You're not wrong there but there's a flip side to that. You know why Carrick is hailed as a tactician and positionally disciplined? He is talented but incredibly one-dimensional, who knows his limits and plays to them to the point of being a non-factor in games like these i.e where the game is brought to you (the player) aka games where Carrick can't dictate play at a slow(er) tempo with minimal pressure.
You get movement, mobility, pressing and attacking runs/passes (maybe less quality but definitely more quantity) from a Herrera/Schneiderlin combo but less shape and tempo. I think I'd take my chances and let the younger duo do their thing than rely on Carrick.Phewwww. Frustrating game though.
