Unless the ref has given permission to the player being off the pitch i.e treatment for injury, then the player is deemed to be 'in play' and level with the goal line regardless if he's just slid off the pitch or flown into Stand G.

People actually think sliding off the pitch suddenly takes you out the game?! Of course it's onside.

Not a great half - should be scoring a few of those chances.

I think you have to be within the pitch but no certain so containing my outrage until someone on here clarifies
I remember a similar goal United were given a few years ago where someone (forgot who) was onside to pop it in even though an opposition player was off the pitch (behind the goal) injured.

Perhaps someone could tell me which game I’m on about?

Meh, a heated team talk from Jose will hopefully shake things up.

Why heated? I think Jose would be happy overall, just poor finishing has let us down. The goal came out of nowhere really. If I was Jose I'd want us to carry on as we have been.

An injured player who rolls off the pitch near his goal doesn't play everyone onside.

Our fault anyway, we should have scored, not good enough in attack.

It's amazing that non of the pundits (ex players) know if he was onside or not!

Correct unfortunately. They changed the rule to stop players intentionally leaving the field of play to make the attacking player offside.

Nope. If a player is off the field of play, he doesn't count.
Like Linekar just said though, does it matter if the players deliberately gone off the pitch (to receive treatment/is injured) or if they accidentally slid off, like Blind just now?

Will that Goal be blamed on shaw as their fullback made that run twice already and shaw was caught on it all the time?

I'd need to see it again, from a different angle, I think Blind was off the field in which case:

"A defending player who leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission shall be considered to be on the goal line or touchline for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage in play or until the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line and it is outside their penalty area. If the player left the field of play deliberately, the player must be cautioned when the ball is next out of play."

Wow did not know that. Very interesting.

Lukaku pretty poor once again, fluffed a sitter after Shaw’s shot from the side. What is it now? 1 goal in 12,5 matches? Simply not good enough for Man Utd.... so hopefully now I have jinxed the hell out of this situation.

That goal was onside. Shaw completely lost his man on the wing.

    Blind is playing him on.

Pretty bad goal to conceded considering our dominance.

Pundits and former players and managers not knowing the rules is nothing new.

If you guys think that just because Blind slid off the pitch during their attack, that means the goal was offside then teams could just position a player there at all times and only have him run on when someone goes through... it's ridiculous.

As has been cleared up by several people by now, the goal is legitimate.

No it's not. Blind is an active player, and 'willingly' goes off the pitch. What would be ridiculous is if a player could just walk off the pitch and place an opponent in offside.

If you willingly go off the pitch to gain an advantage you get booked

If you accidentally leave the field of play you’re not active.

Our fault anyway, we should have scored, not good enough in attack.

I would imagine that's because an injured player doesn't count as active in the referee's mind so he has permission to be there. Whereas Blind was still an active player in the referee's mind.

That's why the injured player would need permission to come back on but Blind didn't.

Atleast we have singlehandedly made a dull group somewhat interesting by losing to Basel and trailing to CSKA.

It is a goal nothing to complain about. Hopefully we can step up in the second half.

I would take off and rest Valencia though and Lukaku as well.

Think the other way round guys - should a defender be allowed to run (or slide, in this case) off the pitch to create an offside situation? Certainly not.

FIFA website says if a player deliberately steps off the pitch to make someone offside it doesn't work and the defender would be cautioned.

Blind clearly didn't go off deliberately.

Wasnt the rule changed to stop attacking players from going off the pitch, standing behind the goal line during a throw in and once the ball was thrown they would run back onto the pitch to not be offside?

Thought it was Shaws fault at first but wtf is Smalling doing there? Terrible defending.

I don't think that is in the spirit of the game. It's to stop players deliberately doing it. Blind hasn't deliberately left the pitch. At best it's a grey area and if a player sliding off the pitch is considered deliberate they need to rewrite the rules.

Funny that even the pundits don't know the rules. I had to look it up to be fair, but without the refs permission you cant step off the field. Blind was therefor, still in play and his keeping him onside.

Guess refs are not that cluesless.

Lukaku needs to score badly. His confidence in front of the goal looks shot.

    Also great performance by Shaw.

I just hope for a draw to continue our unbeaten strike, otherwise don't care much.
