wrong.

Don't care it was a very bad QPR team, we played much better and to the style of LvG football. Our business looks good already, i have no doubt LvG knows what he is doing.
Still the back 4 is shaky, but LvG has already been saying this and he wants to buy. The balance in midfield is delicious, a holding playmaker, b2b and a attacking dribbler you don't find anywhere else.

The optimism will be strong now, but we still have to face defeats in this learning time. Next year we will have a good fight for the title.
