    Romero
    Young--Tuanzebe--Jones--Rojo
    Fred--Matic
    Lingard--Gomes--Chong
    Greenwood

subs: Grant; Lindelof, Williams; McTominay, Garner; Mata, Rashford

Mata will probably start instead of Gomes.

Would be a light in the tunnel to see the Gomes, Chong or Greenwood adding some goals. We need it like never before in the current squad situation.

Will probably be a mix of senior and youth players. Might even see Matic again to build up his fitness, probably Fred, Lingard and Jones too. I hope the senior players treat it seriously and we see some good football.

    Romero
    Dalot Tuanzebe Jones Rojo
    Fred Matic
    Greenwood Mata James
    Rashford

    Subs: McTominnay, Gomes and Chong

Yeah, probably Young over AWB to save his injury I reckon but otherwise I'd love to see that team. Rashford up front again I reckon, try to build up his finishing confidence and keep Martial out until he's properly fit.
Agreed. Better not risk it with our best FB.

Don't know anything about FC Astana but I'll try and be optimistic. Expecting a mixture of youth and fringe players with the odd first teamer:

    ---------------------Romero----------------------
    Young---------Jones-------Tuanzebe-------Rojo
    ---------------Fred---------Matic-----------------
    ----------------------Mata------------------------
    Greenwood----------Rashford------------Chong

SUBS - Lingard (Chong), Garner (Matic), Pereira (Rashford)

    Man United 2 - 0 FC Astana
    Rashford, Mata.

    Romero
    Young Tuanzebe Jones Williams
    McTominay Fred
    Greenwood Gomes James
    Rashford
Garner and Chong to come on in the 2nd half.

    Prediction: 5-0.

Might see Chong and Greenwood but I bet we don't see either of Garner or Gomes.

    Romero
    Young Tuanzebe Jones Rojo
    Fred
    Pereira Gomes
    Lingard Greenwood Chong

This is going to bugger our preparation for West Ham away on Sunday, which is a bloody tough game for us at the best of times. Play the kids.

Personally I hope we just play all the kids, really couldn't care less about this competition.

Expect a good mix of squad players and youngsters for this. Would expect the likes of Romero, Jones, Tuanzebe, Fred etc to get their first start of the season. Greenwood will surely start, and it would be a great game to see him get his first senior goal (or hopefully goals). Hope to see at least Gomes and Chong too. Maybe even Garner.

Probably field the second side considering our injured ones and the fact we are at home vs a weak side in a weak competition.

    Romero

    Young
    Tuanzebe
    Jones
    Rojo

    Matic
    Fred

    Chong
    Mata
    Lingard

    Greenwood

    I'd go

    Romero
    Dalot
    Tuanzebe
    Lindelof
    Young

    McTominay
    Perrira
    Fred

    James
    Martial/Rashford
    Lingard

    Subs

Grant, Jones, Wan-Bissaka, Garner, Chong, Greenwood, Mata

Please please please, I want starts for Tuanzebe, Gomes and Greenwood. That's all.

Would be very perturbed to only see greenwood and tuanz as youngsters starting. Gomes HAS to start, think garner and chong need to start as well. Want to see at least those 4 and then can sprinkle in some veteran players who need fitness.

    I'd go

    Romero
    Dalot
    Tuanzebe
    Lindelof
    Young

    McTominay
    Perrira
    Fred

    James
    Martial/Rashford
    Lingard

    Subs

Grant, Jones, Wan-Bissaka, Garner, Chong, Greenwood, Mata
no gomes at all? Only tuanz as a youngster getting experience. Hard Pass

Keep 1st team squad for Sunday away to West Ham. But have enough on bench to bring on should plan A fail.

    ------------- Romero
    Williams --- Jones --- Tuanzebe --- Mitchell
    ------------- Garner --- Levitt ------------
    ------ Ramazani --- Gomes --- Chong ------
    ------------- Greenwood -------------

Bench: Kovar, WanBissaka, Rojo, McTominay, Fred, Rashford, James

As I am a Kazakh, I feel obliged to give a cultural perspective on Astana. If you are interested only in football assessment, just skip the post.

I don't follow Kazakh football closely: it's a waste of time. With average salary of $250 a month, Kazakhs have more worries than football. Professional football in Kazakhstan exists only because the Governors finance the regional clubs and the Republic pays for NT. Kazakh Premier League is a regions vanity fair. Since the oil prices plummeted, the financing of the clubs was drastically reduced and the level of the League dropped.

Astana is by far the biggest club in Kazakhstan. Its yearly budget is around $45 million US dollar. FC Astana is a part of Astana Sports Holding financed by Samruk-Kazyna, a National Wealth Fund. The most successful member of Astana Sports group is Astana Cycling which a major team in the world Cycling.

Astana was established in 2008 as Lokomotiv under patronage of then the President's youngest daughter's husband Daniyar Hasenov who was the club president and player (!!!). This little detail gives an insight of why Sasha Baron Cohen chose to name his fantasy country "Kazakhstan". Kazakhstan, being a large and open country, is relatively known in the world (unlike, say, Turkmenistan), and has a quite extravagant elite.

Kazakhstan society, especially in big cities like Almaty and the capital Astana (renamed to Nur-Sultan after an ageing and mentally sick dictator but Kazakhs don't accept "Nur-Sultan" in daily life) are a modern society. Foreigners love Almaty located in the South at the Alatau mountains foothills. A beautiful city with all local pleasures and international infrastructure with Starbuckses, Ritzes, and Saks Fifth Avenues of the developed world.

However, our elite grouped around Nazarbayev family, looks like they came right from the Middle Ages. The political situation is changing, and the regime is counting months to its inevitable fall.

Since Lokomotiv became Astana in 2011, the club has won 5 League titles, went to Europe cup 1/16 play offs, and participated in CL Group stages. It's a pretty strong side with a lot of experienced foreign players and the best national talents. Kazakh players are of a respectable quality. Kazakh NT has become quite an opponent for European teams lately. We destroyed Scotland 3:0 in ongoing Euro qualifiers. The last match was against Russia in Kaliningrad, where Russia escaped a draw with a late goal. Kazakhstan is third in the Group behind Belgium and Russia and ahead of Scotland and Cyprus.

Astana is a good test for our youngsters. I personally would play a second team against them. However, the win will not be guaranteed. Astana is an experienced, disciplined, well organized and tactically sound mid-level European team.
Thanks for that interesting insight into
    Astana

    Romero
    Rojo - Tuanzebe - Jones - Williams
    Garner - Matic
    Lingard - Gomes - Chong
    Greenwood

Bench: Mata, Fred, McTominay, James, Rashford, Maguire

I can see Ole starting Matic and subbing in Fred for EL games, then starting Fred and subbing Matic for PL games, when needed. The rest are backstops for anyone that can't go 90. Would be fun to see Rashy and James going in for the last 15 for mop-up duty against a tired defense. Cruel, but fun.

Can't wait for Dalot to be available again...

    Thanks for the breakdown.

Those would be the 3 I'd expect to see start. No excuses for him if he can't manage to field a few of our young talents here

I think the EL will be a boon for our fringe players and youth team players looking to make a breakthrough. The only player, who can be a starter, who should play is Fred. The likes of Jones, Tuanzebe, Gomes and Greenwood should feature prominently at least until our progression to the next round is under threat. This, in turn, ought to prepare squad players for roles in the first team should they be needed.

Rojo at RB? The duo with JLingz on that side

When it's a route to CL it's going to be important for us.

    Unfortunately.
