I don't doubt getting studs down the back of the ankle is painful but it's not 180 degree turn instantly curl up in fetal position painful. Drop to a knee with his hand up and he'd still likely have been able to cover the shot.

You're getting specific because you don't have an example. He doesn't know he got hit by his own player. It's a corner and the contact is in his leg. Atkinson clearly goes to put his whistle to his mouth when he sees DDG down, but it's too late. It's bad refereeing.
