    What has Mctominay done that Matic hasnt done? Point is both haven't done anything useful. But Mctominay has been alright? You are just giving him a pass cuz he is a youngster from the academy.

    This shows the issue we have in midfield though. We don't have any worthy replacement when he doesn't play, irrespective of why he isn't playing. I agree he shouldn't have been dropped today though. And Martial is a different issue, that's probably to accommodate Sanchez.

    Of course there's different standards for them. Matic should be playing better and imposing himself more, mctominay is an average youngster who won't amount to much so not much is expected of him. Neither are obviously good enough

    The lad was completely flattened. A penalty for sure imo.
     
    Ive watched football for 40+ years. The challenge on Mctominay is one of the worst non calls I have ever seen from a ref. He is literally within 10 yards of the incident and has a completely unobstructed view and he calls nothing. Mctominay's head snaps back from the body check like he was punched by Mike Tyson. You can almost see the spit and sweat leaving his head because he is hit so hard. I don't care who is playing or what stage of the game its at, if that is not a penalty and a red card, I don't know what is.

    It was wild. Surprised he doesn't have a concussion from that, from both the impact and the landing. Totally wiped out.

    And the first one on him was a definite yellow, which that Billing lad got away with, but Mata and Sanchez both got booked for way less and for their first fouls.

    Exactly - half-time. Plenty more football to play in this one.
     
    You just need to look at Alexis' reaction when one our players make a poor decision to realise how poor we can be in our build up. Our decision making at times, especially in the box, can be awful.

    He has actually played some good passes and run after every ball. The problem seems to be that we are playing far too narrow. We are making the pitch way too small and playing into their hands with their compact defending

    Smalling's chances have all come off of free kicks, the team doing exactly what they should on a free kick situation. But here you are complaining about it saying it is a bad thing for him to get those chances

    We have played much better today then some of our other recent performances. There is some desire that has been missing in other games.

    Yeah, and there are four officials out there. What were they doing? Do they talk to each other? Will it be discussed by them at half time?
     
    I can see it quickly unraveling for Jose. We can't finish in the top 4 playing like this and the refs not giving us stonewall pens.
     
    The lack of quality from our FBs gets highlighted even more in a congested game like this.
     
    I don't understand what was in refs head? It is clear 100%. Not soft one, not suspicious, he had clear view. Ridiculous really. Can't wait VAR
     
    I don't think we've played too badly at all. Especially compared to how I thought we would be. Been a frustrating game though, not least the penalty call. Ridiculous decision.

    Also Cold Trafford as usual. Getting outsung on the Munich anniversary at OT vs Huddersfield is a new low even for the ridiculously low standards they set for themselves.
     
    This second half will probably make people go crazy if we don't end up scoring after about 10 minutes. The timewasting will be infuriating.

    Here's the logic

    Mourinho has to play a target man in his system
    Lukaku is a target man
    Rashford and Martial cannot play as target men
    Lukaku plays poorly consecutively but cannot be dropped due to the system itself being unchangeable
    Lukaku carries on as normal and Rashford/Martial continue to play in systems that diminish their greater footballing ability

    Change the system highlight the strengths of the best and most talented players.
    Martial would look a million bucks up front for City because he wouldn't need to be a target man.

    I was at the Burnley game on Boxing Day which was the first time I’d been for a few years. I was shocked by how quiet everyone was, the only fans I could hear were the Burnley goons.
