This specific performance reminds me of last season. There's no real route to goal as outside of rashford, the rest of our team has noone to pass to in attack or anyone who could be in attack. No surprise that our form really kicked off when James was off for Greenwood.
a.He doesn't combine with AWB, which means we lose a crossing threat.
    b. He doesn't offer a shooting threat, which really narrows out the pitch.
    c. we can't pass to him because he's not strong enough to hold possession high, which gives us little time to organize offensively.
    d. He can't create space to cross the ball.

When you add this to Martial's lack of movement, you have a completely static attack. Bruno can do all the one-twos he wants, but with no outlet out wide, there is literally noone to pass to.

    I thought that too.

We look like pre Bruno Utd .

I'm not blaming Maguire for that goal. There was nobody marking saint maximin in our box. Ridiculous defending. Martial....the man is shot to bits FFS.

Martial has been terrible but it's basics of defending. You don't put the ball in a dangerous area. Maguire should have back headed it even at the expense of a corner.

We got we deserved in that 1st half and arguably Newcastle should be winning. Cowardly selections and tactics at home and that’s what you get

Unfortunately, I have to agree. There was a moment in the first half when Dan James got the ball into the box from the right hand side. It was a decent low cross, but Martial was nowhere near it. He wasn't working anywhere near as hard as he should have been to get on the end of it. Any half decent striker would've been working so hard just to get close to it...

He doesn't have that killer instinct to make it as a top-tier striker. I've gone right off him this season.

Yet some people say they still wouldn't want Utd to sell him

Weeks ago I had this down as a typical game to drop points in. We're been just as awful as we tend to look at home to this type of team, so I'm not shocked.

Massive second half coming up, need a big fecking response.

Watching that Newcastle goal again just makes me more angry! How easy was it for them to cross from a dangerous position after a short corner, how poor is Maguire’s header for a so called top class centre half, and De Gea is so flat footed throughout it all both with the cross and shot. A combination of awful defensive coaching and individual errors.

I'm just getting pissed off with Ole's player decisions at this stage. How are Martial or James playing over Greenwood? How is DDG playing over Henderson? I won't be shocked if he waits too long to bring Greenwood on too.

Arguments could be made for Bailly and Amad but they're less obvious decisions to me.

I reckon we can capitalise on them getting tired...still firmly believe we will have a decent second half and bag a couple. All this is if James and Martial are hooked early doors.

Yeah, he is not even close to Dave. It is bs and the myth that he goes out of his line THAT often than Dave. And about shoot stopping which is the most important thing; he is far away than Dave.

That didn't really work when I said he's much better.

Henderson comes off his line MUCH more than DDG. That is not a myth. What are you on about?

Saves shot stopping is even overrated, especially now. He makes easy shots hard because he sticks on his line.

Again, have you not seen Maguires efforts on goal all season? He most likely was trying to head it there.

He has also run further backwards to get his head on that, than De Gea would've had to forwards, even if we forget for a second that De Gea has arms.

The fact that De Gea never leaves his line, has conned many of our fans into believing it's impossible to do so.

    Ha, good point.

What are you on about, he in heads it behind him in to a terrible area. Has no control where he's heading it. Sick of people making excuses for that fridge.

Football is a team game. There are rarely goals scored where only one player is at fault. Whilst Maguire could of done better that doesn’t absolve other players that fail to do their jobs of blame.

Greenwood? Or Rashford with one of the wingers on the bench coming in. Please don’t act like we don’t have any option but to play Martial.

When has Greenwood ever led the line centrally to any great effect?
And the bench wingers are all fairly untried.

Martial scored 17 last year, he needs to be played back into form.

Scholesy echoing my thoughts on where Maguire should be heading that ball...

Not totally on him or anything, as with most of our set play goals we concede, it's very much a team effort
To be fair, it looked like he tried to flick it pretty much straight up and behind himself but it came off the side of his head a bit.

Still, we are hopeless at second balls, nobody in our defence seems to be able to guess where the ball may go. So flat footed.

We know what James is good at and that’s playing into space, it was always clear he wouldn’t get that tonight. I worry with oles judgement if he expected a great performance from him tonight.
Isn't it worrying that us, can see that from the comfort of our homes and our management can't ?

A lot of rotation, and it’s hard to keep cohesion as such. With the games coming thick and fast, it’s a time to grind out ugly wins. With McTominay and Pogba both out, that midfield looks tired.

You can see we are still a body short up front in terms of having that extra game changer. Depth isn’t there yet. So much depends on Bruno and Rashford. Martial has had a stinker of a season, and James is James.

Cant be too hard on the boys, playing Thursday. It’s tough. Newcastle have been good.

We are crying out for a midfielder that actually wants the ball and gets us playing. Should be a priority when Pogba leaves.
We are crying out for a lot of things. Midfielder, defender, striker and most importantly, the manager. Basically the same like for the past 8 years.

Slow, slow again, it's just poor again, how many times do u say it. Poor goal again to concede, had so many chances to get hold of the ball, the keeper again distribution is not good. Henderson on Thursday his distribution was top class, only once has DDG thrown it out quick to Fred and we got up to there box with 2 touches.

Greenwood needs to come on James off this us not his kind if game. Matic has been ok but hes not getting the runs, Rashford has to be better, and Martial has to give them something to hit hes behind play when he should be on his bike, his movement is pants again. Improve lads or it's a loss or another dier draw . Good to no fecker.

Pretty much sums up what I've been thinking, word for word.

Looking at this, why on earth has Maguire headed the ball behind into an area where he has no clue what's going on? Surely that either goes back they way it came or out of play?
Wait a min. Did you see the goal and feel that header was intentional. It seems obvious to me that it hit the wrong part of the head and went in a different direction than intended.

Martial dropped below Firminho’s level months and months ago.

We are playing with 10 men every time Martial is on the pitch.

If I’m wrong somebody point out a single positive thing he did in that first half, not a decent run, pass, linkup, nothing except jogging, losing the ball and mis controlling the ball.

    The silence is deafening.

The Henderson one is the only one losing me to be honest. He gave Greenwood the CF time against RS and will no doubt do so in the 2nd leg to give him minutes there.

Leave it to Bruno or Rashford to create a bit of magic, has been the formula for a long time, or hope Pogba puts on a show. McT & Cavani are a big miss, but selecting James and Martial over Greenwoood is problem that Ole needs to get his head around. James needs space to run into and Martial just doesn't look motivated, maybe we need to take his precious number off him?
Need to slightly change the midfield in the second half and probably start playing longer balls, as they're just pressing the shite out of us in our half.
We need to be coached to play from the back, it seems the players are instructed to do it but without any coaching to back it up. As soon as we get under little preassure we crumble.

We have no attack cohesion, as you say its all improvised just get the ball to Rashford or Bruno and lets hope they create something out of nowhere.

Ole seems more a motivator than an actual coach, we keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

McGuire blindly headed the ball into a dangerous area instead of safety. His mistake, imo.

I’m a supporter of Maguire. His header invited disaster, which ensued. Head the fukking ball out for a corner.
