This goal will do wonders for Martial's confidence no doubt. He's had a rough few seasons but great goal from him, how many would have skied that shot of his. He was the cream of the crop when we got him from Monaco, and he kept Mbappe out of that team for God's sake. There's a reason all teams always put a 2 vs 1 on him to keep him quite when he plays.

That goal you could argue was a result of us not being so lop sided for a change with a genuine threat from the right Martial had room to work with.
That's a good point actually, seems like we've added some structure to our game and play some interesting stuff on both wings. May I suggest that is because Pogba isn't playing?

Yeah, fair point. More a case of them getting way too many dangerous crosses in for my liking but having the peace of mind that David is back in god mode
David’s presence is enough to be MOTM?

Great goal from Martial. Composed finish. Imagine how potent we’d be with a solid midfield holding type of player.

While some on here claim that Fred is the most defensively sound midfield option we have, he always emerges second best in midfield duels and rarely wins second balls. I do see occasional glimpses of brightness in his ball distribution but these moments are few and far between

Sorry anyone after that half that still wants to focus on Fred negatives has a fecking agenda. It's ridiculous

McFred aren’t out there to win midfield battles but Ole plays them when he wants to neutralize the opponent.

McTominay has been important in the first half. I don`t think Fred has been too good, because he has lost the ball 2 or 3 times in dangerous positions.

It's funny, I'm not seeing a stellar performance today, though there are some very good things - like seeing AWB and Greenwood linking up and Martial getting on the scoresheet. Likewise, I didn't think we were terrible against Villareal though Dalot was a disaster and Pogba left McTominay alone in midfield. Outside of that, I thought we were relatively good against a very very well organised team that's proved to be very difficult to play against.

Thought Everton had shown more fight and aggression for a long spell and then we got our goal which hopefully demoralises them and spurs us on.

McTominay really has done nothing that good. He's been decent and he's done his usual hiding job.

People just look for things to confirm their world view.

Yep I don’t think pogba is over on the left at that time. But I might be wrong to be fair.

Come on let's get another goal

    Forgotten by next week probs
Yeah this is the thing, we label players/managers and it tends to stick.

He hasn’t been terrible going forwards for a good while now yet that’s the main thing people label him with.

He can still improve a lot of course and I think he will.

Much improved so far, but still some shaky moments. Would be typical to let Everton back into this, but hopeful with the options on the bench it's enough to grind out the win.

I think keeping a clean sheet is more important long term United as opposed to getting a second goal. If we can keep a clean sheet, its a good base for going forward

It is not a WUM to express a genuinely felt opinion especially when coming from an impartial observer like me.
Yes it is and you know it.

noone watches that performance from the ref (especially the post McTominay/Digne tussle) and thinks “ref did well there. Despite Digne diving, raised hands, aggressive behaviour, he ignored it, let it happen and didn’t get a card out”.

Go away and keep celebrating beating Spurs.

I sense there's a general idea match after match that the crowd seem to follow here. "Midfield is getting bypassed easily" and everybody runs with it like a zombie.

Delighted for Martial, he needed that!

Thought we were decent at times, but we look a bit dodgy on the break

Personally think we've been pretty decent today, certainly better than most of our performances this season. I also think Everton are actually playing very well in their own right. I expect more goals in 2nd half.

My one concern is that we need to get him closer to goal. He's potentially really scary individually at the moment. He can create space and hold the ball in tight spaces. Imagine all that in addition to him using his shooting higher up the pitch.

Eventually yes, also when our team is more balanced and the link between midfield and attack is fluid enough. At the moment, he is that link. And we need him there, the most natural baller we've got.

Genuinely can’t believe there are ‘fans’ who can’t celebrate us being a goal up because they dislike Martial so much

Feck I hate our fans so much.
People just want to be ‘right’ rather than wanting success of the club.

They want the club to be successful no doubt, but they want it under their terms. Personally don’t understand the mentality. Hopefully this puts some confidence into Martial, he kicks on and he proves people wrong (me included).

The real danger here is set plays. We are down a Maguire who is elite at getting the ball away. Amazed that everton had zero joy with that in the first half

Everton were running through us with ease and this is without their 2 best players. How is this good defensively?

"Running through us with ease"? People were writing that about the Newcastle game too, and it's absurd. Both of those teams are counterattack teams, with players with the speed and skill to create a threat on the transition and surrounded by a tactical set up designed to exploit that. That's going to happen a handful of times against anyone, unless you set up tactically to be able to mark out both their central midfielders and their forwards as soon as you lose the ball. Which we don't, and shouldn't.

What absolute bullshit. You have indeed looked for things to confirm your world view.....
