Chelsea are top half now so we won't get any points, maybe could have won if the didn't get 3 points against Brighton.

Ah right on cue, Chelsea is now going to be a difficult opponent to beat. We need to play Varane. Enough of the he is not left-footed enough nonsense. Can we also play more midfielders than attackers? The lack of control in the middle is doing my head in. If we want to play transition football, our attackers need to have enough chances to score. If we can't yet, just pack the midfield and counter.

    Onana

    AWB
    Maguire
    Shaw
    Reguilon

    Mainoo
    Amrabat
    Bruno

    Antony
    Hojlund
    Garnacho

Chelsea won't be anywhere near Top 4 this year, need to be putting them away at home.
2-1 with a good performance from Onana.

    Onana
    AWB - Maguire - Lindelof - Shaw
    Amrabat - Mainoo
    Bruno
    Antony - Hojlund - Garnacho

Rashford shouldn't even be in the squad imo.

They play well against the big teams. They have drawn against city, arsenal, Liverpool and beat Spurs. They will raise their level against us and as usual we will be found wanting.

Dreading this game. If we again play with a one man midfield this could get really ugly, really fast.

This and Bournemouth game are so important as trip to Anfield is a guaranteed loss and it’s very unlikely we’ll best West Ham away.

No idea which version of Chelsea will turn up but if we pick Bruno and Mctominay in midfield (which we almost certainly will) any decent team will give us huge problems because we just surrender the midfield.

Must be a first that we're almost 2/1 at home against a team in 10th at this stage of the season.

This could be the game for the long awaited return of both Nkunku and Lavia.

This version of Varane shouldn't play for us again - he's honestly been so poor this season.

Agree on the CMs but ETH won't do this. We should be starting Amrabat/Mainoo as a pair - they can dovetail coming deep/staying high as we try and play out and the idea versus Newcastle to beat their press with a short period of drawing them on before a quick direct ball (which, when it worked, was great but it seldom did) will work better if on the many times the long ball doesn't work, there's two DMs in there to mop up/slow down any counters.

ETH has to accept the limitations we have - go back to the dreaded double pivot - play Reguillon and AWB and have them play a lot more crosses into the box for Hojlund. Then we have Bruno/Garnacho and Antony as the other attackers who will at the very least put a shift in/track runners and make us hopefully difficult to just run staright through.

So we are seeing games where we score goals and Onana drops a clamber or Onana has a good game and our strikers forget their shooting boots. High time both departments click together

So are we saying Varane is finished? Is he the worst defender this year? Serious question, I didnt see him as a major problem but maybe missed it.

Worst defender compared to who? I think Maguire has comfortably been better than him at RCB which is his preferred spot. LCB, Shaw starts above him given we are desperate for pace, although he should start above Lindelof in my opinion. Licha and Evans are injured.

I don't think players are 'finished' so quickly, it's more United seem to have a habit of catching them on the way down from a previously lofty peak. Varane has the added problem of fitness issues and so you have an out of form, unfit player whose physical abilities are now naturally waning - the only way to get them back to being good is to play them and that seems too high risk to me.

This is our only option at the moment, crazy how bad that side is on paper considering the amount we've spent since Jose left.

This, we do it all the time, how many other teams in the EPL buy burnt out players from the continent?

Didn’t that happen against Everton? We now have to wait 3 months.

If Martial or Rashford start, I'll be EtH out, no matter what I've said to this point. Anything less than Garnacho - Hojlund - Antony up front will be the end for me. I could see Pellistri in there, too.

Enzo will thrive in this game. I don't really see us winning the midfield battle, so what ? Play fast counter attacking football and that's it. Park the bus and voila.

    -----------------------------------------------Onana-------------------------------------------------
    Wan Bissaka-------------Maguire------------Varane----------------------------Shaw
    ---------------------------------Amrabat------------Mainoo-----------------------------------
    Antony------------------------------------Bruno-----------------------------------Garnacho
    -----------------------------------------------Hojlund------------------------------------------------

Would be great if Eriksen and Mount can be back soon( before Pool).

This should be noted and your account deleted if either of them get selected.

First time in a solid 6 months I’m desperate for Antony to start.

I’m firmly in the camp who thinks he’s a fraud if he starts either of Martial or Rashford after that shitshow.

I know in reality wholesale short term changes are probably more damaging, but with the exception of Luke Shaw, AWB, Mainoo, Bruno and Garnacho I’d happily see any of them dropped from the squad in full.

    I’d like to see

    another keeper
    AWB - Varane - Lindelof - Shaw
    Mainoo - Amrabat
    Antony - Bruno - Garnacho
    Hojlund

I don’t expect to see a win in any circumstances, but I’d like to see some integrity towards the so called rules and principles.

Harsh on Maguire but if Varane is to stay beyond January, he has to play imo and there’s no time like the present to mix things up. Irrespective of how well Maguire is supposedly doing, we are conceding a crazy amount of shots towards our goal.

    Onana
    AWB Maguire Shaw Reguilon
    Mainoo Hannibal
    Bruno
    Pellistri/Antony Hojlund Garnacho

Not sure about AWB, still liable to have a brain fart every now and then. Few young players but I’d rather watch a younger side try… and lose, than a team of older/expensive players feck about.. and lose.

    l’ll be there regardless though.

I'm not sure Hannibal is calm enough to start a game like this though. He will be a red card waiting happen. I would have Amrabat ahead of him and since Amrabat gets always subbed at around 60', then Hannibal can come on as a sub.

This is close to a must win for Ten Hag. Our very poor record against bigger teams is a huge blemish and chelsea are hot and cold this season, and we're at home.

Funnily, looking at other fixtures, should we win here and win against bournemouth, I think we'll be in better shape nearing half way than seems possible- and would put us in good shape on the assumption we improve as our players return.

Also looking ahead at fixtures, there are some tough away ones coming up. For many reasons, this is a must win I feel.

    Onana

    AWB
    Maguire
    Shaw
    Reguilon

    Mainoo
    Amrabat
    Fernandes

    Antony
    Hojlund
    Garnacho

I felt we were picking up some form before the Newcastle game and we'd give them a real go...
    How wrong was I...

Last ten home league games against Chelsea has been 4 wins and 6 draws. It's the most drawn fixture in Premier league history (26 games) and 19 of these games has been score draws ( a joint high with Arsenal v Tottenham)

United due a draw in the Premier league this season and this could be it.

I don’t think he’s that bad personally (though not much in it re him or Amrabat)… it’s more about the second part of post (youth).

It’s easier (for me) to lose with youth if you think there’s progress being made… either they get better OR you find out a lot about them.

Watching someone amble about in their sixth, seventh, tenth season here is annoying. Really, really, really xxxxxxx annoying.

Think we’ll score at least 2 past these. Question is how many will we concede? Onana will probably have another stinker. I want Varane back in the line up alongside the inform Maguire. Put Shaw back at LB. Hojlund, Antony and Garnacho front 3. Won’t be though Rashford will start as always.
