My guess is Mourinho's going for a similar formation and style of game he tried (and failed) City at home, a 4-2-3-1 (that could easily turn into a 4-3-3) with two wide-forwards for the long balls. Would be nice if Carrick, master of long ball passes, had it in him to face this kind of opposition, but I very much doubt it.

    352. With Pogba more on the left and McTominay on the right of Matic. Sanchez dropping into number 10 positions.
Your display and explanation contradict themselves. That's the 3-4-1-2 we usually use with 3 at the back. But Pogba's never in that position, more Lingard, Sánchez or even Mata.

But I don't believe it's going to happen. Besides Real Madrid and Swansea for a cup, Mourinho never used 3 at the back when the opponent doesn't either.

3412, 352, same thing. I explained that Pogba would be on the left of Matic and Sanchez in number 10 position as well.

You explained but then put him in a different position in the display. Not the same thing at all. Also, different from 3-4-3, which could also happen.

I wanted to show Pogba as the more progressive midfielder and I explained it anyway. Defend as a 3 man midfield and Sanchez dropping in, attack with Pogba being the progressive man and Sanchez obviously joining with Lukaku.

Anyhow, a midfield three of Matić, Carrick and Pogba would almost certainly move Pogba to the right again.

What about the 4-2-2-2 we used against Chelsea, would it make sense against Liverpool too or not? Maybe because Mané and Salah are more open in the wings that Pedro and Willian it would make it hard for McTominay and Matić to close on them.

I do expect Klopp to ask his team to press slightly different anyway. I suspect they will be more conservative. We will need Pogba, Sanchez and Lukaku in top form.

As long as Herrera isn't present, Scott is definitely going to start beside Matic and Pogba.

Main concerns for me will be Bailly or Lindelof, and Martial or Lingard.

4 at the back worries me because of the position Salah picks up in between fullback and CB. Their RB also gives them width which can drag our fullback away as well. We could get our fullback to tuck in and have our LW just follow TAA.

Yeah it wasn’t pretty but Mou set us up properly for that game. Had it not been for a couple defensive lapses we would have got the result. Anyway, hope for a better outcome on Sat.
The setup to start the City game was awful. Suggest you watch the first 30mins as it was Rojo/Snalling hoofing it to their CBs. After we conceded we started playing football and actually did well trying but the original setup was awful and we need a smarter strategy to counter pressing than hoofing it for Lukaku to chase. Sometimes our plan B puts our plan A to shame

But is McTominay adequate for this game in a midfield three? He disappointed a lot, specially in attack, in that half against Palace. I wish Carrick could play here in a midfield three.

Sánchez and Martial won't do that properly, will they? Nor Mata on the other side. Rashford would, but Mourinho might not want to waste him in the cagey first part of the game.

Nobody's saying it was pretty or that it worked, just that Mourinho probably still believes in it, even without Fellaini's headers and chest control.

We don't have any better options. As much as I value Carrick I will trust Scott more than a 36 years old midfielder who hardly played this season.

We should be letting them worry about how to stop us, rather than the other way round...

    Blitz the cnuts...

Nah, that would be too easy and risky, not the Mourinho style.

Is this the Liverpool expected lineup?
    Karius
    Alex-Arnold Matip van Dijk Robertson
    Ox-Chamber Henderson Can
    Salah Firmino Mané
One thing is to be dominated, sit back and give the respect to to the midfield containing the likes of D.Silva, KDB, Fernardinho, Gundogan...Another is to be afraid of that shower above in Ox, Henderson and Can - honestly we should take the game to them no two way about it.

Really hope we don't see a repeat of our cowardly display from earlier in the season. For all their firepower upfront they can be got at and we have the individuals to hurt them, I hope we take the game to them.

My gut feeling is that this game will be perfectly set up for Liverpool to win.
Given the fact that there will be massive pressure on the team to attack and take the game to Liverpool could mean we get picked off on the counter a few times given how bad imo our wing backs have been lately in particular.

However if we show the same fighting spirit we have shown in the past few games especially in midfield against Chelsea we can get the juices flowing and rattle them early, with especially Lukaku showing his recent hunger and desire, we will get a result
Jose won't change his approach regardless of media pressure. I feel Klopp is worried about our attack hence why he took a dig at our playing style last week. He knows very well that if we sit deep his team can't score against us so he's trying to get a reaction from Jose and team to come out and attack so they take advantage of any gaps left behind. Our approach at Anfield this season shows this. A 0-0 draw but more importantly Klopp didn't make any attacking changes to take the risk to win the game. He was just as negative with his tactics as we were which shows that he's scared of our attack.

Yes, the 3 draws in the league are not just a result of Mourinho being wary. Klopp is well aware he has to be a bit more conservative as well.

You'll be disappointed. Expect the same as Chelsea. Poor first half solid display with some scares, then…

He did change his approach in the recent Spurs game and we got battered so I think that will reinforce his defensive strategy for the game.

That shower are the only team to have beaten Man City in the league this season. A classic case of the whole being more than the sum of its parts

Just because they didn't commit with 10 men camped in our half doesn't mean they played defensive. They had a fair go at it and it was nothing like our gameplan on the day

For me, these kind of games are all about points. Just dont care how we play/approach. Given Klopp was also very cautious in last meetings, a 0-0 draw is very likely.
Btw, how sweet it will be if we hold their pressure for 90 mins, and score a delfected goal in extra time :) .

Except that shower were at home and lost 4 -0 away.

Simply put, at home against that quality of midfield, we shouldn't sit back.

5-0 and down to 10 men for the majority of the match. We also had Mignolet in goal, Klavan and Matip as CB's and Moreno at LB.

Anyone thats seen us recently will tell you that we've improved massively since then. We were at home to City but that didn't stop them trying to take the game to us which is where they fell flat.

They had more possession than us but didn't take enough risks to win the game. Klopp could've changed one of his midfielders and try and open up a bit but he didn't want to lose that stability. A draw was the fair result.

Feel like you're repeating what Jose said. He gambled on them throwing on more attackers so we could counter. They didn't. But that doesn't mean they weren't already attacking in the first place. It just means they didn't go gung ho, which isn't quite the same as saying they played defensively. Just because Klopp didn't resort to his naive attacking ways doesn't mean he defended. True he was cautious but only by his own standards

More or less. Maybe Milner will come in for Henderson and Lovren/Gomez for Arnold/Matip.

If we could get a point at Anfield, we could get 3 at ours. Expecting a Mourinho master class!!

We didn't really sit back last year either, being more reserved doesn't equate to parking the bus. It was more akin to how you guys play against the smaller sides regularly and given you have 2 trophies to show for it, obviously works.

    Fairly pivotal game IMO.

I think the general feeling is that Liverpool have steadied things, are on a bit of a roll now, have shown signs of progress this season and all in all are a bit up.

We on the other hand, while 2nd in table, have been sputtering since the spurs game end of Jan, arguably stagnating/ a bit clueless in attack/ lot more work to be done. Feels like we are the 4th best team in England despite the table.

    So we shall see.

that's what I just said. Did you read what you quoted?

Well, the same applies for us as well.We are pretty strong at home and it would be a cowardly approach to sit back against your midfield.
