We should trash them if we play our best team or comfortably win with the probable mix of best and fringe... although this season, fringe is more like youth.

I think we should take the Europa League seriously.

Still, the United B team should be more than capable of qualifying from this group, whilst playing in Dr Martens. So give, Greenwood, Gomes, Chong, Tuanzebe and Garner minutes until we get into the knock outs.

Play the kids! All of them! For every match!

Yes, the Europa League is a way back into the CL, but the effort and number of games required is just not worth it...especially with the thin squad Ole has to pick from.

Good! We need as many players back as we can now we are in a 3 game a week stage.

Hoping he gets chances at left back now.

    .

    So do I.
No competition should ever be taken lightly, and every game should be viewed as a must win, its the only way to create a 'winning mentality'

I'm really looking forward to the Astana match, I'm hoping to see some of the young guns get a proper run out.

Does Ole play the youth? He said he would, but I've not seen any evidence of this thus far.

If by youth you mean he is not playing 6 first year players every game, yes. Otherwise McTominay has started every game, so has Rashford and James has cemented himself on the right wing. Wan Bissaka is only 21 and he's been a fixture as well. Other than Ashley Young and prior to Pogba's injury, Pogba, De Gea and Maguire are the only players who could be called seniors in the starting X1. The playing squad has comfortably been the youngest in the league this season when his first choice players are healthy.

I find it funny how some say they are not interested in this game or our europa campaign but the moment we play bad for 20 mins this thursday they will come and criticise the team.

    romero

    dalot tuanzebe jones williams

    fred garner matic

    greenwood rashford Gomes

subs- rojo mata lingard pereira chong levitt grant james

    Romero
    Dalot Tuanzebe Rojo Young
    Matic Fred
    Pereira Lingard Chong
    Greenwood

Subs: Grant, Jones, Martial, Gomes, Garner, Maguire

Although I want Gomes to start, I think we will we him coming on in the 60th minute mark. Martial if fit will replace either Greenwood or Chong and hopefully we'll see Garner replace Matic. A chance to rest Maguire, Rashford, wan Bissaka and James and also give minutes to other squad members.

I don't think Ole will play all the academy players together this soon and I hope he doesn't too. Just giving them 90 minutes in a team full of inexperience would just backfire and may even dent their confidence big time. Considering how thin our squad is the likes of Garner, Gomes, Greenwood and Chong will get more chances but to play all of them together this soon could just backfire big time. For continuity purpose I hope he starts Chong and Greenwood and have Gomes come off the bench.

I think there is a strange tension about EL group games. We think of United as being above such matches, cannot get excited about them at all and want to see plenty of kids getting chances. On the other hand we naturally feel the club should be winning them all handsomely; regardless of injuries, rotation and the fact teams such as Astana will likely be going hammer and tongs for the EL while we're looking to be professional/conserve energy etc.

Whether it's EL or CL early on I always lower my expectations in terms of performance. Under Fergie we had some absolutely rotten group stage games so as long as the results are ok anything else, such as good individual or team displays, is a bonus.

I hope we take this tournament seriously. This whole attitude of we are bigger than this competition is nonsense. I hope we win all the matches and win the tournament and also finish in top 4. Chelsea have shown (twice) it is possible. But honestly I cannot see us winning this. Maybe reaching till RO 16 or something like that and then bowing out to a reasonably decent side.

I hope we win it too for sure, and though the teams who drop out of the CL could be tricky I don't see why we can't if we get momentum going.

I know we aren't really above EL group matches, we aspire to be by qualifying for the CL but if we don't we de facto find ourselves at our correct level. But for fans who have experienced the best and dearly want to in the future it is difficult to get excited about these group games. It may sound elitist and the sad behaviour of glory-hunters but I think it's the truth. Even UEFA have tacitly admitted the EL is a stopgap tournament by including a place in the CL for the winners, meaning the winners from last year cannot defend their title next time (to the glee of every winner since 2015).

I don't blame fans for struggling to get up for these matches, but I agree they should be mindful of the double-standards you mentioned.

