Rooney isn't anywhere near as good as Van Persie as a lone striker. He's too short and is bullied by centre backs. The performance Van Persie had against Real Madrid was something that Rooney couldn't replicate.

I agree you need to defend against the ball but you also need to be smart. We've got players going in to areas or staying in areas where others are able to defend where the ball currently is and so should be looking to where the danger is.

But as you say it's disappointing that these same problems are still here even with new players. Hard to explain. Both defensively and in build up play it's re-occurring problems which is a disappointment.

I normally prefer Van Persie over Rooney but today he's been virtually ineffective.
