Alright, but why would he do that in a home game?

Home or away, formation doesn't matter. It's not a defensive system. Chelsea play 3 at the back all the time. It's how we approach the game.

I don't think we'll be defensive, but having three at the back matches Rostov.

I could be wrong, but Jose has never played 3 at the back until we've come up with teams that play the same. We've arguably had tougher games away from home and Jose has never gone with a back three.

I really think you're wrong, that those formations where due to very special circumstances not occurring Thursday, but we'll see.

Mourinho wasn't that afraid of Rostov away, he just wanted to have the quietest game possible there, using the pitch as an appropriate excuse, while at the same time testing the formation for Chelsea (which, by the way, in my opinion, was not even 3 at the back, much more something like a very defensive 4-4-2).

Even if he was afraid — I don't think he is — of Rostov featuring two forwards again and bombing balls to them, Carrick (but not Pogba) on the pitch should be more than enough to cover for that.

Please start Mata and Mikhi together.

I am tired of Mourinho being "pragmatic" and constantly using the likes of Fellaini, Young and Darmian. I have nothing against them, but it kills of any chance to play attacking football. Want to see him play to our strengths in this one.

I will go crazy if I see any of them against a relatively weak opponent like Rostov. Bring them on later to protect a lead if you must, but not from the beginning.

He literally only really uses those guys when he is rotating the squad. Apart from the beginning of the season, not one of those players has been anything close to a constant starter. Fellaini is the most active and he's usually reserved for a bench role, plan B when needed.

Bailly, Herrera, Zlatan, Mata, Shaw, Carrick and Mikhi should be fresh for this match, and hopefully Martial can make it as well. Hopefully a comfortable qualification with Middlesborough in mind.

Also, international breaks after isn't it. A lot of our players should get a break there as well.

    Should be made captain.

He doesn't speak English though, I'm sure that weighs against him.

As a very sweeping generalisation, Latin American footballers struggle to pick up non-Latin languages. Compare that to Spanish footballers (Mata, Herrera, Fabregas, Romeu etc) who learn near-fluent English within a couple of years. I think it might have something to do with many of them being from poor backgrounds with little education to begin with.

EDIT: I'm comparing to the Spanish because they speak the same language

    United's Europa League preparation compromised
Mourinho was angry enough with the FA for scheduling a Monday night game, but he then couldn’t get his players home until 4am.

The plane they were supposed to fly home in was not due to land at Heathrow until 2.30am, so a decision was taken to stay on the bus and drive home, which meant the players and staff didn’t get home until 4am on Tuesday.

Not ideal ahead of a crucial Europa League game...

Rostov set out to defend at home, so I imagine they'll be even more cagey this week.

I'm a big advocate of having Carrick in the team, and it certainly seems Pogba plays better when Michael is behind him. But I'm not sure 3 in midfield will be the way to go this week. Maybe just Carrick and Pogba in a two, so we have Carrick's passing ability and security, plus 4 players ahead of them.

    I'd say:

    Romero
    Valencia - Jones - Rojo - Blind
    Carrick - Pogba
Mata - Mhiki - Lingard / Martial (if fit)
    Zlatan

Rostov banned from playing on their home pitch
Turns out Mourinho had a point after all. Seven days after he asked for the ban, it comes into effect from the Russian Football Federation.

The Olimp-2 (Rostov) and Central (Rubin Kazan) stadiums have been banned from holding RPL matches by the RFU due to the state of the pitch.

So Rooney & Martial are out, Fellaini attended the presser, which could mean that he starts.

Extremely important game now. Should put out our strongest team and dominate them. Hope the likes of Fellaini and Darmian will be nowhere near it.

19 man #mufc squad training . No Shaw, Schweinsteiger, Rooney or Martial

Shaw, @BSchweinsteiger and @AnthonyMartial trained on adjacent pitch at same time.

Fellaini over Carrick wouldn't be a bad thing, I feel. I'd guess:

    DDG
    Valencia Bailly Smalling Rojo
    Fellaini Herrera Pogba
    Mata Zlatan Mkhi

I will be a bit upset with Jose if he tries Rojo at LB again :wenger:

I think Fellaini has started to show he is a decent squad player. Probably best United player in Russia last week, so I'm not sure why he's getting so much abuse.
We should be turning these boys over at OT so it makes sense to use the whole squad.

Of course he'll play Mata-Mkhitaryan-, unless the Armenian is not fit enough. They are both now in our first team. Mourinho has been pragmatic only when he feels United doesn't have a fair chance, even if playing well, of winning.

Drop Herrera when his ball recoveries up high can be essential and can't even play our next two games?

I optimistically had Shaw in my team…

    Don't think it's going to happen, it'll be Pogba(–Carrick)–Herrera, whether 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.
I will be a bit upset with Jose if he tries Rojo at LB again :wenger:
Even if he thinks his center-backs are in good form, that would be a disaster. Also, he needs Rojo as center-back. I think Blind is a sure one for this game.

Wow, I've found Mourinho's tone commenting about Martial's injury very disturbing. Must have asked him to make an effort to play Chelsea… and now he's ‘out of his mind’. Bet you he doesn't start against Middlesbrough, even if he's recovered.

I guess the main doubt about the lineup/formation for this game is about knowing if Mourinho wants to start with a Carrick/Fellaini 4-3-3 or a Lingard/Rashord 4-2-3-1. If Fellaini starts, means the manager suspects we can only break them from the air. And if he starts Rashford and things don't go well, there's no one to push the team.

Most of the comments re martial are concerning and disturbing

Herrera is one of my favourite players of the current crop, I just think we need Michael's passing to unlock what will undoubtedly be a very defensive side. And I doubt Pogba gets dropped, so opted for Ander.

    No messing around
    Romero

OK if the plane was not due to land till 2.30am , they would have taken at least an hour to prepare for the return flight and get passengers and bags on , 30min flight back to Manchester and then disembark, I think staying on the coach was the better idea.

I hope you are right. I am sure Mikhi will start but not so sure about Mata.

Luckhurst: #mufc have taken unusual step of checking in at The Lowry night before Europa League tie. They've been told to 'go to their rooms and rest'.
