We aren’t playing Melbourne here lads, did anybody really expect this to be a walk in the park?

We’ve not been brilliant but neither have they. The good news is we can play a lot better.
This is why you should never take too much notice of pre-season. A good one does not mean a good season and a bad one does not equate to a bad season.

Happy with how we are playing. Its just very evident we lack the quality personnel in some areas to really become a good team. Can see that being the case all season

I thought we attacked well but decision making is letting us down again. It may be that confidence and players getting their first goal of the season allows ego to come out of it.

Defensively a bit too open but the first few weeks of the seaosn can sometimes be like that before it settles down. It will take a bit of time for the back four to gel and the midfield to form a solid unit.

Personally, I'm embracing open football as it works for our forwards.

Fortunate to be ahead. Chelsea been much the better in general play but the combined stupidity of Zouma defensively and Mount/Barkley and surprisingly Jorginho going forward has kept Utd afloat. Maguire has been ok, Lindelof needs to be less passive in defensive situations in his own box, still a lack of coherence to the football.

Don't expect too much from the first game of the season to be fair.

I feel sorry for Pogba every time he gets the ball Chelsea just surround him if only we'd signed a couple of midfielders instead we're stuck with limited McTominay and useless Pereira.

Fortunate we are one goal up.
    Entertaining game no doubt.
But if this game provides insight into the future, we have a few major things to worry about. First of all, I think we will have problems relying on Rashford and Martial in attack. There will certainly be brilliant and breathtaking moments from them but over the course of a season, we will regret not reenforcing that attack.
Secondly, the midfield is just not strong enough. Depending on Pogba has never worked for us and in the light of this first half, that might not change.

But long way to go. I wouldn't write off this team yet.

Yes they are. In terms of general play they are far better team who creates chances and dominating. At OT, as away team

Chelsea have created 3 clearcut goalscoring opportunities and also hit the post with a long, free shot. I agree they've been the better side.

Because being a miserable football fan is utterly pointless. It defeats the entire reason of being a supporter...

There's a reason the match going fans think our internet fanbase are bellends. Massive bellends.

There's being negative and there's being objective.

Mourinho digging out Luke Shaw already.

We're lucky we're not 1.3 down. That's how it felt to me. Wonder when this "pressing" style of Ole's will be visible to the naked eye.....

Both teams are kind of clunky making weird mistakes. United looks solid in defense (for the first time in ages) but are losing momentum whenever they're venturing into the final third - and for Chelsea it's the opposite they look cohesive on attack but their defense seems unfocused. Weird game - could go either way. For our part there's one thing that really annoys me - four times during the first half we've either lost momentum or possession because players are wasting their efforts by instantly turning to the ref attempting to whine their way to a free kick. They need to stop losing their concentration attempting to influence the referee and stay on their game chasing the ball constantly instead. Either the ref blows his whistle or he don't - the time and effort spent appealing is best used elsewhere.

This Chelsea side is probably one of the worst in the last 2 decades though.
They're Chelsea nonetheless, they're known for their ability to raise their game against us. There's a reason for us having a negative record against them in EPL.

Sly dig from Jose on Shaw, saying Maguire will have to learn that he has to cover for Shaw quite a lot this season.

Same old shite. Lack of urgency. Every attack going down the left because we dont have a right. Lingard, Shaw, Andreas and Pogba dreadful.

Jose being a prick there. Luke shaw had to come inside to match the wingers run. Rashford didnt track his full back

Midfield has been very very bad. No control and we are getting overrun. Maguire has been amazing and my best player so far. AWB has also made a great start as has Shaw and Lindeloff. Martial is trying too hard as is Rashford. I do not know what Lingard has done apart from a few curvy runs. I forgot Andreas was playing, had to remind myself of the line ups.

Ah c'mon, you can't expect him to just throw them into the team in the first game of the season against Chelsea. That's just madness. They're very young and need to be given time.
Why is it madness? Lads would be buzzing. Madness is to play same shite and expect different results.

Fortunate to be ahead. Chelsea been much the better in general play but the combined stupidity of Zouma defensively and Mount/Barkley and surprisingly Jorginho going forward has kept Utd afloat. Don't expect too much from the first game of the season to be fair.

Chelsea look to have got up to speed quickly enough under Lampard.

We seem to be in permanent transition.

With no midfield is it really a surprise we are struggling to keep hold off the ball.

    Positives
    1. Speed on counter
    2. AWB and Slabby

    Negatives
    1. No midfield
    2. Perreira is a nothing player and needs more purpose in the squad
    3. Pogba and Rashford have been poor
    4. Team looks clueless near the box

We're lucky we're not 1.3 down. That's how it felt to me. Wonder when this "pressing" style of Ole's will be visible to the naked eye.....

Wait you can't see that we're pressing more than last year?

I'm delighted we're winning and enjoying the game, doesn't mean you should just go "all is great woohoo" and not offer thoughts on where we've been lacking. What would be the point in a forum otherwise?

There's criticism, and then there's this apocalyptic bollocks.

I keep pointing out that we are the youngest side in the league, and we are showing it. A mix of good and bad. Which is what we all have to expect as they grow through the season.

I just think a break from the negativity is badly needed. It's the start of the season, we have the biggest and toughest game to kick it all off. We are winning, we've seen our two signings show some very good things already.

I mean, when Souness is more positive about us that some of our own fans, it should tell us all something.

Those crying for Gomes, I don't think he is ready to be thrown in the deep end just yet, but I am hoping Ole will be playing him regularly. Not that Lingard has done anything noteworthy to deserve being in the Starting XI

Mourinho just said that Maguire will have to cover for Shaw alot of times. I think Luke really killed his cat.

Get Lingard and Pereira off, they have been total liabilities, not all that in terms of pressing and probably lost all their duels with the Chelsea players.

How Gomes is not on the bench is beyond me, he would have given us a different dimension to our play and help keep possession. :wenger:

Good thing that AWB is an absolute monster of a player, he could be the best transfer of the season overall in the league.

The way how some people saw that first half, they must be bunch of troll, no way they are for real.

    Running, running running.....then more running!

There have been some lovely little passing moves in transition though. Some of that just needs one more pass to come off. When Pogba was breaking a tried a trick we were one more pass from being in. Shaw on the overlap fluffed his cross. There are some good signs of encouraging play there.

They're Chelsea nonetheless, they're known for their ability to raise their game against us. There's a reason for us having a negative record against them in EPL.

Yes they had very good coaches and players. They are lacking both at the moment.