Everyone actually thinks Garner, Gomes will get game time this game. Having watched what we have been doing I think he might go with the following:

    Romero
    Young Tuanzebe Jones Rojo
    McT Fred
    Perreira Gomes James
    Greenwood

Really hope Gomes starts! Surely this is the game you start him?! And then the league cup next week?

I think we'll play a side with a bit more experience than people are expecting. Then bring youngsters like Gomes as substitutes.

Agree 100%. People who call for 4-5 academy players to start are living in a dream land. Astana are not going to be pushovers - they are probably comparable to a decent Championship team, full of tough, experienced eastern European internationals. I expect the starting lineup to include 4-5 first team players, 4-5 fringe players and 1-2 academy players like Greenwood, Tuanzebe or Chong, who already had a few sub appearances under their belt. If the game is done and dusted with 20 minutes to go, we might see couple more kids get some minutes, hopefully Gomes and Garner.

As much as I want Gomes to start, it doesn't seem likely it would happen when he didn't play a minute at all v Leicester. I would hope he gets to come on for a good 30 minutes, perhaps another 30 this coming weekend v West Ham and then the entire 90 in the League Cup.

Asking players to play 2 games per week is a mistake. Tired players often lose the 3rd game when they play 3 in 8 days. It's tough against West Ham away.

Thursday against Astana. Asking Ashley & Rashy to play 2 games in 5 days. I beefed up my Thursday side because Astana look tougher than I first thought.
    1 - Sergio Romero
    2 - Brandon Williams
    3 - Ashley Young (captain)
    4 - Axel Tuanzebe
    5 - Phil Jones
    6 - James Garner
    7 - Marcus Rashford
    8 - Fred
    9 - Mason Greenwood
    10 - Angel Gomes
    11 - Tahith Chong

Sunday against West Ham. Considered playing Andreas mid-week but want someone as the FK specialist for Sunday.
    1 - David De Gea
    2 - Aaron Wan Bissaka
    3 - Diogo Dalot
    4 - Victor Lindelof
    5 - Harry Maguire
    6 - Scott McTominay (captain)
    7 - Jesse Lingard
    8 - Andreas Pereira
    9 - Anthony Martial
    10 - Paul Pogba
    11 - Daniel James

Not playing: Mata, Matic, Rojo because:
Mata: Cannot manage 90 minutes, so should only be subbed on. A player should never start unless they can finish.
Matic: Not going to play him away from home. Prefer to give Garner his chance on Thursday.
Rojo: Despite fullback injury crisis, he doesn't play the LB because he's not a LB.

it is freaking astana at Old Trafford. A team with half younger players like Greenwood, gomes, tuanz, chong, and garner with rest being our more veteran type players should be freaking plenty to get the result. Will be ticked if we dont see all of those players starting, not just hoping they get a little cameo.

All those hyping up Astana crack me up. Throw out this lineup to start and should be fine

    ---------Romero-----
    Dalot(if fit)-jones-tuanz-young
    ------garner--fred--
--------lingard(can run around in AM crap like usual)
    Chong-------------gomes-
    ----------greenwood-----

Can put some of the bigger names on bench in case we are still needing to get that win later on. Lingard, fred, jones, young, romero should be plenty of veteran leadership to get through this match. If dalot isnt fit enough yet then have to tweak backline a bit with sliding rojo in and young over (which would be just another "veteran leader" to deal with a side that isnt even leading the Kazakhstan league)

also, who knows where this is streaming in the US? Looked over at the usual places and cant seem to find it anywhere

I think this is the good game to give young players a run.

OT on an a (small) European night. They should be firing and take their chances.

The likes of Romero, Jones, Rojo, Matic, Fred and Mata will make sure that the younger ones are disciplned enough for this game.

So hope to see Gomes a bit, Chong for more than 10 mins, Greenwood, but especially Jesse Lingard.

Heard that this young player is amazing...

Gomes and Greenwood have to start. If he is not going to start them against a team that is league one standard at home then when will he.

Excited for this if we play the youth.
Probably wont happen but i hope to see Chong-Gomez-Greenwood behind Rashford.
Dalot and Fred should also get playing time

James could do with a rest and be ready for West Ham.
