TBH I have noticed spaces behind Herrera and Pogba when they play together alone last season but either our defense was just too good or the opponent was dumb to not use it.

Herrera isn't a DMF by nature. He's a b2b player so he rushes upfront too often to try attacking and this leaves space behind him and Pogba so when we lose the ball both Pogba and Herrera backtrack too much to cover this space leading to the whole team getting drawn back so when we cut a ball we find a difficulty to build the play. The other solution is to ignore this space behind Herrera and depend on Herrera backtracking only to cover it but the space was still present and a good enough opponent would have benefited from it.

Matic is better in covering this space and he knows exactly when to stay back and when to press upfront because this is his position by nature, Herrera not as he's a b2b by nature not a pure DMF.

Coman isn't a goalscorer; his stats aren't that good. What he has is bags of pace. Martial is well capable of starting ahead of him.

It's a general comment not limited to this single game. Fergie had his faults but he always ensured that he had enough firepower both on the pitch and bench at his disposal. Probably just my hang up from that era.

With Mahrez playing, I'm thrilled to see what Martial can do when the opposition isnt doubling up on him every single attack. Let him have a go 1v1 a few times, and the attacking threat of Mahrez will be nullified as he'll be forced to play in defense.

That's why Jose has banged on about his 4th player and talked up how important Ibra' will be in regards to attacking options for the squad. It's rare for Jose to start with so many offensive players, so there will be games when the bench is offensively stronger.

I doubt it. Mkhitaryan is a lot better centrally and even though Mata starts out to the right he drifts inwards a lot and doesn't really play like a winger. This works perfectly well because he's brilliant in finding space and also because Mkhitaryan moves around a lot leaving space for Mata. Not to mention how Matas movement creates room for Valencia to go on wide runs forward.
